  1. Platforms are being shut down and the offloading of ships has halted in the port of New Orleans and elsewhere in the path of TD 13, soon expected to become TS Lee. Wholesale gasoline prices at the port have already risen on the news that delivery may be impacted, and as we all know retail prices should immediately follow the upward trend. No long term delivery problems like those of past major storms are anticipated, although the area could see up to 20" of rain.
  2. I'm usually not a big defender of the EPA, and Lisa Jackson has taken complete leave of her senses, but Ethanol was a political decision, not a bureaucratic one. If fact it was the Bush EPA that pointed out that ethanol is a zero sum game at best when it comes to carbon. This has not been disputed by the current EPA, because the numbers speak for themselves. The fact is that this is crony capitalism at it's very worst. The price of everything from food to fuel mileage, to automobile repairs has gone up due to this program, and we don't have an ounce of carbon, mercury, or sulfur to show fo
  3. The New Mexico SP confirm that this did happen, and that the patrolman, a one time patrolman of the year, is on administrative leave. The camera is located at a remote state owned facility. They say that the woman was not involved in any of his cases, and there will be no criminal charges. However, he could be dismissed for "tarnishing the badge" and bringing discredit to the department. Wouldn't it be great if we could fire politicians for that?
  4. There was certainly an expansion of the questionable financing methods from the redlined communities to the general population and that is most certainly the banks themselves. No argument here. But there was a lot going on that encouraged this, some of it was indeed the government making it easy to package and sell these loans and the FED holding interest rates artificially low helping create the asset bubble in the housing market. Once initiated, asset bubbles feed on themselves in a psychological game of Russian Roulette. If you remember the Ferarri madness of the 90's, that was the housi
  5. The CRA provided a mandate and a carrot and stick approach to lending in poor areas where as a matter of course, borrowers were less qualified to borrow. The intent of the program was honorable, but as we have seen, there is a reason why banks have lending guidelines. It really wasn't until Bill Clinton's administration used the threat of pulling or charging more for FDIC backing from institutions who failed to meet certain CRA quotas that the idea of bundling high risk mortgages with lower risk mortgages really took off. Fannie and Freddy did buy many of these mortgages, not all, but enough
  6. "According to everything she is reading this is normal."
  7. US Non-farm payroll was unchanged in August, in what is perhaps the weakest jobs report since September of last year. Payroll counts in June and July were also revised substantially downward. The number of persons employed part time for economic reasons rose from 8.4 million to 8.8 million in August. About 2.6 million persons were marginally attached to the labor force in August, up from 2.4 million a year earlier. These were the people who were not listed as in the labor force, but were available for work and had looked for work in the last 12 months, but had not looked in the last 4 wee
  8. I just want to know how to get my wife to take the can to the street.
  9. We did this last year. There really is no such thing as a "digital" antenna. The digital TV signal is broadcast on the UHF Frequency. Buy yourself a good UHF antenna such as the Channel Master CM-4228 eight bay antenna. Depending upon where you are, you will probably need a signal amplifier also. You can go to Antennaweb and enter your address to see what channels you will get.
  10. Catfish Den has seriously improved since Johnny took it over. I didn't even realize that he had bought it until I saw his mama at the register.
  11. Did you consider the auto discount you get if you have your homeowners with them? That might make the difference, and the customer service with USAA is in a completely different league from Allstate. Allstate, 51% Very Unsatisfied USAA 51% Extremely Satisfied
  12. As if the economy needed any more bad news lately, the Second Quarter 2011 GDP growth number was revised downward from 1.3% to 1%. This reinforces the view that the economy is in a very fragile state. First-quarter growth was an even worse 0.4% In other news, orders for core capital goods, a measure of orders for durables such as equipment that disregards the volatile transportation and defense markets, dropped by 1.5%. The Richmond Fed Manufacturing Index, a measure of economic activity in the Middle Atlantic Region, dropped to -10, showing great slowing, and the worst level since June
  13. Yes. Ours went up slightly. Everyone should keep in mind that the current " assessed value" of your house has nothing to do with the "replacement value" or what it would cost to build that house today. It will cost significantly more to rebuild your house than what your tax bill says it is worth. Building costs have risen slightly over the last four years while property values have plummeted. It's always good to have a review done by your insurance company every few years. USAA actually sent an appraiser out to our house this spring. The main reason for the increase in price is the st
  14. HHS, that has been my experience also. If a person practices the good values normally associated with a truly "Christian" lifestyle, there is no need to plaster their advertising with symbols. It is in the same vein of "Me thinks he protesteth too much". Their actions and their history are their reputation, not a fish symbol on a magnetic sign on a 20 year old pick-up truck, or on a business card next to a P.O. Box and cell phone number.
  15. Try Gold and Coin Exchange on US 41 in Marietta between Canton Rd and Bells Ferry. They are usually very competitive.
  16. While neither Bush nor Obama were or are serious about stopping the flow of illegals into the country, there is a huge difference in the two. Bush tried to institute amnesty through the Congress, and failing that, he moved on to other problems. In the meantime, Congress passed an immigration reform bill that was the opposite of what Bush wanted, in that it sought to enhance border security, but he signed it anyway. That bill was ineffective because of it's reliance on technology instead of human intervention, but at least it was an effort by Congress, admittedly a poor one, to tackle the probl
  17. Is there some part of "control the border first" that is hard to understand? It is right there in the constitution that this is a responsibility of the Federal Government. What we are doing is indeed ineffective, but Obama's answer is to give yup and make Democratic voters out of each and every one of them. We have 24,000 troops right now sealing the border between North and South Korea. I wonder what would happen if they did that here instead?
  18. I don't know the situation at this particular house, and I'm not speculating, but a pool needs to be protected. Paulding is one of the few jurisdictions that does not require a fence around an above ground pool. If a pool has a 5 ft fence and locked gates, a child is far less likely to end up in this situation. A swimming pool is like candy to a two year old.
  19. It's one backed by SCOTUS. In United States v. Brignoni-Ponce, the court ruled that the likelihood that any given person of Mexican ancestry is an alien is high enough to make Mexican appearance a relevant factor in areas where there are a high number of illegal aliens of Mexican ancestry. In Whren v. United States, the Supreme court also found that an officer may make a traffic stop even if that traffic stop may not have been made absent an alternative law enforcement objective. In this straightforward case the original offense was careless driving, an observable offense, and upon investig
  20. ......"but earnings slow" reads the rest of your headline in the article. For Christ sake lets hope that fewer banks are on the watch list by now. 865 banks still in trouble is certainly nothing to crow about. Still, the magnitude of problem banks — roughly one of every nine lenders — remains relatively high. And the number could rise again if the economy suffered another downturn, a prospect that seems increasingly likely amid all the grim data that has surfaced in the weeks since the list was compiled at the end of the June. -Wall Street Journal; August 23, 2011
  21. Do y'all think it a coincidence that DC could be hit with an earthquake and a hurricane in the same week?
  22. They say now that the National Cathedral was damaged as well as slight damage to the Pentagon. All monuments are closed for inspection, and a Nuclear plant near the epicenter shut down automatically without incident and is functioning as designed in such a situation. Also of interest is that Colorado suffered the largest quake there in 40 years. a 5.3.
