Were your kids hard to wake up this morning?
cliograd replied to childhiram's topic in RECENT TOPICS
Don't have any kids, but I teach, and I know I was DEFINITELY hard to wake up this morning...found one of my alarms on the floor on the other side of the room when I finally did get up LOTS of kids were late this morning, so apparently lots of them had difficulty getting into the groove this morning... -
been busy with work, by the time I get home I am too tired to come up with a response to anything I see on here...

green eggs & green grits for breakfast, then whatever the Irish Heritage Society serves up after the parade...I'm in Savannah, so it's all Irish

Yeah, that pretty much seems to sum it up, unfortunately. Oh well, this teacher has a very long day ahead of me tomorrow. My students like to have spirited, intelligent, thought-provoking, respectful discussions. Makes my job so rewarding, but they do keep me on my toes and wear me out sometimes!

I never told you to "prove" it. I don't need to. Learning is a lifelong activity, I am always seeking out new information and never just blindly accept what anyone tells me. I use the brain with which I was blessed. I do not feel any need to impress you or anyone, nor do I ever feel the need to downgrade anyone. I never said that, nor implied it. If that is what you took from the statement, that is your issue, not mine. Did you really just tell me to go learn "real black history"? Seriously? Do you have any other way to respond to anyone who does not think like you other than to

Yeah, and now I am corrupting our youth with my "liberal" teaching philosophy of insisting that my students learn to think for themselves and use the brain the good Lord gave them.
-
As do I. I am a teacher. I have a degree in Broad Field Social Studies. I didn't have to google anything I have posted this evening. Your petty insults are sad.

Perfect example. Hero worship and admiration of someone's good qualities often leads us to overlook true shortcomings. Another perfect case is Robert E. Lee. When Tom Connelly wrote "The Marble Man", which dared to actually acknowledge Lee's flaws, he was reviled and even threatened by more than a few folks who saw such as nothing less than sacrilege. But, the fact is that Lee, like Washington, was a good man, but not such a great general. Good luck finding THAT in any history book.

We get it. You know how to find websites that agree with you and you know how to post links to them. Congratulations. With all due respect, you are the last person I will go to for any learning. I have my own brain for such things. Since I anticipate your response will be something about my being liberal or learning from liberals or whatever (your standard response to anyone who dares think differently from you), I will go ahead and correct you now. I am neither liberal, nor conservative. I am educated.

The fact that inter-tribal warfare in Africa led to enslavement of enemies is taught. I haven't seen where anyone claimed it wasn't, or that it isn't true. It is a documented historical fact. But the idea that it somehow lessens what other people (i.e. white slave traders) did is the epitome of so-called "revisionist" history. The "two wrongs make a right, or at least make something not as bad" way of thinking has no place in any classroom.

Also, historical evidence is being discovered all the time. As we find more archaeological evidence, written evidence, primary sources, etc., we learn much more and often get a different perspective on events. The idea that the opinions of those who lived during a time period, and how events affected / influenced the ordinary man, is actually a relatively new concept in historical study. This often does not sit well with those who do not like to hear opinions that differ from their own.

First of all, there is no possible way to cover everything in a survey History course, which is really what a high school history class is. Forget trying to get in depth with a topic, there just isn't time. Every year we seem to have more interruptions in the instructional schedule (TESTING, anyone??), which throws the best laid plans into more and more disarray every school year. As long as the social studies are not considered in AYP, this will never change. The emphasis is on English and Math, because the results on those graduation tests are what determine AYP at the high school level. Eng

Yep, I'm there -
Default is the bells of Big Ben marking the hour (scares the crap out of me every time, but I always hear it) For Mom, it's Aretha belting out "Respect" (another one that scares the crap out of me and everyone around me when it goes off) For my brother it's usually the Tomahawk chop, but since St. Patrick's day is upon us, it's "The Wild Irish Rover" For the rest of the folks in my department (Science), "She Blinded me with Science", of course!

I know Allison gave Mrs. Bennett the actual paper that he turned in. Next time I see her I will mention a framed copy, I think that is a fabulous idea... The more I hear about Mrs. Bennett, I am convinced Rajaan's strength came from her. She'd have to be to deal with everything that has been thrown her way, even before this unfathomable tragedy. I found out today that they had only moved into the house where this happened 6 months ago when their home was foreclosed on...and to add insult to injury, her car was repossessed last week. This is a woman who lost her husband 8 years ago in a

glad to know it's not just me...it's been a heck of 2 weeks and I am absolutely drained...but I HAVE to do laundry & go to the grocery store, since neither has been done in 3 weeks but all I really want to do is sit on the couch & watch the hockey game...
-
Tell me about it! Allison told me she had a piece he'd written on "strength", but none of us were prepared for this. By the time she finished reading it at the memorial service, there wasn't a dry eye in the place.

By now I'm sure everyone has heard about how McEachern lost one of our shining lights last week. The outpouring of support from all over the country has been amazing, and it has done all of us good to know that so many people have been touched by Rajaan's story. I'm so sorry that more people will not have the opportunity to meet and get to know Rajaan. Everything you have heard about him is true, no exaggeration. Actually, it is impossible for us to convey just how truly wonderful he was, and, to us, still is. To that end, I want to share something Rajaan wrote for his Lit class just a week

4-Day School Weeks Under Consideration In Georgia
cliograd replied to MillCreek's topic in RECENT TOPICS
Many school systems in various parts of the country have gone to the 4 day week, some did it a long time ago. The savings in utility & transportation costs are a no-brainer, but they have documented many other savings and benefits to the system as a whole. Student absenteeism is down, student achievement is up. Teachers can now use the day off each week to take their own kids to the doctor (or take themselves. yes, teachers do have legit reasons to take time off during the school year), so substitutes are not needed nearly as much, saving even more money. Some systems went to the 4 day w -
Much better than when I drove to Powder Springs at 7 this morning...mostly dry, still some wet spots that are probably going to re-freeze tonight...biggest problem I had on the way home was big chunks of snow falling off the trees & traffic lights and scaring the crud out of me when they hit the car
-
Maybe they were bored sitting at home and wanted to be able to get on P.Com?? In all seriousness, I agree with the poster that said there would be more crime b/c people figure the police are busy with accidents, or wouldn't risk injury by driving fast to respond to a call about a crime in progress...

Just got in from Target, 278 isn't too bad yet, very slushy, but not frozen yet. As the temp drops & the number of cars on the road decreases, that is definitely going to change. I've never seen Target that dead. Wouldn't surprise me at all if they closed early. Chik-fil-A is closed, so is Panda Express. Glad to see people are, for the most part, taking this seriously, and that some places care more about the safety of their employees than making a few bucks.
