Not very happy with the discussion of gun control
eym_sirius replied to LPPT's topic in RECENT TOPICS
It's a way of diverting the conversation from substance to hair-splitting. If people are arguing terminology, their not talking about solutions to a real societal problem, which won't be resolved by silly diversions. But that's pretty much the point, isn't it? -

But -- you had just said that there's no such thing as an "assault weapon"! First you say that there's no such thing. Then you say that they are EVERYWHERE! I guess what you're saying is that when people use the term, you're incapable of discerning a mental image of the type of weapon being described. You may want to familiarize yourself with the weapons associated with the term, so that you'll know what kind of weapon that you'll soon be not allowed to purchase without a firearms dealer;s license. -
I agree completely, LPPT. It's important to find out what other people really believe about our government and what they consider to be the way things ought to be. I'm constantly amazed at how poorly educated people are, regarding the way that our government works and the way that it is supposed to work! About discussions -- I already know what I think, so that's why I'm interested in other points of view.

Thanks for sharing this story, LPPT! Really interesting, though the social/political dynamics of today are much different from those nearly a hundred years ago! Back then, there were lynchings where not only were there no people brought to justice - there would not even be an investigation sometimes! Call it big government or whatever, but today, the government could put down any uprising, not that such an uprising today would ever come about. I contend that the situation is SO different today -- These people talking stuff about taking up arms fall into two categories: The mentally ill an

Nobody is taking away our ability to protect our lives with guns. The Second Amendment guarantees that. Because some rabble is more easily roused than others, it should be considered irresponsible to engage in loose talk about gun-confiscation scenarios. It's just not going to happen and the weak-minded are just going to go out and buy guns. They do it every time! So WHO do you think starts these rumors of mass gun confiscations??? Exactly! Those who sell guns! Rabble are so easily manipulated into knee-jerk reactions. I'm a gun carrier. Nobody's taking my sidearm. Nobody's taking my h

The Japanese-American refererence is idiotic. First -- Japanese-Americans owned guns! The picture-commentary seems indicate that if they had been armed, then they would have not been put in camps. It might be worthy to note that if you shoot at our government enforcement personnel -- You're going to die or you're going to jail for the rest of your life. And what is the name of the principle on which people would be willing to die or to go to jail for life?

Not very happy with the discussion of gun control

All that one has to do to verify the information is to do a search for it. Upon receiving evidence that the ultraconservatives are spreading lies, the meme-infected neanderthals CHOOSE to ignore the facts and continue to repeat untrue versions rather than to seek out what is real and true. It's because the lies support the narrative that the meme-infected neanderthals want to be true. Regarding the "long gun" issue, there's a video of the gun being pulled out of the trunk. It's CLEARLY NOT an AR-15! The coroner CLEARLY stated that all of the children were killed by the LONG GUN found at the -

The amount of willful ignorance on behalf of the ultraconservative movement (declining, as it is) is astounding! It shows how much of a willing host these people are to the misinformation viruses spread intentionally by the TEA PARTY MEME-MACHINE. -
What an embarassment Phil Gingrey is, to himself, his party, and to the State of Georgia! Is it better for Gingrey to say these utterly stupid things, or to keep his mouth shut? I think that, just in the case of Todd Akin, it's better that Phil Gingrey reveals himself and the ultra-conservative wing of the party as out-of-touch and irrelevant. This "legit rape" meme seems to be the prevailing opinion of the ultraconservatives. He doesn't need to be in the House of Representatives after this term and it's a blessing that he is no longer a practicing physician!

You don't actually HAVE the rights that you're claiming. The second amendment allows you to carry a weapon. You can do that. It doesn't say that you can carry ANY weapon. The standard in the judicial process is one of REASONABLENESS. When it comes to "The General Welfare" (see Preamble to the Constitution), where can a reasonable balance be struck when it comes to public safety (See "Sandy Hook", "Columbine", "Aurora" etc) ? Does anyone need a 30 shot magazine to protect his home? Of course not! 30 shot magazines have no application for hunting. Remember that when someone makes the ca

Georgia Town Ordering Gun Ownership Undaunted by Massacre
eym_sirius replied to barrycdog's topic in RECENT TOPICS
Kennesaw (the city, not the postal address) is not very big and there has not been much said about the requirement to own a gun by homeowners. No reminders, no instructions, no commercials - nothing. It's not a barrier to crime because likely, 18 - 30 year olds (statistically most likely to commit violent crimes) have never heard of the so-called requirement. Just think -- If YOU were in that category (18-30) where would YOU have heard about the "law"??? -
Actually, NOT allowing convicted felons to possess guns works well, generally. Not allowing future purchases of "Bushmaster" assault-styled rifles doesn't "hinder law abiding citizens". Requiring registration of all assault-styled weapons already in circulation doesn't hurt anyone. Keeping magazine capacity at fewer than 30 doesn't impair the ability of a homeowner to protect himself and his family. Nobody hunts with these weapons so if you don't need them for hunting or home safety -- then what??? The safety of the public comes WAY before the desire of an insecure middle-aged white guy f

Oil prices rise ahead of US fiscal-cliff talks
eym_sirius replied to barrycdog's topic in RECENT TOPICS
The PROBLEM is not simply raising taxes/not raising taxes on the millionaires/billionaires. But it IS an issue and the Republicans have made it a defining issue. They are the ones who have drawn a line at NO TAX INCREASE for anyone but, possibly, the poor. However, faced with the opportunity of having a tax increase ONLY for the top tier wage-earners (of a few percentage points) and tax breaks for everybody else, the GOP says, NO! I totally disagree that the mainstream media has been too one-sided. It has been portrayed that way by quasi-news outlets like Fox News, which is simply a pr -

I agree about the technical difference between a clip and a magazine*. However, when a term becomes the common vernacular, as "clip" is, I use it(clip) to describe the magazine, because people won't know what I'm talking about if I say, "magazine". *one uses a clip to load a magazine, in certain weapons. It's a loading tool.

Okay - I had just read a bunch of names being recommended repeatedly that aren't American made. My 9mm is Hi-Point. It's reliable and inexpensive and Made in the USA. I find it kind of humorous that some people feel the need to mention their "clip size". It's kind of like compensating with a "Bushmaster".

In all of this - Whatever happened to discussions of "American Made"?

What Can We As a Society Do About These Horrible Tragedies?
eym_sirius replied to Beach Bum's topic in RECENT TOPICS
Firearms are, by nature, weapons designed to assault others. The appearance of a weapon does not necessarily correspond with its function. Automatic weapons are already banned for general use and ownership. (an automatic weapon means that on a single trigger pull, bullets come out of the weapon until the trigger is no longer depressed.) That being the case - What weapons, precisely should be banned for those who are advocating banning certain weapons? Would that have precluded the ability of the shooter in the CT case, from killing all of those children and several adults? How about A -
It just means that you care, LPPT! Unfortunately, we're at the age where friends and family members are no longer here with us. This rush of emotion has to do with that loss, compounded by the ability to forsee and contemplate what the future holds. When you add recollections of fond memories from long ago -- It's only natural to be emotional when they all come together. So we mourn all of those people dear to us in our past, including the person that WE used to be. We're so very thankful for those here in the present and a bit anxious about future holidays. That makes THIS holiday seas

Happy Birthday, LPPT! I know it's tomorrow, but I may not have the opportunity to come around and post birthday wishes to you then. The world is a better place for having you in it and even though we never get to see each other any more, it seems, don't think that you're forgotten! I hope that you have the greatest birthday ever! Great people deserve great things! E_S

group essay on unpopularity and that guy (changed)

The Street Preacher In the public arena, you encounter all kinds of folks. If you happen by a street preacher - do you shout him down and denounce his end of times theology as heretical? Or do you just ignore him and continue on about your business? If the street preacher points at you and says, "sinner, will you confess today?" -- I'd say, "no thanks!" and keep moving at a faster clip. Any additional comments would deepen my relationship to someone with whom I'm not interested in investing myself. The street preacher might want to make it personal, which is exactly why I have no in -

THESE aren't leggins - They're panty hose, if ANYTHING. And I think it's a guy. Or it's a photoshopped picture and it's a half-guy and half-girl. That's different from a girl that's half guy. I think. Leggins are okay in a casual setting. Really casual.
