  1. As I stated, when the laws were passed, the communities were majority Christian, and the laws were reflective of the popular belief of what was desired. There were religious undertones to it, but it was not the primary reason for the laws. Unless you are an anarchist and don't believe that government should pass any laws, then you have to give the government power to enforce the laws as generated by the legal processes that we have in place. I'll go back to the list of other laws that are pretty much "morals" based. Public Nudity, Drinking age, age of concent for marriage, and sex. T
  2. I thought we were still talking about local elections, not our President and congress!! If the outcry for change was from enough people, then it would be changed. The problem is that you are still on the side of the minority, and not enough local support for change to your point of view. If everyone convinced their representative in local or state government that it needed to change, then one individual could not stop it, not even the Governor. It's called checks and balances. We have the opposite problem at the national level... the vast majority is crying no, but they're not li
  3. First, let me say that I think the blue laws are antiquated and not relevant in today's society. If you can buy a drink and then drive home, you certain should be able to buy it and go home to drink. But it certainly is not a separation issue. Most laws are the result of the morals of a local community. We pick and choose what we want to enforce. We have anti-nudity laws, legal drinking ages, legal ages of consent to marry, have sex, etc. All are based on what the community involved sees as "moral". At the time these "blue" laws were passed, the majority of the people were Christian,
  4. I don't think saying it for the 100th time will make it any more true! I still think it is a saftey issue. While most permanent signs are now of the universal type, the hazard and construction signs that are so prevalent in our area are always in English! A basic knowledge of written, not necessarily spoken, English would be a great benefit to road safety.
  5. Pat, I let this one go when it was originally posted, but due to another vote, it came back up. I have to respectfully call BS on this one! First, I'll just go with your premis and ask why it is ok for me to have to pay higher taxes to support their refusal to learn the common language, but not to ask them to learn it? It is certainly taking away money from more tax payers than it would take from non-Americans to learn the language. Am I, and all taxpayers, not entitled to the same constitutional protection you are presuming? But now for the BS part... anyone who has lived in thi
  6. You have to think about your happiness, not someone else's. Your job is where you spend more time than anywhere else. There could be someone waiting for you at the new place that will need you just as much as at your current location.
  7. If they have been here long enough to be required to have a license issued by the State of Georgia, then they have been here long enough to have learned enough English to pass a test. If they have moved here, then they should be interested in learning the language, not continuing to expect us to change to their language. Make English the official language and require people to use it!
  8. You're right... I guess I should have said a poor attempt to bring attention to her failed career! But, my guess is that she still makes more in a year than I will in a lifetime, so....
  9. Just had the 36th anniversary of our first official date, and are coming up on 33rd wedding anniversary.
  10. That has been my favorite E-trade commercial. Hasn't Ms. Lohan's lawyer checked out the list of most popular girls names? Lindsey has probably been on it every year since she was born. Just one more failed attempt to try to bring attention to herself.
  11. May God hold this family close! Jason, thank you for your service, and rest in peace knowing that you have served well and made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedom of others.
  12. What is this... last week it went north, this week the main accumulation is going south! I want to see a nice "snow"! No ice, just snow. 2-5" would be just fine.
  13. A lot of people state that you are only required to give the number of people living in the household. I liked that idea, and until I actually looked at the Constitution, thought it true. While the purpose of the enumeration was just a count, the Constitution granted the legislative branch basically a free pass to ask anything they want... "in such Manner as they shall by Law direct." The founding fathers probably just meant that they could conduct the count how they wanted to, but has been interpreted to mean that they can ask what they want as well as how they want. And with most laws, they
  14. I've been there several times, and it's all been great. Cakes, brownies, gingerbread cookies, bisquits, hiramized ham... ok, I'm hungry now. I highly recommend it, and the prices are as good as Kroger, and I think the quality is better.
  15. We picked one up after Christmas. It is great for getting us out of the chair, and actually doing a little activity. It's fun too! I didn't understand one of the "memory" tests, and it asked me if I often forgot where I parked the car!
  16. If I ever see a member of our armed forces out eating (and I have any money in my pocket) I will pick up their check. I know how much our son appreciated the gesture, so it lifts my heart a bit to do it for someone else's son or daughter. I don't leave out our other public servants: police, fire, and emt. They put their life on the line as well. I just wish I had the funds available to do it more often.
  17. Certainly one of the best shows out there. Kinda sad that you cheer on a serial murderer, but it is so well written and acted, you can't help it! I agree that the two biggest questions to be answered are how will he explain where he was, and Deborah was getting that suspicious look (or was she overwhelmed with the news of his mother and brother that she was just looking at him a little odd?) I can't wait for the next season!
  18. I'm very sorry to hear about your trouble. Living in the same subdivision, we are very concerned about an increase in this type of activity all around. IMHO there is very little in the world worse than a thief. Right down there with child molesters and rapists... I think the HOA has been talking with the Hiram PD and the PCSO, since part of the subdivision is in the city limits of Hiram, and part isn't. Good luck!
  19. I'll be there for one in the morning! City ham was good today! I don't know anyone else who likes fried bologna like I do. Everyone else says yuk!
  20. Well worth it, and God Bless them all! A small cost to bring a little bit of home to those brave men and women. We have one of our son's friends up from Ft. Benning today since he couldn't get home.
  21. What she said! Are we not good enough?
  22. Not much to add to this! Bringing them to American soil is a huge mistake.
  23. Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS) I can tell you first hand that this is a wonderful organization. They are there for families who have suffered the loss of a loved one for as long as needed. There are many great organizations that are there in the beginning, but TAPS understands that it is really a life long loss. Look at their website. There are many ways to contribute, from giving of your time as a volunteer, to online donations of money or airline miles.
  24. I really hate to hear about both of these losses to the local area. Good luck on the next "adventure"!
