  1. It's all being done through Ombudsmen this year, just like last year.
  2. Where are you seeing that the ones from several years back are included?
  3. I don't suppose you called or emailed the teacher first. Context can be everything If you haven't done that, don't be surprised if the principal tells you to do just that As for teacher appreciation--I think that anything at this point would be good, even a heartfelt note. Teacher morale is SO low at this point.
  4. Please tell your teachers to make their voices heard. The county has a choice here, and if they truly hear that we can make this work, they may be more likely to vote in that direction. I know that PAGE will be there, and I haven't heard yet about GAE. Because the meeting is in the morning, most teachers are unable to make it (insert snide comment here). However, we need to be sure that our voices and opinions are heard.
  5. Certified personnel have a state salary, plus a local supplement (which generally makes up about 10-20% of the total pay). Cutting that local supplement is akin to cutting teacher pay across the board between 10-20%. For myself, that is a $6000 pay cut. It is absolutely horrifying that they are even considering this as an option, because it's basically asking teachers to work with more difficult conditions (class sizes, furloughs, lack of supplies), but paying them so much less. Most teachers would MUCH prefer furloughs. We know that, if needed, we can make the same amount of pr
  6. Oh, I'd be all over that as well. Surely the police are getting involved in instances like that.
  7. Except that PCB has been a major Spring Break/graduation trip destination since the 1990's. At this point, I'd have a hard time believing anyone could *not* know what goes on there. We go every summer, but we stay in a high-end condo that has a specific policy against single guests under the age of 25. Since we made that switch, we've never had any real issues with the raucous and obnoxious behavior. As for traffic, we discovered the ease of middle and back beach roads a few years ago, and it made all the difference in the world

    LOST

I feel like last night finally gave me some kind of idea that this show is not going to end well for those of us who really want to know the answers. There seems to be no way to explain what is needed in just 7 episodes. In addition, when we were first introduced to the 2 men, I wondered if the man in black wasn't God, while Jacob was then the devil. Obviously that's no longer an option. On the other hand, as my husband said, as long as this one doesn't end with a kid and a snowglobe, then it's not really the worst ending ever
  9. There isn't enough insurance in the world for me to take on that responsibility. School nurses are essential, and honestly that money could be found quite easily, since it comes down to just one person's salary per school.
  10. Based on the idea that I'd lose 4 days a month, that would cost me around $10K each year--almost a 20% pay cut. While I love my job and don't take it for granted, I'm not sure that with a significant pay cut, on top of increased class sizes, on top of increased amounts of my own money going into the classroom, in addition to the 1038403 things they are now needing/requiring/wanting that I'd even want to stay in the classroom. And that makes me very, very sad.
  11. I'd be very interested in how this affects teacher pay. If it's the same amount of hours, there would be no difference. However, if you took those 8 hours away each week, that'd be like taking 4 furlough days a month, which is quite a chunk of change.
  12. I love that song. I have it on iTunes, but I didn't realize it was a ringtone as well. I have several set for different people: default: After Tonight--Justin Nozuka husband: Eternity--Big and Rich and Lucky--Jason Mraz sister: Please Man--Big and Rich mom: I'd love you to want me--Lobo (this was her song with my dad, and was played at his memorial when they showed their pictures together--without that story, it's just creepy )
  13. Geodon is indeed often used for bipolar disorder (off-label), and is good for the more manic symptoms such as irritability, grandiosity, impulsivity, and racing thoughts. I've personally never heard of it being prescribed on its own as an antidepressant, so I would assume that the doctor has concerns beyond depression. If he hasn't expressed that to your sister, and only prescribed this drug and Vistaril (which is used for anxiety off-label), then I would certainly have her call him and get an explanation of why she needs to be on this particular medication--esp. when there are so many others
  14. Prayers said for her. Is this Dr. Robbins that is with Dr. Echimendia and Roswell OBGYN? Those were the doctors I used with my son, and they were amazing!
  15. Thundersnow means that a huge amount of snow falls in a very short period of time: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2009/03/090303-thunder-snow-storm.html It's a pretty neat phenomenon, and just like everyone else on here, my husband came upstairs a few minutes ago saying "It's thundering--last time I remember that happening with a possible snowstorm was 1993"
  16. I've had my morning coffee each day that I've been on it, and haven't had any problems. The key is definitely to keep your water intake up--the days that I don't do that, I don't feel as good. I've been very pleased with it so far, but I have to stop taking it in 2 weeks for an upcoming surgery. I'll be interested to see how it goes those 2 weeks that I'm off of it. However, the surgery I'm having will inevitably cause some weight loss, so I figure if I gain a little back, it shouldn't matter too much
  17. There is no teacher's union in Georgia. There are professional organizations, but calling them a union is a misnomer, as they have no political power, outside of lobbying for the group of teachers.
  18. Administrators at both the state and local level have forgotten about educating the whole child, and are instead bowing down to the cheap, easy way that politicians, who can't even balance a budget, came up with to measure success? Oh, wait--that was a rhetorical question.
  19. I realize that you don't know me, but you couldn't be more off-base when you talk about kids that others may have given up on. Suffice it to say, I have gone to the ends of the world to find ways to connect with some of my kids and help them see the value of education (not just in the school but outside as well). Like many other teachers, I went on to graduate school and my M.Ed thesis was specifically targeting one group of children with special needs. I didn't get in to education for the perks--I got into it because I DID feel like I was given up on in school and I want better for the s
  20. I lied--I do have one more thing to say. If either of my children ever decided to 'drop-out', they'd be driven to school every single day, escorted into the building, and I'd get a renewed 10-12th grade education. Drop-out rates absolutely should NOT be contributed solely to schools. Parents have to sign the form, and therefore bear the brunt as well. However, I completely disagree with the idea that all HS students should be on the college-track. There should be plenty of alternates to help all children be successful outside of public school, even the ones that aren't choosing c
  21. So then why do you believe that SAT scores should be used to rank states? Why did you look to test scores in general to prove your 'point' that Paulding County schools must suck like the suckiest bunch of sucks who ever sucked? I'm getting punchy and never should have opened this thread back up. Have a good night Naturegirl--and remember, just because we rode around in the back of the family truckster standing tall with no seatbelt (and lived to tell about it), you shouldn't try that now
  22. She's terrible and a disgrace. However, there is a difference between 'spin' and actually looking at the data beyond face value.
  23. First, let me say this--Paulding County schools are not perfect, and there is plenty to be done to make them better. However, just throwing out a list of schools and not bothering to look at any kind of disaggregation of the data is the exact same thing that the media and politicians do. Do you know why? Because they know that the public is just lazy enough to take it at face value, and never question it. I'm sorry, but I find it comical how some people just trot out any bit of information to say that public schools aren't doing their jobs, as if teachers don't know that there are some se
  24. I need to bookmark that site for the 1843038403293 other times that someone comes on here screaming "Do you even KNOW where GA falls?".
