  1. I didn't know what they were either. They look cool but I would be afraid of starting a fire with one. I did look up on how to make them, it doesn't look all that difficult if you can find the fire retardant.
  2. I'm not saying it will work, after all we will be dealing with government employees. LOL But the reality is people that have broken the law can't do service at the Library or Schools, others can. All Boy Scout Leaders have background checks done, they have to or they can't be leaders, if the BSA can handle it I'm pretty sure the state would be able to as well. There are all kinds of opportunities in Community Service.
  3. I honestly think most people feel community service is picking up trash on the side of the road. There are many, many things you can do with community service. Going to the HS and teaching some kids about woodworking, tools and safety would be considered community service. I'm thinking they look at it as a bad thing since it is used for punishment when a crime has been committed. I feel pretty confident that if this were to become a requirement you would have an option of doing community service within an area where you were comfortable, it would probably only need to be approved by a case
  4. Funny how one word can make such a difference. When I volunteer I am doing Community Service. If Community Service was mandated for me to receive some sort of benefit, I wouldn't have a problem since I do it anyway. You do get to meet a lot of "important" people, true story.
  5. Community Service and Non-profits are a great way to network. In my years of volunteering I have met people from all walks of life, Doctors, Attorneys, Judges, Corporate Business People, Executives from Coca-cola, Southern Link, Georgia Power, Georgia Pacific. Perhaps because I have given so much time to community service I know the advantages of volunteering, not to mention the pride I feel when I see one of those little guys or girls get to have the most fun they ever had. Before everyone goes completely berserk about community service, keep in mind it's more than picking up trash on
  6. If you've never eaten at Audry's you have got to try it. The food is wonderful!!
  7. No those taxes are a labor burden. I don't start deducting the labor burden when I hire an employee. The costs are figured in to the overall price of the product, I don't cut salaries based on the labor burden, it's a cost of doing business. I've done a lot of cost accounting and never have I factored in the employer's taxes to consider wages paid to employees. It increases the cost of goods but does not reduce labor rates. We've been in business for 20+ years and this past couple years is the first time we ever laid off employees for lack of work. Are you suggesting employers should also
  8. How so Mark?? Employees don't have any deductions from their pay check for unemployment. Deductions are for Federal Withholding Tax, State Withholding Tax, Social Security and Medicare are combined at 7.65%. Where do you see employees paying for UE??
  9. I think it's a good idea, it will open the door for possible employment. 24 hours per week still leaves a lot of time to look for work. I certainly would think you could schedule interviews around volunteer work. I do agree with Tranquility though, welfare recipients should be required to do the same or more. I'm thinking help at the senior center, the animal shelter, the courthouse, the water dept, helping the elderly and shut ins through DFCS, Chattachoochee Tech, the health dept, etc.............it's a great chance to get to know some people that might lead to a good job. Slam me i

  15. Who's gonna be the toilet paper?? Oh and I think you can go just about any night.
  16. Sick days, vacation days??? What are those?? I've been self employed for 21 years, haven't had a real vacation in at least 10 years.
  17. I'm not crazy about those green bags, I think they change the flavor of the foods put in them. Maybe it's just me but I don't use them anymore. Like surepip, we have a lot of fresh veggies year round. I planted a lettuce mix in a large bowl planter, it's sitting on my deck. It's just now big enough to pick. If it gets too cold (25 or below), I just pick up the pot and bring it in overnight. The mix is called mesclun mix and has 5 or 6 different types of lettuce. It's very pretty growing and eating.

  23. We do a good bit with our Scout group. I love hiking, backpacking.......not so much LOL Perhaps you can get with a local Scout Unit and see if they mind if you join them on a hike. Venture Scouts are boys and girls ages 14-20. They need male and female advisers if they are a co-ed group.
