Was any of the stuff labeled with his name and/or phone number? I put our phone number on just about everything that the kids have to take to games/camps/overnight trips, etc.

Did you give her cash or a check? I don't think you are barred from going to court just because you don't have a receipt. You two had a verbal agreement and while they are more difficult to prove they are still legally binding. Can you show where you withdrew the money (if cash) or produce a cashed check? Are there others who knew of the loan agreement or witnessed it? Not sure what the statute of limitations is on something like this but it wouldn't hurt to stop by small claims court and get some information about filing.
