Maybe instead of stressing about it, just start taking the kids to someplace that doesn't cost anything, like one of the local parks. Most of those have water fountains, but if they don't, water and cracker packs are cheap refreshments. It can be awkward to extend an invitation and ask for money at the same time. Truthfully, I probably wouldn't attempt it - I'd just make sure I was taking the kids to a place where I could afford to foot the bill.
