Be AWARE always ... got this come-on for a virus/trojan in email
afriendlygeek replied to gpatt0n's topic in RECENT TOPICS
Pubby, this is a great representative sample of how email can be used to infect computers. I probably receive about 5 emails per day in my personal yahoo account with a link to a site that could cause an infection. I have pasted below a few paragraphs from a book that I am currently writing that addresses malicious emails. I have not had my personal grammar Nazi proof it yet, so don't beat me up over that. However, if there are some points that you feel need clarification, I would appreciate your feedback. -
*VENT* - Electronic Stores and overpriced accessories

But don't you know that the one's and zero's might get misaligned or tumble end over end if they are forced to travel over a $4 HDMI cable? ($4 is what a 6 footer cost at monoprice.com). I would love to watch a salesman wiggle and squirm while attempting to justify a $100 cable when you can buy the same thing for $4. -

You are smarter than me WB. I was unable to even think of a question to ask. -

It works for me. Are you getting an error message?

You could try Best Buy, but my guess is that they will not help. I think they have a 14 day return policy on computers. Try giving the Dell customer service folks a call again and explain that you cannot live without the computer. If that does not work, ask to speak to a supervisor. If that does not work, call Dell headquarters at 512-388-4400 When you call, act very sad and not mad.
-
After thinking about this a little more, I would really push Dell to send me another computer if they think it is a hardware problem. After all, this is a brand new computer. iIf you send it to their service center, there is no telling when you will get it back. If they think it is a software problem, they should have instructed you to back up your data and run the recovery disk.

Try to start the computer in safe mode. Instructions are here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Start-your-computer-in-safe-mode Attach a thumb drive and download the pictures. If you cannot start in safe mode, the hard drive needs to be removed and attached to another computer. I can do that for you for a small fee.

Not to hijack, but this is appropriate for the topic. The iPhone 4 was released this week and there are some issues. If you are thinking about getting one, you should read this article: http://news.cnet.com/8301-31021_3-20008799-260.html?part=rss&subj=news&tag=2547-1_3-0-20

I'm glad he won, but they are both winners in my book.

That's fantastic. This is a great example of how being persistent with a company can pay off. Hats off to Acer for covering the parts and labor even though it was out of warranty. Thanks WB - you are so kind.

My son turned 8...time for condoms?
afriendlygeek replied to dumbestgirlintheworld's topic in RECENT TOPICS
I have a hard time keeping up with the rules. Little plastic army men are banned. Condoms are not only okay, but they will hand them out in school. http://content.usato...=33823209.story I'm so out of touch, I've began keeping a pictorial directory of the bad things and the good things a kid can have at school. This is bad: This is good: -
Yes you can via USB. You need to fully investigate this option. After doing a little more checking I found that Sprint limits 3G data (which is probably what you will have at your house), to 5GB per month. The 4G data for now is confined mainly to the large cities.
-
I did not think anyone was offering an unlimited data plan. This is good to know. I have both Comcast and ATT for internet. I'm not paying for the top speed on ATT as it is just my backup. One thing to keep in mind if you go with someone other than ATT for DSL, you will still have ATT DSL. It's just that another company's name will be on the bill. I had this arrangement for years with Earthlink and every time I called them with a problem they asked me to hold while they called ATT. One day I just decided that I could call ATT myself and avoid talking to the poor fool in India.

I was thinking more like 5 to 10 days. The system that we have now that allows 25 years is a complete joke. If that's the best we can do, we need to do away with the death penalty. I think it is unfair to the victims family for them to have to wait 25 years for the sentence to be carried out.
