There are many illegal aliens in the school system. We don't require social security cards or citizenship papers. You just have to bring shot records, utitlity bills, and a birth certificates to enroll in school. We pay a lot of money for special teachers to teach these kids English. Not all students in the ELL (English Language Learning, I think) programs are illegal, but a good percentage are. Georgia has a lower ranking due to SAT scores given to ALL students, not just students who want to go to college. The low ranking really isn't accurate. Many states only offer the SAT to students who are college-bound. Students in Paulding who were serious about their scores did as well, or better, than other states. I have had students move in from all parts of the country. They aren't all light years ahead of Georgia. Achievement has as much to do with home environment as anything else. You mentioned your son just recently got this teacher. Did they hire a teacher in the middle of the year or is this a supply teacher or substitute teacher? What happened to the other teacher? I know it must be really hard to step into a classroom in the middle of a year. If you don't support this teacher at home, whether you like him/her or not, it only makes the situation worse for everybody. Just my thoughts (I used to sub waaaaaay back in the day, so I know how hard it can be).

Teachers usually get something from the administration or PTA for teacher appreciation week. While I think it's a nice thought, we get gifts at Christmas, for our birthdays, and sometimes on the last day of school. I think it's a bit much to buy for teachers more than once or twice a year. Buy your kids some pencils and paper to get through the rest of the year instead. Words convey the same meaning as a gift, so maybe send an email or ecard to your child's teacher if you want them to know they are appreciated. (Sorry teachers, don't hate me for that.)

...and how much they are really worth? We have all been to college. The same colleges they attended (besides the admin degree mills). I learn more from talking to my friends spread out around the county, and that is free. If I cave on SPLOST, and everyone probably knows I oppose the wasteful and frivolous spending proposed, it will be because I don't want to pay more per mil on my house. That is the scare tactic that works with me.

That is awesome. I am always so appreciative of donations so I don't have to ask for handouts. I know some families are barely making it and it makes them feel bad when they can't donate like they want to. People tease me because I stockpile things. I think it will pay off next year. I'm a little worried one the admins I have terrorized with my smart mouth will end up on my team. I really need to learn the karma rules. lol.

That is a great idea! I hate asking for money, so the county or school should do that for us. We had a supply cupboard when I was growing up. Paper (that newsprint stuff with the blue lines), pencils, art supplies were available at all times. There was never an excuse to not do your work.

Can you imagine your new team member being someone who came from the board? lol. There are two know-it-alls where I work now that drive the rest of us NUTS. If they put admins back on teams, that will suck for everybody. They will tell on us all the time. Are you carnies? You can't learn calculus working at a fair. Keep your options open, some kids HATE being home schooled. I know from working in a school that at least half of the kids pulled for home schooling come back. I would give next year a try, you might get some really good teachers.
