  1. Wasn't the boy the Joshua that inspired Joshua's Law? The girl was Ashleigh Best and it was off Scott Road near Daniell Middle School--they were students at Sprayberry. The girls had been toilet papering a freshman cheerleader's house and the dad caught them in the act and they were trying to flee so they wouldn't get caught. Asheligh had 6 girls in her Chevy Cavalier and they ran off the road and hit a tree. Three girls, Jadie, Leslie, and Rachel, were killed, one girl was in a coma, and one was able to crawl out of the car and walk to a nearby house to get help. The dad that was chasing
  2. I don't like all the breaks because it takes my oldest a good 2 weeks to get back into the groove, only to be off again. It seems like all the regulations to improve schools only makes it worse. I got a public Cobb county education, started the end of August and out the first week in June, got three days off for Thanksgiving, two weeks for Christmas, and Spring break, with the occasional teacher workday sprinkled in. I think I learned more than what my oldest is learning at the same grade level. I don't know, maybe it's just me.
  3. Yeah, we're getting a LOT of questions and concerns about next year and pricing and deductible. We have no idea what YOUR insurance will apply to YOUR deductible until we try to file it. Also, we have a lot of state employees (teachers, principals, school system in general) and they're all being forced to the BCBS plan with a minimum $1000 deductible and we don't know if their weekly allergy shot will be applied to deductible or if they'll have a small copay for it or what. I was bringing a pediatric patient back, not even 10 years old, and the child stood up and came back to the door,

    My Daddy

So sorry. Your family's in my prayers.
  5. When I got married over three years ago I filled out a change of address form for just myself. My dad gets junk mail at our house now, it's his name but our mailing address. I'm not sure how they made that connection (I had a different last name to begin with) and it's never any important mail, but the junk comes to us. He's gone by there and explained that he never moved and his name was never on the form but they still haven't fixed it.
  6. Hubby has known from day one that if Garth were to ever come back to Atlanta that I'd better get tickets. It's on my bucket list and I will probably be blubbering like an idiot WHEN (not if, but when) I get tickets and at the show, and it's all over when I hear "The Dance" in person. I'll be a mess--but a thoroughly happy mess!!
  7. Have you SEEN the cable bill lately? You need more than $15 million. She probably means they'll have to cancel it after their introductory pricing is up! LOL To the original post, yes, that bugs me. Dad fell off a ladder, and the concern is over the life insurance and not asking if dad's okay.
  8. My oldest has been repeatedly hit by rubber bands on the bus, all shot by the same kid, and was hit in the eye on Friday. He told the bus driver who told him to sit down and people have the choice to do what they want and if he's got a problem then go to the principal. It's not an accidental rubber banding, it's where the kid is making the gun with his fingers and loading the rubber band and "shooting" it at him. I thought that was a terrorist act nowadays?
  9. As someone who's been in the Children's Healthcare parade in Atlanta, I can tell you it is an honor to be invited to participate. We were in it my freshman year, which was a good thing because we were practicing for the Tournament of Roses parade that same year. Yes, it's better to be on the locally-televised big city parade than the tiny local parade. Nothing against the tiny local parade, but it's more prestigious to be in the big one.
  10. Since it's spelled caramel, I pronounce it car-a-mel. Besides, Carmel is a city in California. Hubby says Carmel and it drives me up the wall. Oh, and it's pe-kahns, not pee-cans (that's when you relieve yourself in an empty Pringles container on a long road trip); and poinsetta.
  11. I started using CVS on Due West Road years ago and loved it--they knew my name, the main pharmacist knew me on sight and had my script already out when I walked in the door, and once my husband called to ask if "my wife's medicine is ready" and the pharmacist recognized his voice and asked how I was doing without my husband having to identify himself or me. I switched to a CVS in Marietta and they were getting to know my on sight and then moved out here, and the trend has stopped. The CVS in Dallas is sooooo busy and there's not the same level of personalized service that I had grown accusto
  12. You'll need a driver's license and certified copy of the birth certificate, SS card or tax forms showing your SSN, and TWO proofs of residence (different utility bills, bank statement, health EOB; all dated within the prior 60 days), and if your last name does NOT match the last name on the birth certificate, you need documentation showing why. I had my marriage license for my first attempt (showing last name change from maiden to 1st married), divorce decree, and second marriage license (showing last name change from 1st married to 2nd married name). Fortunately I had all my documents and g
  13. That being said, I wear hose whenever I'm wearing dress shoes, regardless whether they're open-toed or not but I do tuck the seam underneath. I only have one or two pair of open-toed shoes and rarely dress up to wear them. My feet are dry and I have ugly toenails so I paint the nails and wear the hose and hope nobody looks down. I have lots of boots. Boots are good. Boots are my friend. Socks can be worn with boots. And in my defense, it's hard finding dress shoes that don't have heels over 3" or are close-toed.
  14. I wish it would be banned. I had an asthma patient, a kid, come in with uncontrolled asthma despite medication compliance. With one whiff as the child and mom came into the exam room, I asked if there were any smokers in the house. Mom said she and dad both smoke, but only on the porch right outside the front door. I reminded her that the smoke is clinging to their clothes and when she opens the front door, it's drifting back inside the house. Mom then looks at the child and yells at her to stay away from her when she's smoking (the child would go sit on the porch steps between mom and da
  15. My first job as a NURSE only paid $14/hour and that was in 2008, so I don't think you should be making more than that asking if I'd like fries with my order. Anyway, if the $15/hour thing is passed, then employers will cut hours so the kids aren't actually bringing home any more money. Instead of making $7.50/hour working 20 hours a week, they'd pay $15/hour for 10 hours per week and wouldn't hire new workers so the shifts would all be short-staffed. Just a thought.
  16. Um, no. Plenty of people with health insurance go to the ER. I hurt my knee and went to the ER, insurance card in hand, because I didn't know if it was more serious and would require surgery or MRI over a standard x-ray that you get at an urgent care office. Also, Wellstar hospitals don't even ask for your insurance until after you've been triaged, placed in a room, and the doc has at least checked on you. The staff can't prioritize the insured patients over the self-pay or Medicaid patients and people are seen in order. And yes, my ER copay is higher than a standard office visit but I wa
  17. I think it's a reflection of the downfall of society in general. Back in the day, you could turn your blinker on, check your mirrors, and the driver would let you over especially in a situation like the merge on BC where there is no choice but to get over. Nowadays, you turn your blinker on and people speed up so they won't get caught behind you. There's a huge sense of entitlement on the road today, people have the right to drive and get there first, not the privilege of driving and responsibility of being safe. I was taught to drive defensively, be aware of the entire road and prepare to
  18. I don't think so but I also know it goes both ways but only one way is "wrong" in the media.
  19. Amen to all the above. I worked in ear, nose, throat for a few years, and I can't tell you how many times someone walked into our office with an active nosebleed that had been gushing for at least an hour instead of going to the ER. One person came in holding an entire roll of Bounty to their nose, had been gushing 2 1/2 hours (since 6 that morning and they waited for us to open at 8:30) and was on blood thinners. Oh, yeah, had also taken their insulin but didn't eat breakfast due to the nosebleed. Yeah. Patient didn't want to wait in the ER for several hours. I told patient that if you
  20. For the kid's/grandkid's sake, be nice and tolerate the girlfriend. You're the one they call mom, she's "dad's girlfriend." My hubby and ex-hubby get along pretty well (I get along with my ex pretty well also) and it makes things so much easier with the son we share (my ex and I). My oldest calls my ex dad, calls hubby by his name but has slipped and called him dad a time or two also, and knows that he has 3 parents that love him more than anything, and he loves all three of us and tells us all the time. My aunt is a stepmom and has been for 36 years, since my cousin was 3. To this d
  21. I'm in my mid-30s so I'd have to say 9/11. I can tell you exactly where I was and how I found out about the horror of that day. Yes, I remember the Challenger and Princess Diana but 9/11 just made the world stop turning (to quote Alan Jackson). I was 8 months pregnant, so it really hit me hard because I felt so scared/guilty/worried bringing my child into the world with such chaos, a loss of innocence that he'd never know the world I grew up in. I had also visited New York in 1996 and loved the city, so when I heard the towers had collapsed, my mind couldn't process the thought of not seei
  22. While I have in the past, it's scary to go now. Black Friday used to have deals on everything, now it seems to be just a few items with very limited quantities. I don't need anything that badly that I have to risk life, limb, or sanity to get to Wal-Mart at 2 a.m. and fight. Also, since stores are opening on Thanksgiving, it's kinda lost the appeal because it's all about corporate greed now.
  23. My cousin hasn't been able to see his son in 4 years. His ex moved to another state and she refuses to let him visit. It sucks. My kids miss seeing their cousin and my aunt and uncle miss their grandchild.
