For anyone who has a roku and your own video content check out Plex, its an amazing piece of software. Especially with myplex. We went to the beach a few weeks ago, and took our roku. Had access to all of our content, most notably our collection of kids dvd's. We got lucky with a good internet connection at the beach as well, so we were able to stream in HD. http://www.plexapp.com/

My alarm and 911 work with my 9.99/month vonage service. Definitely need to test the alarm though if you have one.

It depends on the package or bundled service you have. Often it will go up, but is less than having both services. Generally the cancellations department can give you a better deal than the first rep you talk to when calling. So if they try to jack it up threaten to completely cancel.

Thanks everyone you are too kind. I love supporting the PCOM family. Nick

I always thought it was independent of how much stuff you had. It takes x units of work to chill a certain mass to a certain temperature. So if you have 100 units of food it takes 100x units of work, or 10x of r10 units of food. Maybe the "logic" built in to the fridge has something to do with it. I know they have a run cycle but I don't recall the details. Maybe less start/stops it does, the less extra time its running till the end of the cycle. Hopefully none of my old physics teachers see this or I'll be in trouble I don't remember nearly as much as I should.

Roku Rocks. Cheap hardware and works well. However it only covers how to get the content to the TV. It supports pretty much all of the major streaming services though. If you have any questions feel free to give me a call and I'll answer whatever I can.

I've had mixed customer service experiences with them. Over all though I'm happy, for me the service is way better than the others, and I'd say customer service has been average. When I dropped voice they said my total cost would go up, after over an hour of going back and forth I ended up taking my bill from $180/month to $80/month fopr 12 months and $120/month after that. It was a pain, but worth it in the end for the savings.

Happy with the memory upgrade? My macbook pro hasn't crashed once since I upgraded to 8GB. It was a fairly common occurrence when I was only running 4GB. I don't know for sure it was the memory that was causing the crashes, it could have been fixed by an update as well as I did both about the same time. This is my first mac and I was severely disappointed before the upgrade. We just got a new dell laptop as well, I'm hoping to do some side by side testing in the next week or 2. I think the non-upgradable memory in the new macs is a huge mistake by apple.

I agree I believe it is possible, I'm not sure its worth it though. If its not their modem the first thing they will likely point the finger at during a problem is the modem. I dropped my voice service with them completely, and went to the 9.99/month vonage plan. Then using your own modem would be simple and you'd save an extra $30/month on top of the $7. Nick

I think this one is a good deal. If you upped it to 4GB of ram instead of 2 you'd be happier and you'd be sub $300. http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0386795

I dislike HP's personally, if your ok with just throwing away whatever you get in 3 years, then I'd look at some of the factory refurb deals at microcenter. You can get a nice machine for ~$300. That said I would not plan on more than 3 years of life out of it.

Anybody else have AT&T HIGH-SPEED DSL
CedarcrestPC replied to freebird20050's topic in RECENT TOPICS
The .21 Download speed is pathetic, that is definitely a problem, if they can't get you service any faster than that I'd be switching for sure. Here's my 2 cents on Cable vs. DSL: Comcast speeds are amazing, up to 100Mbps. Often you will get MORE speed than you are paying for. Comcast will throttle you speed, but not until after a significant amount of downloads. For example, if you were to download 2 full size DVD's in 30 minutes, then you will start to be temporarily throttled. For 99.8% of users this isn't an issue. In terms of netflix streaming you'd have to stream 8 full mo -
My wife noticed several things she was clicking on were linking to weight loss and other junk sites including one that looked to be trying to install a virus. It seems to mostly (if not only) be on baby things my computers are doing the same thing so I know it's not her machine. Anyone else seeing this? Nick

I'd try calling Chattahoochee tech, I know there are a lot of assistance programs but I know very little about them. As Marteen said there are VERY few computer classes at the Paulding Campus, but lots at the Acworth and Marietta campus. Of course I am biased to Chattahoochee since I teach there Nick

While definitely rare Mac virus' do exists. If your using one make sure your running some AV software and installing all patches. Main points if you don't feel like reading the article or watching the video: 500,000 - 600,000 infected computers. Vulnerability was published 3 months before the patch was released. All updated systems should currently be good to go. http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2012/04/06/how-to-protect-your-mac-against-malware/ http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/video/virus-infects-mac-os-computers-16087838 http://www.securitynewsdaily.com/1693-apple-patch-mac-f

If the density of macs ever gets high enough the ROI will no longer be cost prohibitive and they will be attacked like windows. That's when we will really be able to tell if Mac is more secure than Windows. I think it is, but not by the wild difference in the numbers today. It all comes down to business when it comes to malware, and for the moment the only profitable target is Windows. The next trend will be mobile devices. A good team of programmers could in theory make a virus(actually a worm) that will propagate itself from phone to phone without the users doing anything or even

During the install for MBAM there is a "Activate premium edition 30 day trial" or something similar, make sure to un-check that and your good to go.

My understanding it they are a certified vendor that does the warranty work at no cost.

It's possible, It's called "EMI" ( Electromagnetic Interference). In short there is a magnetic field that electric currents put out that can interfere with data communication lines. Its one of those things that gets talked about a good bit in academia but isn't seen all that often by average users. You can use an AM radio and put it where the modem is/was. If you getting any issues from EMI you should hear increased static on the radio.

Laptop power cords are the same way you can spend $20 on one that will last 12-18 months or $80 on one that will last 3-4 years. Often though the laptop won't last that long if its a replacement power cord.

Agreed, it should be the same password.

-$30, but for the amount of time I played I'm thrilled with that I'm not a big gambler which is good, I was amazed how quickly people were throwing down $100 bills and loosing them in a hand or 2.

Thanks! Sorry about the phone tag, I was in Vegas for 2 weeks for a conference, but back in action here now.

Firefox does tend to upgrade every 15 minutes or so now, I have given up on it and use chrome now. That said the updates should be cumulative, you shouldn't have any old versions of it installed. If you do under add/remove programs I would remove them. For those with IE problems try starting IE with no addons: Click Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools, and then click Internet Explorer (No Add-ons). See if you still get the error then, that will help isolate what the issue is. Nick
