  1. I think sometimes we get "president" confused with "king". The president has the right to order all FEDERAL agencies and holdings (military, embassies, post office, etc.) to fly the flags at half-staff. He CANNOT order state or local governments to do it, or make it mandatory for them. Most state agencies DID lower their flags because Byrd was a state senator. Asking local governments to fly half-staff is a reach. I'm not sure why they would except in WV.
  2. $5. I don't order it very often, but if I am too lazy to cook or hop in the car to pick it up, it's worth $5 to have it magically appear at my door. We usually just order one pizza. Have you noticed most of the delivery people are older? It used to be a job for teenagers, but not now. Either somone is feeding their family this way or people are taking second jobs to make ends meet or pay off debt.
  3. Traffic stops are dangerous. Better to have the information before you pull over a dangerous person than to find out later. Radio traffic is monitored, so using their computers (yes, I'm sure some folks out there can hack into it, but I wouldn't with the anti-terrorism laws) is better and safer for them. If you are going to ask someone to die for you, you can't nitpick about how they do it. Just my thoughts. I can see the OPs point, but I don't agree.
  4. Yes, it does, in the line of duty. They can do whatever they need to as long as they come when I call. Same with the military. Keep me safe.
  5. Haha. Heartless. I know I'm easily irritated, but I also have a short memory and attention span so I forget I'm PO'd.
  6. I think it's an equipment thing. Electromagnetic spectrum bandwidths that can only be accessed if you have the right reciever/transponder maybe? Ever been to the Vegas airport? The super high fence with razorwire and white, unmarked planes is for Area 51 transport. They are doing stuff out in that desert...
  7. Different bandwidth? I assume the computers in the LE cars have wireless connections. Data on registration and insurance changes too often for it to be uploaded daily and still be accurate.
  8. I hope he/she does snap on someone. I would love to read the thread about the crazy person who went ballistic over someone pulling their cart in the store one day. lol. I thing more venting should be done in person at the moment it happens. Then you have a funny story for your friends. What is your trivial issue? Besides cats peeing in your shoes... lol. I can't think of one at the moment.
  9. Serious question: Elwood, do you think it is a control issue? I can't for the life of me figure out why that would bother someone. (Cart pusher, btw.) That it bothers you enough to elicit a physical response is interesting. Does it bug you because they are doing it wrong or because they are misusing the cart? Is it because they are messing up the personal distance promoted by being behind the cart? Is it just out of the natural order? What is it exactly?
  10. There is really a lot to think about (or not, some people just vote "YES" because they are nice and "NO" because they are angry, without much further thought to the matter). I will have to weigh the pros and cons. I like some of the proposed spending and I think some of it should be tabled. I understand it has to be on the "wish list" to be a possibility, but the possibility for wastefulness has some of us worried. With our county history, you have to be more than a little concerned. I understand the burden will be strictly on homeowners if the SPLOST isn't renewed, but it is mostly o
  11. Just thought of something... You figured this for the 1%. We would have 3% going at once, or just the 1%? If it is 3%, you have to divide the amount we spend by 3 to get the real amount we would have to spend to equal/better the amount we would pay in millage for our homes... Can you please tell me when the other 2 SPLOSTS run their course? Because if you divide out the numbers, we might be better off paying the increased millage. Sorry, I am full of questions. I try to be an informed voter.
  12. That was an awesome post! Thanks, SG. That gives me something to really consider.
  13. Aww. I hope that isn't accurate. I have a 7 year old. The world needs more 7 year olds, not less.
  14. Just so you know, city improvements CAN BE INCLUDED IN SPLOSTS. "SPLOST can fund any capital outlay projects that are owned or operated by either the county, a qualified municipality in the county, a local authority in the county, or some combination thereof." I would rather use SPLOST money to pay off debt, not incur more debt. Before you say I am dangerous (and I am): "The retirement of previously incurred general obligation debt of the county or one or more qualified municipalities also may be described as a purpose for the imposition of SPLOST. The debt must be general obligati
  15. Let's be real about who really will pay for this. People on limited incomes (like welfare recipients) won't be buying as much or as often as others and often buy secondhand, not from a store or vendor. Do they even charge the 1% on food stamp or WIC purchases? Visitors? I'm not sure who you mean by this. Is there a big tourist industry of which I'm not aware in Paulding? Are you saying large numbers of Cobb and Douglas residents drive here to shop even though they have every store imaginable? Illegal immigrants? Paulding has a lower percentage of illegal immigrants than surroundi
  16. There isn't enough water pressure on my side of town for the hydrants to pump enough water to put out a house fire. They pretty much have to watch it burn.
  17. You people get your "government" all mixed up. The federal government pays for federal parks and recreation areas that can be used for a fee. The main point of these areas is to preserve the land, resources, history, and wildlife for future generations. If you have ever been to a federal park, you know you have to pay to use it. (As I remember, there are no ballfields in the Grand Canyon or rec league sports at Yellowstone.) State governments pay for state parks and recreation areas that are very similar to federal parks. Last time I went to one, I had to pay to get in the gate. Local
  18. I'm on the NO side now because this SPLOST includes a bunch of transportation projects but there may be another SPLOST added JUST for transportation in 2012 (a regional SPLOST): In 2012, residents in 15 counties — including Murray and Whitfield — will be able to vote on a regional 1 percent sales tax to pay for transportation improvements. The Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) is part of the statewide transportation plan signed into law earlier this month. Some local officials wonder how much support it will receive. “It’s getting very mixed reviews,” said Mike Babb,
  19. That guy gave away some of his piece of mind for this country. As a neighbor, you could at least let him know his kid is getting out of the house. What is DFACS going to do but stress him out more? If you tell him, he can install a lock on the door and discuss it with his wife. That is the decent thing to do. If that doesn't fix the situation, then report it as neglect. I guess it was OK for him to have a gun when we sent him overseas and not OK in his own yard. How messed up is that? I'd much rather see a trained marine with a gun than a drunk redneck, but that's just me. For the record,
  20. This was SHOCKING to me. Most schools districts have at least 1/3 of the student body eligible for free lunches. I bet if you compared this list to test scores you would see the correlation. Source: http://decal.ga.gov/documents/attachments/10FreeRedAllSchools.pdf (from the Summer Food program site in case you want to compare Paulding to other counties) FY 2010 Free and Reduced Lunch School Data GA Department of Education Version Hiram High School 39% Bessie L. Baggett Elementary 48% Lillian C. Poole Elementary School 47% South Paulding High School
  21. It is technically a WIC program (I read some of the literature). The not checking part bothers me. I don't qualify for WIC (unless they keep adding furlough days, then I might) but I can send my kids to eat for free? I understand the "serving stations" (which include the Boys and Girls Club in Paulding and a church in Hiram) are located in areas with at least 50% population being served free school lunches, I just don't know why they don't have a qualification process. To me that says this program is taking funds from WIC/Food Stamps programs and redistributing to everybody (including the
  22. Not true, I read the USDA's information on the school lunch programs. At the outside, 30% fat from calories is healthy, most school lunches are at least 38% fat from calories AS OFFERED, most kids don't eat the healthy part. School lunches are VERY HIGH in fat, including the pizza. The information I got was from this year with USDA approved school lunch pizza (they bought school lunches and tested them). USDA information on school lunches says there is a problem with the high sodium content. They haven't fixed that yet outside of offering healthier choices to go along with the entrees. The
  23. Read my signature regarding statistics. They have very little to do with reality. Statistics say half the children in these schools are hungry and don't account for hungry children who live a street over in a different district. I think this program discriminates against children in other parts of the county. Of course, they can just drive on over and eat (nobody will check) then mom can afford the extra value meal at McDonald's. lol. (I am on a McDonald's kick because mine is shut down and I haven't had a french fry in two months.)
