I'd say that it would be preposterous if it happened in the USA and some local antiquated ordinance allows it. I think that the fact that this happened in Austria makes it only a curiosity and not real fodder for a discussion that pertains to any of us here. Sovereignty means that other countries make and enforce laws as they see fit. While REAL human rights violations regarding human trafficking and dismemberment and "ethnic cleansing" [there's a euphemism for ya!] still exist in much of the world, I just can't see ginning up a lot of outrage over another country not prosecuting this minor as

Pithy post, Pubby! It's an interesting notion, that a social universe can be the result of creation by a higher power [whoever controls limited information] in a sort of de-evolution of ideas. We'll call it, "devil-ution" or "unintelligent design".

It's only natural that where there are does, bucks will come around to chase them. That observation is for hunters, nature enthusiasts -- and parents of teen-age girls.

Love their food, hate their commercials!

About the Zaxby's commercial, the girl says, "It's Clay Mathews!" His response is the super-eloquent, "Hey" - Not, "What are you doing in the dressing room wearing a football practice uniform and hitting me on the backside? " Then there's the certain health code violation of serving food in a LOCKER ROOM. It's the only locker room I've ever seen with a round cafe-style, two-person pedestal table, specially designed for those intimate dining experiences enhanced by the smell of men's sweaty athletic attire. -
The Industrial Military Complex is not to be messed with. They'll do what is necessary to bring the GOP in line. Anybody indicating anything else is posturing, BSing, or a mixture of the two.

Yeah - Mitt got his butt kicked in the context of a Presidential race. See, the popular vote doesn't really matter, except statewide where it determines the electoral vote. The difference was about 3 million votes, which seems like a lot of folks to me! But like I said, the electoral vote is all that counts in a Presidential election, so it's 332 - 206, if I recall correctly. That's a Presidential butt-whooping, no doubt. Regarding the stock market, there are a number of individual plays that might be interesting, given the dynamics of a second term. I'll do some research.

There is really good reason that Ayn Rand's Objectivism model never caught on. In the first place, it goes against what the founders had in mind for our country! They never used the term "capitalism", but they did describe the purpose of our government in the Preamble. It says, "to Form a more Perfect Union" and "to promote the general welfare". These goals are at odds with Ayn Rand's ideology, which says that altruism (caring for the welfare of others) is the ultimate evil, while the accumulation of wealth is the ultimate good. It is the wealthy person, not the soldier or the teacher or

Thoughts -- ANYTHING is better than the reality shows on TV! -
I think that DGITW made an excellent suggestion, to get him professional help to deal with his OCD (or some other such disorder).

I think that it's time for out of the box thinking. I suggest joining him in his activity to see what is motivating him to obsess in this way. If creation is his passion, then you may want to compromise with him by adding stipulations that will slow down the printing part of the creation process. What you want is for him to not be printing so much, right? Or do you want him to give up all of this fanciful action-figure stuff? He needs a way to have his own stuff, don't you think? How can you motivate him to have his own stuff and to take care of it so that he can have his special time to crea

George Carlin did an excellent bit on rights. He said that all rights are imaginary and that anyone who disputes that claim should do a search of "Japanese American Internment Camps". A long time ago people found that saying "It (whatever 'it' is) came from god" is a lot more powerful than saying that some guy just made up a list of stuff that people should do/not do. The same thing applies to rights. If someone can get others to buy the story of a supernatural being getting mixed up in petty human conflicts and taking sides, one against the other, then you have people who will buy the story

Yes, I'm interested in ZC's opinion, in her words. She said that SHE saw more problems than advantages.

How can you say that only christians have "inner peace"? It's been my experience that the MOST conflicted, paranoid, and judgmental humans on this earth are religious types. This includes christians, but is not limited to them. Inner peace means coming to terms with your humanity and mortality and it has nothing to do with intervention from a "supernatural realm". Regarding "praying for others", do what you need to do to feel good about yourself. If that helps, then great - just keep it to yourself. The problem with christianity is that people use it to apply to other people when they should

Hot is irrelevant. Packages can be misleading. And reality TV isn't -- Real. -
How could it possibly be any of your business when people you DON'T KNOW fall in love and wish to marry? Do you realize how invasive your position is? You're saying to the gay man or the gay woman -- "Your personal relationships, the person you fall in love with and hope to marry and be forever-happy with that person -- I have some disagreements with YOUR choices to the point that I think that MY choices should trump YOUR choices of the person you want to marry. So you'll just need to not pursue your hopes and dreams anymore."

the boycott thing doesn't seem to be working
eym_sirius replied to Coppertop's Pop's topic in RECENT TOPICS
Boycotts usually are not successful as an economic disincentive. They tend to make political staements which would only embarass people or enterprises with a sensibility for others, as opposed to ones self. Marriage is a state sponsored institution regarding legality. Marriage is a church affiliated institution only if the couple wishes to affiliate themselves with a particular religious brand. IN THAT CONTEXT, people making statements about disallowing gays to marry should be done in the context of the couple's relationship to the church brand. -
Why do you want to marry your brother or your dad? Do you not have a preference? If so, then why? If not, then why not? I think that if you truly want to marry your dad OR you brother (assuming that they are not the same person), then make your case for it!!!!

It seems to me that the state has no real interest in determining the relationships that consenting adults have with each other. If you disagree, then please QUALIFY your position by explaining how it's any business of the state in determining the degree to which consenting adults can associate.

My new 9mm wasn't expensive at all (Maybe $160)! The holster that I got for it was less than $10.00. It came with a pouch for an extra clip (I guess they probably all do). The only drawback for me is that it's heavier than I thought that it would be. But it shoots fine.

Horrible People! Terrible People! Westboro Baptist Church -

Definitely they have the right to do speak. While I think that it's appropriate for some to turn a "deaf ear" to them, it's also appropriate to be aware of the theology/ideology/mental illness that is behind the WBC bunch. Some people believe in absolute rights. I don't. I think that all rights have potential limitations. In the case of speech, a person can cause irrepairable harm by vocally harrassing another person with day after day verbal attacks. In cases like this, he , the verbal assailant, can be subject to a restraining order and possibly civil penalties for damages. I think that -

That's not it, Mr. Dis. WBC believes that god sends his judgment through his messengers. So all of these spree killers and the killers of American troops are reigning down "god's justice" for our lack of christian (according to WBC) morality, which emphasized acceptance of same-sex relationships being the main reason for "god's wrath" on our soldiers and our society. Those fighting abroad for "the American way of life" are, to the WBC, fighting for its immorality, therefore subject to god's messengers of wrath and tvengeance. On a related note there's some awful terrible things that come o
