  1. We started the kids off with a debit card and their own account by 15 or 16. This gave us a few years to monitor and make sure they understood how to use it responsibly and for them to show us they WOULD be responsible. (These accounts were tied to ours at the Lockheed Credit Union and we could monitor them and tranfer money in ...or out at will.) At 18 or 19, I took my daughter to a small local bank that I do business with and asked if they would give her a VISA credit card with a $500 limit just for the purpose of establishing her own credit. She is in Athens and has needed that card a co
  2. me.......have done hundreds of returns but haven't finished mine
  3. Yup. I always compare the two when doing returns. When you do several hundred a year, you learn all the tricks.
  4. All the time. It's because the GA standard deduction is so low. If the state truly wanted to help the lower income people, they would raise the GA standard deduction to the same as the federal.
  5. You so funny Barbed Wire will probably be at her office midnight April 15th EFILING taxes!
  6. Bella, I see those kids too. I have spent a lot of time at my son's high school. What is sad is that for the most part, those kids who have had that kind of adversity won't get the cruises and cars and huge parties. Kids like mine (and yours?) who have had a stable home and all the support they could ever need to be successful get the "prizes". Again, I hope this comes out like I mean it--I am proud of my kids. They are caring, compassionate, intelligent, lovely people. And all three did well enough to qualify for at least the HOPE scholarship. But school was easy for all of them, They
  7. I do believe I saw a sign at the DALLAS post office that they would be open until midnight this year. I thought it was funny that now that most people file on line, they are finally going to stay open late.
  8. Points taken & appreciated. I didn't mean it to sound "crass". Let me see if I can better explain. First of all, I am the first person in my family to graduate from college--and on my Dad's side, the only one other than one much younger cousin. It sounds like some of your kids have really struggled and worked hard for a hs diploma. For mine, dropping out was NEVER an option. What else were they going to do each day except go to school? And honestly, if you just show up every day, most can do well enough to graduate. It also sounds like some of you are celebrating more than just gra
  9. Nope, not all of us. My oldest got a pair of inexpensive diamond earrings. My second one was going to a private school. She got a new laptop and supported (frugally) through four years of college. The youngest is graduating next month and he also got a new laptop. With the one graduating college this year and another graduating high school, I have booked a 4 bedroom house at the beach so they can bring some friends--but MOM & DAD will be there the whole week. Just my opinion, but I don't see graduating high school as a huge accomplishment. The girl finished her Bachelors i
  10. Glad to see you posting these again MC!
  11. I suspect he means, if you are too lazy to read the snopes article, that the picture was not photo shopped. It was taken at a MLK rally in Texas and it is unedited.
  12. You look beautiful SS! And I can affirm that Peggy at Allon treats me like that every time I come in. She is so unpretentious and real, and I always walk out feeling beautiful. I hope you are able to continue going to see her SS for touchups. It is a such little luxury that can make you feel like a million bucks!
  13. Hmmmmm......I'm feeling a craving coming on!
  14. I love the flowers! So what if it's sleeting outside???? It's SPRING! I want flowers!
  15. www.lgeccu.com is the web address. Should get you there.
  16. This is what I saw. I don't see anything about being under 18 (didn't think most companies would give a card to a minor w/o parental co-signor). The is off LGE Credit Union website. It looks like it might be a "pay as you go" or you need some money in your account to secure the card, but if it builds credit, it might be worth looking into. THE ACHIEVER The Achiever is a great way to build credit while still enjoying the ease and security of a Visa credit card. It features: No annual fee. No application fee. Competitive interest rates. No fee for cash advances. Safety, conveni
  17. I saw an ad for LGE Credit Union about a starter card. It may just be for member's kids of something, but worth checking into. Also, my college age daughter had the same problem two years ago. I went with her up to my bank and asked if they would open her a credit card account for $500. Since they knew me, they did it. I did not co-sign. She has done excellent with managing the card. (She is so cute. I scared the bejeezus out of her warning her about late fees, huge interest rates, etc). If she charges say $40 at Target, she will pay $20 the week after she charges it and then pay $20
  18. I do fear we, as a nation have become numb to the violations of our constitutional rights. We feel powerless to impact what is going on in Washington. It truly feels hopeless at times, but we have got to make our voices heard. I hope each of you read this letter in the OP. It really does not matter how you feel about healthcare--this is about sneaking huge transfers of power to the White House--power that should be with the Congress, the states and with the people. If you will take the time to read this, you will have your eyes opened.
  19. Thank you Ernest! I didn't have time to figure out how to do the link. I would give YOU a Mayberry if I could!
  20. Me either. I had pasted it onto a Word document....didn't know it would make you download it. Thanks
