  1. I don't get what you're saying. The passenger car would be even more likely to slide off the roadway. I certainly don't think the buses should be out there either. When I went out this morning, there were plenty of roads still closed. Why ask teenagers to get out there, having to find detours, for something like football practice?
  2. I'm sorry, but I respectfully disagree. There are washed out roads, even on the E. Paulding side of the county, and people getting out on them aren't helping the situation. I'm not saying that everyone should stay home, but I think it's a bad move to have kids (esp. teenagers that are driving), out in these conditions. The sun is great, but it doesn't quite lay the cement back on the roadway.
  3. Obviously, if they're willing to have parents and kids on the road in dangerous conditions.
  4. Nope, it was the live program. And the weird thing was that it was said repeatedly throughout the broadcast--starting at 5:30am through 7am. I can't imagine that they'll open during the scheduled 'off' days. With teachers and students having already made travel plans, that's just shooting yourself in the foot. With the economy like it is, and counties already being 'creative' with their interpretation of the 180 day law, plus the looming additional furlough days, I figure that they'll just make these days unpaid at the end of the year.
  5. This was on AJC.com: Water damage to the county's schools is estimated at around $500,000. Five damage crews surveyed the damage Tuesday to compile the estimates. The damage estimates, once finalized, will be sent to GEMA officials, according to Michael Jones, county administrator. http://www.ajc.com/news/up-to-the-minute-143387.html
  6. Seriously? School is not a daycare. If you need to go to work, I'm sure there are daycares that offer drop-in rates around you. In my completely snarky opinion, you should be thankful that your biggest annoyance is that school is closed and you have to make parental decisions about the welfare of your child, and not a flooded house, or something much worse. For me, I'm thankful that my biggest annoyance are people who think I'm nothing more than a glorified babysitter. You said that so much better than I did.
  7. Notsomuch. Lots of people have already made plans for that time (including teachers ) With the economy being what it is this year, I'm thinking they'll make every effort to get around having to make the days up, as that would cost them a LOT more money. And, if they're being made up in the summer, many would remark that since they're after CRCT there's no reason to make them up. I'm just saying
  8. We were told to expect up to 7 furlough days from January to June. I have a feeling that's what they will use this for, because at this point, it's no different than calling school for furlough days (since there's only 1 workday other than post-planning).
  9. We called about it yesterday, and it was going to be about 1/2 of our current yearly payment. In addition, there were 2 deductibles--for your possessions and for your house. We were in the thick of things, so to speak, with the rain and got about 20". However, we had no standing water at the house because we sit atop a hill and it all drained out to the yard. So, I don't think it's something we'll add at this point.
  10. Where is he trying to get to? My husband was able to go up I-20 to 285 to 75 and then to Cartersville. He came up Hwy. 61 from Cartersville to Dallas. It took him 4 hours, but he made it home safely.
  11. Are you talking about the kids at Clarkdale? They were evacuated throughout the afternoon. When the portables started floating away around 11am, Cobb County decided it might be good to send the middle schoolers home early. That school is now completely underwater. If you go to myfoxatlanta.com, you can see the video. ETA: Sorry! I didn't realize this was a different school. Again, the person/people who decided not to close Cobb County schools should absolutely be held responsible for situations like this.
  12. Umm, yeah. In New Hope (about 3 miles from Northside), we have had about 8" since 5am this morning, for a grand total of about 20" since Saturday.
  13. No. 278 is closed in SEVERAL different places between 92 and I-20.
  14. I don't think 61 is going to be an option--didn't Villa Rica/Carrollton get hit as hard as we did? I'm trying to keep him on the north end of the county, as we don't seem to have nearly the flooding issues that S. Paulding did. But, he may end up in a hotel tonight.
  15. Any suggestions on getting to New Hope from Maxham Rd. at Thornton? 278 is closed, Humphries Hill is closed...
  16. Moses Middle School is off of Old County Farm. It sits down in a gulley, so I'm sure they're probably going to have a mess down there.
  17. The lack of live coverage was due to the lightening all morning. They can't put up the antenna when it's that bad. I turned off the news because the weather guy on 11 Alive was driving me insane. This little system that's basically stalled over Paulding/Douglas has been 'on the move' according to him and should be 'moving out in a few minutes' for the past 2 hours.
  18. The only thing that comes close would be Hurricane Opal, but that wasn't this bad in terms of flooding (though it was exacerbated by the tornadoes and downed trees everywhere).
  19. Most Paulding County pre-k classes adhere to the Paulding schedule, so if they are closed the pre-k is likely to be closed as well. Generally speaking, I think the situation with the previous admin was not that they were waiting on Cobb, but that she didn't want to make the call period. There were times we were sent to school (think 2005---massive hurricane approaching) that we shouldn't have been. I had little doubt that Ragsdale would make the right call, however, and I'm glad that he did.
  20. Not only that, but with all the rain still to come, I didn't want to be stranded.
  21. We were having this conversation at dinner, and I thought it was completely out of the question. Looking at the amount of rain we've gotten since then (2") and seeing all that's still to come is making me wonder.
  22. Call the Children's Healthcare nurse line: (404) 250-KIDS They have a list of questions they'll go through with you and give you a better idea of whether you should wait or go. As an aside, I've always been told that if it is a bad appendix, you would be doubled over in pain if you tried to jump.
  23. I stopped watching after the season that Evil Dick won. I can't stand to see stupid, mean, and purposefully nasty people come out victorious. Had Jeff not won the Coup de Tat, I doubt I would have kept watching this season, as it seemed that Jessie/Natalie/Chima were running the show.
  24. Wooohooo! I wonder if he will put up Russ and Natalie. Surely they see through Natalie. This has been the best season to watch.
