  1. The green door building was a shoe repair shop when I was a kid back in the '50s. My Grandpa took me there many times to get my shoes re-soled and new heels put on, back when shoes were not disposable and lasted long enough to get them repaired several times. I was fascinated by all of the machinery and sounds and smells in there. I have many fond memories every time I pass by that building now.
  2. I loved his voice and his performance, and parts of his story except the stuff about being rejected by everybody. Duh!, isn't that the whole point of the Goth look, to look so freeky and weird that people reject you? It seems to me that that look and lifestyle is a self-made, self-fulfilling cryout for rejection instead of acceptance. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for individuality and self expression, but don't give me this whining about being "rejected" when you purposely make yourself look like a freek! By the way, I do hope he makes it very far, he has an exceptional talent!
  3. That'd be DLP TVs, not LED.
  4. All of a sudden I'm getting 4G on my Verizon phone about 6 miles South of Dallas on Hwy 61. I'm watching a Netflix movie right now from my Droid Bionic with a micro-HDMI cable on my TV. Does anybody know if this is real or just an atmospheric fluke? I'm getting almost twice the speed than from my Uverse internet connection! If this lasts, I may dump AT&T and tether to my phone for internet since I'm grandfathered into Verizon's unlimited data for the next two years.
  5. Uh, that would be called "BUTTERMILK" which is what happens when raw milk, with it's natural bacteria cultures, is allowed to set at room temps. I would drink it gladly, and by the way, I was raised on milk "captured in buckets". Now if you let pasteurized milk with all of the beneficial cultures killed in it set out for three days - that would be called "POISON"
  6. I don't yet know what to charge for them if I make them myself. I'm going to make a few first and see how long it takes once I get some kind of system worked out (whether welding, bending, or hog-rings is easiest). I bought the 150-foot roll and it came to $115.00 making it cost about $0.77 per foot and it takes 5-1/2 feet for each one so that's over $4.00 each just for the wire. I'll let y'all know soon. PM me if you want to talk about it.
  7. I'm going out to buy the wire this morning. I'll let everybody that's interested know when I get it ready.
  8. My link No, this is not hog wire. It's heavier and taller and much faster to rust, but it still lasts a long time. Look for "concrete reinforcing wire" at Home Depot. Here's a link http://www.motherearthnews.com/Organic-Gardening/2002-06-01/Using-Wire-Mesh.aspx from Mother Earth News. You'll find tons of references to it also if you do a search. But back to my original question, does anybody want to split the cost of a roll with me?
  9. I stole that moniker from an old friend years ago and have used it for a while now. Seems to be unique enough to use for a lot of online screen names. This stuff I'm talking about is nowhere near as heavy as rebar. It's more like fencing, but is of a heavier guage than most fence. It's also 6" by 6" so you can reach through it to harvest your tomatoes. You have to train your vines to stay inside it at first, but when they get bigger it's strong enought to support the ones that eventually grow outside of it. It's super easy to do, just cut a piece about 5-feet long, roll it into a cylinder and
  10. I cut the vertical wires at one end of the cage so you're left with 10 six-inch-long spikes to stick into the ground. You can use your foot on the horizontal wire above them to press them down all the way down into the soil if it's hard. I've never had one tip over.

    RIP Earl

How many of you got to see him at Raccoon Creek a couple of years ago when he made an unannounced apperance with Lizzie Long? That was a memorable experience!
  12. What does "that's a first" mean? Probably 'cause I'm usually such a smarta$$ on here, but sometimes I'm actually serious. I guess I could make the cages but I wouldn't know what to charge. I've always just bent the wires over at the ends to form a circle, and recently I've been using hog-rings to connect the ends together. Actually, I was thinking just today about using my welder to tack them together and see if that wouldn't be even faster but I haven't tried that yet. Bear in mind that this stuff is not galvanized so it does rust pretty bad, but like I said I've used some for over 5 years an
  13. The panels are not as tall (the fabric is 5-feet) and the cost is way more!
  14. I've harped on this for years on Pcom. If you'll just connect your digital TV to an outside antenna, or maybe rabbitears, or even a coathanger, depending on where you are, you can get all of these off the air for free (except for the one trying to get you to buy pay-for-view). There are probably over 50 channels available for absolutely free off the air in Atlanta.
  15. I made tomato cages from concrete reinforcing wire over 5 years ago and they're still in good shape, but this year I need to make several more. Problem is I can only find it in 150-foot rolls at HD or Lowes and it's a little over $100 a roll. I don't need nearly this much and was wondering if anybody would like to split a roll with me, either 2 or 3 ways? It takes about 5-feet to make one nice cage. Let me know if you're interested and I'll go ahead and buy the wire. These are probably the best way to grow tomatoes you'll ever find. Do an internet search on it if you've never heard of it.
  16. Wow! 241 TRILLION Dollars! That's getting up around the national debt! Did you maybe mean $241 Million or maybe 241,000,000.00 dollars! ninja!
  17. I love Aldi's and glad to see one coming so nearby. I think their brands are better than any of the other "Store Brands" I've tried and every bit as good as the brand names. Their marketing strategy is exceptional. They stock one brand and one size product, not four different brands of canned beans, and they don't stock those beans in 8oz., and 12oz., and 16oz., etc. If you need more, then buy two cans of beans. Less inventory plus less storage space, etc. equals lower overhead and lower prices. And the idea of no bags and bag-boys, and renting a shopping cart for a refundable deposit is ingen
  18. Sorry to disagree with everybody but please take a look at this: http://www.motherearthnews.com/Sustainable-Farming/1977-11-01/Fresh-Eggs.aspx And yes I did eat the eggs and I'm very much alive and healthy and that was over a year ago that I tried that. My eggs are fertile, unwashed, and totally organic. I would have never tried that with a store-bought, commercially produced egg. I'm scared of those even right off the shelf. Do a Google search on "illegal to wash eggs" and read some of the results. You'll find that in many European countries it's actually ILLEGAL to wash eggs because
  19. Thanks, that's something I haven't heard of but I will try it tomorrow. I'm embarrased to say it but I even bought "Eggies-As Seen On TV"! What a joke! Luckily I bought them at Wmart and just took them back the next day after dealing with that mess. I make egg salad by breaking them into a pan and baking them until they're done. I love deviled eggs (and I put a lot of the Devil in 'em with jalapones or cayenne and onion and garlic, etc.) and pickled eggs, but I can't make them.
  20. I know you know about poultry from your posts I've read on here and maybe you can help me with a boiled egg problem. I raise my own pastured chickens and sell a few fresh eggs (have my candler's certificate) but none of my eggs will peel after boiling. I've asked the county agent, the Dept. of Agriculture, and everybody I could think of about why they won't peel and I keep getting the freshness answer also. Well, For a test I left a dozen eggs on my countertop, not refrigerated, for 30 days and they still wouldn't peel. I don't wash the bloom off my eggs so I wasn't really too worried about th
  21. I can see right off that your problem is, in fact, with your tractor. My JD has a beer can holder right there beside the seat on the right-hand side, and a compartment that will hold several more cans laying down. I never have a problem with how long it takes to do yardwork. Get another tractor!!
  22. I've bought at WalMart on Sunday.
  23. Sorry 'bout the "PP" in the topic description but didn't want to put a non-commerce name in the topic heading. I occasionally take surveys as a SmartPanelist from FGI Research and get paid through PayPal. It's legitimate and I actually do get a few dollars every now and then for answering a few questions about products and services from grocery stores, home improvement centers, insurance companies, etc. but lately I've been getting a few surveys about AARP. Here's a response I just sent to FGI about these, should be self-explanatory: I'm really getting tired of receiving invitations to par
  24. Hard to answer the poll because it needs another choice for "Should the tree be felled?". Maybe not, keep an eye on it's health. Is the tree healthy above the cable? Sometimes a tree can grow it's cambium layer, which is the only live part of the trunk, over something like this and be perfectly healthy with the cable ending up being embedded in the basically dead wood inside. DO NOT pull the cable out! That would gird the tree by breaking the cambium layer all the way around the trunk and killing it for sure! Just keep an eye on it above the cable and see if it stays healthy and growing. You s
