  1. ...which in turn gives him another chance to appeal his conviction, if the evidence warrants it. I have no opinion on whether he is guilty or not, as I haven't done a full-on study of the case. But, if you use the death penalty, then the onus should be on the state to ensure that they have exhausted all possible options to be sure that the man they are about to kill is actually guilty. Whatever the outcome, I hope that the new hearing will put to rest any doubts, on either side of the road.
  2. I figured this was coming. Troy Davis' case has been controversial for many years, and Flynnt is not the first person of notoriety to plead for him. Bob Barr, Jimmy Carter, the Pope...the list goes on. Davis may very well have killed Officer MacPhail. Hoewver, more than half of the 'witnesses' recanted their testimony. One of the two witnesses that have stayed with it was actually the original suspect. The Supreme Court just granted him another chance at appeal based on new evidence (in an unprecedented decision--something they hadn't done in decades), and I hope that they final
  3. We heard it ALL.DAY.LONG from the kids today I hadn't seen it yet, since AI is still on the DVR. But, I must have heard about it at least 100 times today.
  4. This is completely untrue. The days off for the flood were waived by the state. These 2 days will likely be made up by teachers as furlough days, but there is no reason why students would all of a sudden need to make up an entire week. At that point, you'd be paying teachers for an extra day, since they've made up 3 days already. The school board has to meet and decide on any schedule changes. Until that happens, these rumors do nothing more than get people upset before there's a reason to be.
  5. Yep. Bus drivers are starting to get calls apparently.
  6. I would say that most teachers, myself included, see a tremendous value in having a calendar balanced out with plenty of breaks. Honestly, I could not care less if we went to school from Labor Day to Memorial Day (In snow! Uphill! Both ways!). It wasn't the most effective way to do things then, nor is it best practice now. Most teachers that I work with prefer option B, because we saw such a positive impact from our unexpected 'break' this past September from the flooding. It seemed as though it really broke up that long period between August and Thanksgiving, and made an impact on both b
  7. If you're looking for the Wii Active game (retails $59.99), the Blockbuster in New Hope had them yesterday for $39.99. They had several after I bought mine, and they are new. I've never really looked there for games to purchase, but one of the guys said that their games are generally marked way down to compete with the bigger stores. I just couldn't believe I found the game, that I've been wanting for several months, for $20 cheaper than anywhere else

  9. Just because it's rare doesn't make it any less real to the child it is happening to And actually, recent research is showing that the ultra-rapid cycling may be a hallmark of early-onset pediatric bipolar disorder, making it ever more necessary for the new DSM being released to modify the diagnosis of EO BP and have its own set of criteria. Most children with bipolar disorder do not qualify for the diagnosis under the incredibly outdated DSM-IV, making modifications way overdue and necessary. Good discussion, PM.
  10. I think the term 'depressed' has blurred the line between real mental illness and situational sadness for society at large. As for bipolar children, like I said, if a child is actually bipolar there is no doubt in the mind of the people who work with them (if they are aware of what they are looking for). I guess that I've been lucky in as much as the doctors and therapists that I've worked with on this subject were very clear on what constitutes bipolar (two of them having worked under Papolos), because I've never heard or seen someone who actually knows what they are talking about refer
  11. I meant to come back to this ;-) My own master's degree thesis was on working with bipolar children in the classroom. A lot of the research I used dealt with ODD, and I was amazed at the number of ODD diagnoses given out, sometimes in kids as young as 4, because everyone knows that a 4 year-old is anything but defiant.
  12. In my experience, the bipolar diagnosis is not handled lightly by the psychiatrists in this area. Unless there is a marked family history (since BP has such a huge genetic component), many doctors will not address it as a possibility without a great deal of history-taking, observations, blood-work, medical testing, and ultimately trials of low-dose meds. The sad part of that is that bipolar is absolutely a real mental illness, and the idea that it can't affect children is erroneous (and egregious when you take into account the number of kids who are lost by the time they reach adolescence
  13. It has nothing to do with political correctness. It has to do with you talking out of your ass about a subject you obviously know very little about. ODD has no neurobiological component, and is often a stand-in diagnosis when a doctor (who, by the way, looks at the parenting of the child as part of the process) has no organic cause to explain the behavior. So, on that part you are partially right, as WFAL stated, ODD is often thrown around when it is not the actual issue. However, ADD is neurobiological, which is why giving an ADD child a stimulant actually calms them and helps them
  14. Ummmm, no. For most people, it has little to do with being a gay man (though there will be a few who can't see past that). For most people, it has to do with the fact that he came on stage and unleashed a show that most were not expecting and many were shocked by. Would we have been shocked if it was Madonna? No, because that's what we expect from her. However, Madonna spent 10 years building a fan following before she went all hypersexual. Lambert's problem is that many of his fans followed him from American Idol. While they understood (and appreciated for the most part) his eccentr
  15. Has he been diagnosed with any comorbid disorders? ODD is many times coupled with something like bipolar, ADD, and occasionally with the disorders on the autism spectrum. He definitely needs to be in with a good therapist (play therapy may still be appropriate for that age). Is he medicated? Just FYI, if a child is bipolar and they are given certain classes of drugs (such as anti-depressants and stimulants), they become very defiant and can even become psychotic, which sometimes looks like ODD. The Explosive Child is a great place to start, and it's a pretty popular book--you should be ab
  16. What you went through was absolutely horrifying, and my heart breaks for you. However, a tragic life event does not, in and of itself, cause depression. A chemical imbalance in the brain causes depression. For that reason, people who are suffering from a tragic life event are not necessarily clinically depressed, and thus, can make the decision to pull themselves out of it (usually with a lot of therapy and possibly medication). People who are clinically depressed can no more pull themselves out of it than a diabetic can will themselves to not need extra insulin. Again, what you
  17. I'm pretty sure that both of these are in the same group. Just to add--the office was very good to work with as well.
  18. Dr. Bryant Wilson at Piedmont He did my gallbladder surgery in January and was very nice, easy to work with, and while he had a bit of a wait, he made arrangements for me to come in sooner as I was incredibly sick and unable to eat.
  19. Mmmmmm. Peppermint mocha GT--I have 2 bottles, and I barely use it. Do you want me to send one to you?
  20. 9 hours is a long time for a middle schooler to be in school. I'm just saying.
  21. Tamiflu (and Relenza) are antiviral medications that can lessen the severity and time of symptoms. They have to be taken within 48 hours of the onset of symptoms to be effective, however. And, just FYI, but it is possible to have the flu and strep. My son did that last February, and my husband tested positive for both on Sunday. The Dr. told him that he was the 5th person that day who had tested positive for both, so both must be going around.
  22. What we've been told is that everything that is testing positive as flu right now is H1N1, as that is the only flu going around. No one is testing for specific H1N1 anymore, unless a person is hospitalized, or they have a death that may be flu related. It is hitting another peak again (like it did before the flood)
  23. This is my favorite BF ad page: http://bfads.net/ And, I agree with the poster below--I could probably find better prices throughout the year, but I *love* going shopping on Black Friday. The only day I've missed, since getting married 10 years ago, was the year I was 8 months pregnant with my daughter, and even then we were at K-Mart that morning for a TV (we just went home right afterward so I could rest it off )
  24. I think that's pretty much everywhere.
  25. You rock, GT! This was 1000 times better than last year (and I'm so glad that you guys listened about putting the 'jumpies' on the pavement). We had a ball this year, and I can't tell you enough how awesome a job you did. And, unlike last year, the $36 we paid for 2 kids and 2 shirts was SOO totally worth it. Go home and have a nice glass of wine and a funny movie
