  1. Blame it on my mathematics education and set theory. The universe of my advertisers is local. The universe of Google's advertisers are international with databases that will parse you and predict when you are going to need viagra and send you 30,000 spam emails to you on that date. pubby
  2. A good portion of the logon problems, etc. are because of cookie problems. The deal is that if you were on the old board and came to the new board, ou were already signed on ... why? Because the old cookies signed you in. The point is the cookies set by the two boards - they are entirely separate servers in different parts of Atlanta - get confused and cause problems some of the time. The best idea is to clear all the cookies set by the board (click below on delete my cookies) and then sign on again, remembering to include the optional forums (ON is the password.) That wi
  3. Before you write it off completely, one of the reasons I upgraded was because it actually does provide more features/compatability with some different display options for mobile computing/phone stuff than the old version. We've not yet gotten that far along with the development in that area but it is on the list. pubby
  4. Yes, there are three. google analytics, quantcast and my own adserver that captures nothing but whether you click or not. None of these collect any critical information about any individual here. Rather they help us tell the story of pcom to advertisers who are universally local and are more interested because they know that you come from the Dallas, Hiram or PowderSprings node. Whoopie doo. You turn it off and you can click on a banner and visit a place and no one will ever know you came from pcom ... that ought to hurt pubby ... good Truly the 'trackers' here serve the pu
  5. Harlee: That is not true (you can't talk about commerce members). I wouldn't 'attack' a commerce member nor would I post about a low score in a topic generally lauding the business (rain on their parade.) But here in this topic, I would think that the public record is to be discussed. The difference is between being rude and provocative. If everyone is saying that they just love the food at XYZ ... it is rude to say ... but they scored only a 44 on the health dept. any of you get sick with all that wonderful tasting food? If on the other hand, you see a store with scores o
  6. We sum it up as News, information and social networking. We are a news site. We are site where you can get information and we most certainly are a social networking site. we use message board software as a CMS to accomplish those three missions and hopefully, help the community come together for the ultimate benefit of all. pubby
  7. For those worried about not being able to log out or who can't find the 'delete my cookies' button ... it used to be only on the main forum page but in this latest version it is at the bottom of each and every page. they even provided folks with a 'back to the top' link. pubby
  8. I've never used MS publisher. These days I used open office for word processing and because I never was one to like the restraints (and sameness) involved with template based programs like Publisher. Couple that with the flexibility as well as page-publishing tools available in Corel Draw - which I first got back with version 3 in 1992 - well, I've had probably six of the 11 versions including a copy of X4. The corel suite just does it all ... including what Publisher does ... Heck, you could even make your own true-type fonts with Corel Draw. (and it costs about the same at dis
  9. http://dallas2.paulding.com/forum/index.php?/topic/29240-an-easy-way-to-downsize-your-pictures/ the above link from Voices in my Head talks about an image resizer widget offered by Microsoft for XP that installs in windows explorer. I have it on my computer and it will downsize a whole folder in a matter of seconds. pubby
  10. If they have an up-to-date browser, they can hit the control key (usually lower left) and the "-" key and it will 'shrink' the site and banners in 25 percent increments. To reverse that, hit control and "+" and it will get bigger. You can actually adjust your browser this way to get the optimum viewing experience. pubby PS: I know this works on Firefox and IE 8. I've not tried it on Chrome and I don't have opera. pubby
  11. Behind that door was Angelo Batista, the Godfather for all Sicily. It was also Mr. Brownstone's destination this day. He felt for his envelope and instinctively touched his wallet to confirm its presence as he literally skipped up the stair and rang the bell.
  12. thanks for the kudoos but you are leaving out some key names ... specifically C_Watkins and Elwood. Chris, whom most who visited the development board and early moments on this one know, was the actual head wizard behind the curtain adjusting things at the base level of the computer. Elwood, on the other hand, stepped up to the plate and the Halloween skin was his homer ... Of course I had to screw up the header with the screaming cat for halloween proper but I hope you'll forgive me. But really, those folks deserve as much if not more credit for the smooth crossover than I - ab
  13. Just a little update: We found an error in our coding of colorful premium member names that caused users of IE 8 and probably IE 7 and AOL to display enormous amounts of white space. This was due to an 'unclosed' tag. As an aside, the percentage of users logging on Pcom with IE declined about 10 percent. Firefox, which showed a 7 percent increase and Google Chrome, with about a 3 percent increase were the beneficiaries of the coding error:) There are a few other issues that remain including custom media/bbcodes for ustream video, inclusion of the flash player and clearing up th
  14. CC: I got the ustream code to post. I would recommend not using the rich text editor (the plain text option in your controls) and the full editor*. (*Remember to select options in the full text editor and do a preview on the post with either the raw text or line feed editor.) Oh, and it appears if you click on the big play button it takes you to ustream ... whereas if you click the player piece on the play bar (lower left) it leaves you here and plays in place. pubby
  15. It was a short trip to the bank. Just two short blocks. When he entered, the officer in the corner smiled and tipped his cap. Brownstone smiled back as he headed for the vault ... the vault where the safe deposit boxes were kept. He put his hand into the watch pocket of his well worn brown corduroy jeans. His key was there.
  16. Hummmm ... This is a cookie problem and it is one that may involve the old board and the new one. I think that if you go to the bottom of this page - it is at the bottom of every page - and click on clear cookies by this board it should be good. Then see if you can log out. pubby
  17. For the first little bit it looked like things were going to go really smoothly. We'd done a lot of planning and testing and while we're aware of the problem with flash in the posts and signatures and the heralded media tag ... the problems with aol and IE baffled me. I think the last version of the software used a different routine which may have automatically closed the color tags and with the update, the file was written and not closed. Didn't cause a problem for posts from members with the standard black name tag... but the colored names ... oooh ... And then figuring it out ...
  18. I'm not receiving any email to publisher@paulding.com ... this is in large part because we changed servers completely ... and the change has a few loose ends. Getting the board up and running something close to right was the first priority. Email is high on the list of priorities. pubby
  19. Kind of jumped the gun a bit announcing the fix was 'in' ... it was for all the premium colored names but the most populous ... member plus + ... Yep, I failed to put the code in the suffix when I went in to edit the bunch of them. Anytime any premium member with a name that appeared in a color other than black posted, it would break the frame and that resulted in tons of white space. Hopefully now it is resolved. pubby
  20. I had fixed the unclosed code in all the premium memberships but "Member plus+" ... wouldn't you know. Yep, came in this topic and saw that the problem remained, saw that Austin Plantation is a members plus member and said, Ooops .. I bet that was the reason for the other reported errors. Hopefully, I haven't missed any more, he said, wiping gooey egg yolk from his face. pubby
  21. I think it may be fixed but you're browser is still getting stuff from the cache. I saw that because I was having the big white space issue you reported in my IE8 ... and now it is long-gone - fixed. pubby
  22. Go ahead and try CC: I got your back. pubby
  23. Upgrades are always fraught with niggling little things that come across like game-changing horrific, destructive problems. Yep, we had one here caused by colored membership names and the parsing of topics that seem to be missing this code: ... yep, IE takes that missing code seriously in the new board whereas it didn't make any difference with the old board. FF worked right through it and others browsers seemed unfazed. Bottom line, it should be fixed. Blame me for not catching it sooner but ... and you're going to love this ... I did a search a day or two ago on the IPB boar
  24. Yes, this seems to be a problem involving any post by certain paid members who use IE 8. It has to be a bug in the programming. the best solution is to us Firefox as the browser as this doesn't crop up in that. Alternately, (and I'm using IE 8 as I post this) is to use the lofi version. Not very colorful but it doesn't generate the miles of white space. I'm on to IPB to report the bug. pubby
  25. Actually, we're not behind at all. The Dept. of Health is a state agency and as such is managed from Atlanta. The county does run the web site and frankly, the county has done comparatively well in comparison with others in terms of data and information being migrated to the web. This is fitting considering the youthful age of the county. That said state and local governments are in tough times these days financially. Unable to go in the red constitutionally (like the FEDS); they have to do things like lay folks off, cut operating hours, etc. Given the county provides the web
