  1. The Evolution of Education
  2. I agree with you, that writing sentences before you can actually read what you're writing is not an appropriate punishment. However, if the teachers made a kid stand in the corner in today's school setting; the parents would be in a administrator's office wanting the teacher to be disciplined. It is so hard for educators to educate these days because the parents never back the teachers.
  3. I am waiting for suggestions too. Teachers have so few choices for punishment these days.
  4. You're right. If the kids know the parents are not on board with the punishment it can never work.
  5. I am not sure what to say about this particular form of punishment. My boys never were allowed to write sentences because it is physically very hard for them becaue of a medical condition. However, I had to write sentences when when I was in school and I am none the worse for it. In fact, if I may say so myself, I have excellent penmanship. My son was only in the position of being in trouble once in school where he would have to be punished in this fashion. I worked with the teacher and instead of writing 50 sentences, he typed 100 with me standing over him making sure there was no copy a
  6. I can only figure that they allowed this to be on TV because he had hostages. If he had been in that house alone asking for for TV time I don't think we would have had our March Madness basketball game messed up with his stupid arse!
  7. I am taking my boys tomorrow afternoon to try this place out. They were both born in Louisiana and cut their first teeth on crawfish. They will be great food critics.
  8. You can PM overit, I know her husband can do this and sometimes takes on extra jobs on the weekend.
  9. If my child, who has Tourettes (and has never yelled curse words) suddenly developed the symptom of yelling curse words out in the classroom, would he have the same "right" to stay in the classroom during those episodes? Should I insist on the other kids having to wear ear plugs during those times? I don't think so. He should have to leave the room. Would it be his fault? No, it is a manifestation of his disability, but it wouldn't be fair to the 30 other kids in the classroom for him to stay in the room. Life is not fair. This little girl should learn that now. They could have a table
  10. I realize that children are entitled to a free and appropriate education. Heck, I have two that have required accomodations in the classrooms. However, I do feel that for fear of litigation the schools are forced to err on the extreme side when it comes to accomodating children with special needs these days. This is nothing like the equal rights that you speak of, because there is nothing equal about it. Many times the rights of the general population are not considered when placement of a child with an IEP is done. This is because, although the average kid is entitled to a free and appr
  11. ...when you get up in the morning with the worst hangover ever, body aches, headache, feeling like a truck hit you. Then you realize you have not had in alcohol in months.
  12. I am so proud of the students at SPHS today. There were prayers, counselors and some students just crying in the hallways. While many kids were having a gathering in the courtyard this morning to remember Brigette the bell rang for first period. The kids in the hallways were as quiet as mice because no one wanted to interrupt the vigil. It was really nice to see the kids being so respectful of each other's feelings. Brigette truly touched many lives in her short time here.
  13. There are no words. My thoughts are with her family.
  14. I hate it too. Just when my internal clock gets used to getting up at this time someone goes and screws it up. I like the time we are on now. I like the feeling of getting the extra hour of sleep in the morning even if it is not real.
  15. Yes, he is considered management. He's an engineer. We had no choice this year for insurance at all. I am not crazy about the LM Healthworks. We had Cigna HMO with Lockheed for 10 years and even though the copays had gone up over the years it was still a good plan for us. No we have a $2000 deductible before the insurance pays anything. After that it pays 85% on most things. I know that is not bad compared to a lot of people's deductibles out there but I it is still a big jump from what we are used to. I do like the new pharmacy coverage though.
  16. Lockheed in Marietta is one of the few places that still have a pension plan for retirees not just a 401K. That is what was up for vote. It is my understanding that the agreement is to do away with the pension plan and for new hires and go solely to 401K as a retirement plan. (which is the way that most companies are now doing it) As far as the insurance I am not sure of the HMO options that are mentioned in the other post. It must be something for retirees only because as of last year Lockheed employees no longer have an option of insurance providers. Our only option is LM Healthworks.
  17. I would rather eat beans every day for a year while I go back to school than continue doing the job I have now!
  18. My son is a senior (in high school) and I wish I could find something to improve his memory. He can't remember to do a darn thing I tell him to.
  19. I just ordered a kindle 3G, and I am waiting for it to arrive anyday. I did do my research and thought this was the best one for me. I like that fact that the kindle's 3G is free and the screen is very easy to read as well. I don't intend to surf the net on it but the fact that I can (albeit slowly) is a plus. The Nook color version was hard to resist but after looking at it I really liked the texy on the Kindle better. However, if I were planning on buying magazines to be downloaded I would have chosen the Nook due to the color factor. The reviews for both were very good. I will let yo
  20. Thanks I will keep an eye on it.
  21. My son went over to the Publix shopping center and looked for where the Little Ceasars is being built to see if there was a sign about applications. He said he can't figure out where it is going to be. Is it on the end by the nail place or closer to the Mexican place?
  22. Any news on the dad/uncle who was driving the kids to school? I know he refused treatment, probably because he was more concerned about the kids. He has to be physically hurt though. He is such a nice man and I hope the best for all involved.
  23. YEAH!!! They need something to celebrate and smile about.
