  2. I personally tend to agree with the judge regarding the bare fact of guilt or innocence. I would also say that during the trial phase, I wouldn't want those images of the defendant with the explicatives, etc. glaring at me in the gallery, in the newspaper or on the bench. That the guy and his lawyer want them covered, however, is the issue. I would think that since we're paying for his defense, he could do with a little covergirl bottles and let the defense attorney's secretary ... or the defense attorney put the cover base (whatever it is called) on the guys face. If he looks a little

  4. I believe you can go pro se on this, in fact I know you can - although it is kind of not like playing the game and it is shame to lose on a technicality. Second, yes, there is a rich record of filings against the county for valuation of property including some cases (like the Atlanta airport property case) that went as far as the Georgia Supreme Court. All those records, going by years and decades are at the courthouse. You'll need to block off a week or more to review those filings to find one that was: 1. successful and 2. most resembles your current situation. the argument is th
  5. I'm sure there are many people who don't have a problem with visibility ... Can I ask, do you drive a low-to-the-ground vehicle like a Camaro or Mustang or do you drive a SUV or minivan that typically provide a more commanding view of the road? We're talking subtly here and even an inch or two increase in the height of the sight line can make a tremendous difference. Unionmom: I agree, driver error is responsible for a lot of accidents but the main point about that is that people are always going to make errors. It sucks but that is the truth and losing a loved one to such an error in
  6. Actually, I've driven in Europe and traffic circles handle amazingly complex intersections with aplomb. The only reason I wouldn't recommend one is because the average American driver is just not accustomed enough to them to know how to navigate them ... but if we had a history of having traffic circles ... if they were more common, that would be a reasonable alternative as it would slow the traffic and eliminate a light in the meantime. pubby
  7. It not quite that easy for me to blame it on the inattentive driver making a left at that intersection in large part because the driver coming north on Bill Carruth - despite coming up a hill - could be going 50-60 mph or faster. That means that when the guy coming to make a left turn is looking down the road 500 feet to the intersection, he sees nothing. The guy turning also will typically look a the light, the situation with stopped cars on the left and right and then decides whether to make the turn at 20-25 mph or slow even further. I think possibly the 'error' in design is that wh
  8. You might make the observation that all accidents are driver caused UGAdawgs ... but the plain fact is that sometimes even some subtle re-engineering of an intersection ... putting in speed ripples like you do before a four way stop ... or something else to jolt drivers to attention (flashing lights) could have a positive effect. The problem there, frankly, is that the sight lines are deceiving in some subtle way. I know that visually that intersection just seems weird what with Bill Carruth disappearing above almost appears to be a dead-end at a T intersection. I suspect a good numbe
  9. I have an opinion on this and while I too hope the young man is okay, I am stunned at the idea that Dallas is not big enough for a large crowd of people. I figure if we were working for a world record, we could probably get about 500,000 people in that area. When you've got a football game like GA-GA Tech or a world series game at the Ted, the roads are congested and I'm sure, many more people have been hit by cars as 100,000 people, more or less, crowd into an area about the size of the Georgia Dome which is considerably smaller the size of downtown Dallas from the Regions Bank to Curls
  10. Ken: I understand and do empathize with both he and his family. I simply thought that the GOP leadership, which knew all this anyway (the ethics issues) and stood behind him would continue to do so. I mean the only thing that really changed was that the public became acutely aware. I.e. it really didn't seem to me that he had done anything other than become depressed and had an episode of bad judgment (the suicide attempt and the actions surrounding that.) Heck, I figured if they'd back him through the affair and divorce, they would not have the gumption to kick him out because of

  12. This is great news Nemie. If I could run pcom from England I'd come visit and maybe stay ... well not stay ... I'm an 'merican ... but I must say that when I was in college I was an Anglophile ... even had a '69 sunbeam GT (arrow chassis) Why do the French call England "Angleterre?" Because it is kind of like a triangle of earth pubby
  13. The story itself is interesting and it does pose a mystery. I find it possible (but not probable) that the bullets were tucked into the pant pocket of a new pair of pants at a local story. Because bullets - and I'm assuming something on the order of 22 caliber cartridges with powder - are a piece of ordinance and can be taken apart and the gun powder retrieved, I think that the source should be determined. And because of the probability of them not being placed in the pant pocket at the store prior to purchase, I think I would have determined the character of my child. I wou

  16. We all know that Speaker Glenn Richardson is in the crisis of his life. After an abortive attempt to take his own life in mid November, his ex-wife Susan dropped a bombshell of an interview that left no doubt as to Richardson's infidelity with a lobbyist. Most folks don't believe the situation is resolved and there is some question as to its outcome. The above poll relates to some of the possible outcomes. Vote you opinion of how this will all play out. pubby
  17. I'd close it if he'd come on PCOM TV and answer phone-in questions from his constituents I know we have some conservative mods but I think they know that if this is one is to be shut down, I'll have to do the shutting. I think the variety of responses and the change in tone since Susan Richardson spoke is quite interesting. I may be wrong but my gut is that Glenn Richardson is not going to resign. He will try to ride it out and if he can finagle delays - easy during the holiday season - and get into the session, he'll probably make it through the session. He may well succe
  18. Ken, I take it you are referencing this citation from the AJC update: Section 28-1-6.1 of the Georgia code of laws is titled “Method for determining permanent disability of Speaker of the House of Representatives.” It says: Ken: One thing you got to remember is that Richardson, as the head cheese, knows a lot of other folks secrets. Now if he were in a mental hospital rocking back and forth, back and forth, I could see the GOP caucus invoking this ... and making it stick. But I don't think that anyone thinks of Glenn Richardson as permanently mentally disabled.
  19. He's not fallen .... yet ... and he may not. The post of speaker is voted on every two years and the vote was last year. For him to leave the post, he must either resign from the post himself or be indicted by a grand jury for a crime. There, no doubt, are efforts to force him to resign just as there are pressures on the local DA and the states' Attorney General to find something to indict him on. Barring one of those eventualities, he will remain speaker through this session, Dale Russell and the Atlanta media not with standing. And do know that with the state's budget

  22. Surepip: that is your opinion. But you have to know that the actuality of Richardson's relationship with the lobbyist woman was well known. Indeed, the ethics committee could have subpoenaed the lobbyist lady, could have supboenaed Susan Richardson and could have, if they chose, investigated the whole thing deeper and in a more timely manner. They chose not to do so. Why? Was it the power of Georgia Speaker is great enough to influence the ethics committee? What you're forgetting is that any of these types of things will require that these investigations go forward as o

  24. So you can vote for a post that you think is great and vote against a post that you think is silly and/or worse. If you adjust the view, you can have those posts by those who tend to be on the silly side hidden. I don't recommend hiding the posts but I think it is a good tool that, over time, will provide members a benefit. pubby
  25. No, these +/- post ratings don't do that at all. However, if you look at the gray bar at the bottom of the post, you'll probably see it says, currently viewing all posts, change view? If you do, you can select the reputation of posters as a filter. I.e. if you don't want to see trash talkers whom have had their posts voted down a lot, it will not present their posts, but rather note they posted and if you want to see their comment, you have to click on it. pubby
