Well, knowing about that, and what's going on in the world at any given time, requires actually PAYING ATTENTION and WANTING to know what is going on and WATCHING or READING the news. Unfortunately, finding students of ANY age who CARE to do any of this is pretty much impossible. So, as much as I think said behavior was wholly inappropriate (as is your "student wearing a blue dress" comment, to be honest), you're going to have to find someone else to blame this on. Like the parents. Or, heaven forbid, the students themselves who chose to behave this way.

Can't tell you how many arguments I've had with kids about the pants. I'm afraid some of our colleagues have adopted the "whatever" attitude when it comes to the pants thing. Believe it or not, things are much better than under the previous administration, the kids keep talking about how they "never had to follow the stupid rules before"
