  1. Believe me, Roy Barnes has cost the state plenty, too - we can thank him for the '30-minutes-or-it's-free' pledge on driver's licenses. I daresay there are many folks who think that was a good idea, but it has cost the state a nice chunk of change over the years. In fat times, perhaps it doesn't matter, but in lean times, it adds up.
  2. I think they live in debris-filled areas - I've only seen them in sheds and rock piles, for example. Do you have places like that in your yard? What about a basement or crawlspace that's filled with stuff? Remove/clean-up their favorite environment and they'll go live elsewhere.
  3. Does she *like* dolls? The American Girls dolls are kinda expensive for her to cast it aside after a short while if she didn't care about it. Perhaps you could just get her one or two of the AG books - if she likes *those*, she might be interested in one of the 'girls' she read about. You may also want to look at the 'My Twinn' dolls. You wouldn't have to get her a custom doll, which can be quite pricey - they also sell 'Friend' dolls, which are ready for purchase. I collected those for a time, and they are beautiful, well-made dolls - they can even wear some newborn-size clothes and s
  4. True enough. I'm just waiting for the day when someone says something to me because I don't 'look' as if I need a handicapped parking space.
  5. There's nothing mean-spirited in these responses. When the mom asked 'What else are you planning to serve,' she presumed that something else *was* being served. That's rude. Little Janey's mom could have done one of two things that would have been perfectly acceptable and polite: - Phoned MomOf3 and said that Little Janey wouldn't be able to attend due to other plans or - Fed Little Janey a snack ahead of time, told her to say 'No, thank you' when the pizza was given out and 'Thank you' when she was given cake and ice cream. Bottom line: if you think your kid is going to
  6. The license examiner at DDS will *not* keep your certified copy of your marriage license - he/she will simply scan it into your record and return it to you. As for the check cashing thing, that will depend on the policies of wherever you cash your checks.
  7. A child who doesn't like pizza. What is the world coming to? Tell little Janey's mother that there will be ice cream and cake and you hope she can come. But do NOT, under any circumstances, prepare anything different for the mini-diva.
  8. That's one of the websites NC-17 referenced that provided her with confusing information. That company is based in another state and obviously hasn't researched Georgia's terminology or licensing practices very well. The $30 course is their *defensive driving* course, which does NOT satisfy the Joshua's Law requirement for a class D license. This organization's online driver's ed course is $79.99. Furthermore, online defensive driving courses are NOT accepted by the state of Georgia for points reduction and reinstatement. As I understand it, most insurance companies don't take onlin
  9. Ah. You're talking about the *schools'* websites - I knew as soon as I saw the term 'DMV,' which Georgia has never used for its driver's license division. Regrettable as it is, DDS cannot police the websites of private entities. I will just tell you this: if the school appears on the DDS page of approved schools, that course certificate WILL be accepted at the D/L office. Generally, the school will have already sent it electronically to DDS, and it will appear in the person's driving record. Hopefully you'll get some recommendations for *specific* schools that will help you feel at
  10. If you find that info again, I'd be interested to see it. Driver's education has *never* been required to qualify for a PERMIT in Georgia.
  11. I keep posting links because the DDS website is THE definitive source for information as to what's acceptable. I've had too many kids and parents come in with certificates from courses they 'heard' were OK - but weren't. You'll find slight variations in cost, but there shouldn't be much (if any) variation in the curriculums in the online courses, because that is set by the department. And you may want to go ahead and make that road test appointment, particularly if you want one on a Saturday. Saturdays and school holidays fill up *fast*. Unless you want to go a considerable distance
  12. Again, from the DDS website: http://www.dds.ga.gov/drivers/DLdata.aspx?con=1742926996&ty=ten This is a list of the requirements for a class D license.
  13. From the DDS website: http://www.dds.ga.gov/docs/teen/JoshuaCourseChart.pdf Does your son already have an appointment for his driving test?
  14. I used to work at the driver's license office at the corner of Canton and Piedmont Roads, and for a number of years there were artificial flowers and notes tied to one of the light poles in the parking lot. I was told that a young man had been beaten up (and later died) in a fight that had occurred there years before.
  15. I just bought a new battery for my Verizon phone, and even though the store didn't have the battery, they ordered it for me there and gave me the discount I would have gotten on the website. I love my Verizon service - I just wish they didn't use FedEx for their shipping. I HATE FEDEX!
  16. Oh, yes - I guess they don't believe in vaccination. ( ) As someone else posted, I hope they can keep the baby away - that could be REALLY BAD for her. My sister developed scarlet fever when she had the chicken pox.
  17. If any of you 'in the know' had to guess, what are the largest/busiest food pantries in Paulding County? A friend of mine sent me some info on a food pantry to which she donates food and time, and they have a great idea on how to increase donations - I'd like to pass the idea along to someone here.
  18. I don't get roadside shrines and I don't get those 'In memory of' car decals - to me, they cheapen the loss.
  19. I didn't learn to cook until I married and left home. My mother never liked having us in the kitchen while she was cooking - she preferred to be left alone. My grandmother was the same way - she said people in the kitchen just got in her way.
  20. As soon as he turns 18, he can obtain a regular class C license - in fact, he'll likely receive a letter from DDS giving him the opportunity to trade up online. If he chooses to keep his class D license, he *will* continue to be bound by the restrictions of that license. We found that most teens (and parents!) preferred to upgrade primarily to get rid of the curfew attached to the class D.
  21. I've gotten the chicken salad croissant before - I *think* it was $5.95. Came with chips and a dill pickle spear (no drink). Very tasty!
  22. Kudos to all of you who take the driving task seriously and want to pass that along to your young drivers. Don't forget to take a close look at YOUR driving habits and remember that your kids (despite what they may say) think that whatever *you* do must make it OK for them to do, too. When I was giving driving tests, I was always non-plussed at how many inexperienced drivers failed to look both ways at stop signs or before proceeding on a green light, failed to make complete stops at stop signs, failed to make complete stops when turning right on red, failed to look back while backing up
  23. And unless you're trying to escape from your present persona, you may want to create a signature line that says something like 'Formerly known as nowens98.' People can find that out by looking at your profile, but most don't bother.
  24. You may want to rethink the driving to school thing. I can't think of many more hazardous places than a high school parking lot.
