  1. When Apple becomes the cheapest for my needs I'll consider it. Otherwise forget it.
  2. Tell them that you are cancelling your service. Mention that it costs too much at this time and you'll be looking for something with x speed that costs y. They will work with you. When I cancelled my phone service, AT&T offered to upgrade my internet speed for the same price I was paying for DSL lite. It's still the same price as before ($19.95).
  3. I kept the long boring mortgage back in 1996 and finally paid it off a couple months ago. We both drive hybrids now. One I bought for $6500 and the other was $4000. Both were bought back in 2009 when gas prices were low. We combine for about 35,000 miles a year so doing this saves a bit over $2000 off our annual gas cost. I am also going on far fewer trips than in the past. Our shopping regimen is a bit more strict these days. Kroger for staples. Harry's for organic apples, carrots, and other miscellaneous produce since it's right near our church. Brook's Salvage for meal packages tha
  4. Very sorry for your loss. I hope you guys pull together in this difficult time.
  5. Well, I guess I better move to a different county before I die...
  6. Marvin, you came here and stated that you wanted to "know the concerns and needs of my fellow citizens." I have offered a reasonable question in an open forum. You can feel free to answer it or move on. It's not going to break my heart either way. I appreciate you trying to establish a dialogue here. It's not an easy to do... so let me blunt in suggesting that specific examples in your responses may help you establish a platform that will differentiate you from the typical 'I am for small business' politico. What specifically will you change? How is that going to make things bette
  7. "I don't know how much beurachracy really exists with having Dallas as a separate governmental entitiy, but as I mentioned before, I believe it is a state law which requires each county to have a municipality as the county seat of government. Hence, it would take an exemption from the legislature to NOT have Dallas in existance as a county seat." Excellent point. However I'm not sure if that is always the case.
  8. Surepip, did you intentionally move or set up your business in city of Dallas? Or was it simply because the real estate was already there? This fellow is saying that the city government of Dallas will 'be a true advocate of small business' if he wins the mayoral election. Perhaps he may be right. I hope so. But historically small city governments in this state spend far more in taxpayers money than they attract through their activities. That's not a healthy recipe for any community. If the voters had the means to dissolve a city government, they would potentially save millions in taxp
  9. "Mayor's are supose to fight, negotiate, and communicate the benefits of their locations to acquire industries." Fine. Once again. Please give me an example where the revenues generated by doing so outweighed the expense of maintaining the city government. Just one.
  10. Mr. Tingler, that is a fine example of a STATE initiative. http://www6.lexisnexis.com/publisher/EndUser?Action=UserDisplayFullDocument&orgId=574&topicId=100020422&docId=l:1070791725&start=8 I was inquiring about a small city government like the one in Dallas. Surepip, I happen to believe that small city governments have their purpose. I have no problem with them existing at all so long as the citizens that reside there approve of it. County government can already provide services to the area. So the question is whether the residents prefer to have a city gove
  11. Fair enough. I do believe citizens should have the right and opportunity to vote on that specific issue. Not allowing them to do so is the equivalent of 'taxation without representation'. Since there is no way for the citizens to dissolve a local government that may become predatory or inefficient. But I appreciate your candor. As someone has already mentioned, P.com is not exactly the place where you will get softball questions. One more related question... Can you provide any specific example of a small city government in Georgia creating or attracting private sector jobs that w
  12. $10 a month for cable. We have Dish Network. I have seriously thought about buying a large antenna for the roof and cutting it off. $15 for AT&T internet. $28 for the local phone. We're going to convert to internet only for $15 and use Google Voice for the home phone. $5 for wife's Tracfone. My business phone is $40 with MetroPCS. I would almost rather give Saudi Arabia my money than AT&T.
  13. We talked about this a few weeks back. It was a very interesting discussion. http://paulding.com/forum/index.php/topic/270614-just-got-our-familys-electric-bill-and-wow/page__st__40 Turns out that our bill for last month was not $13.60. It was $12.36. Cobb EMC sent us a letter recently stating that they are going to be putting a new meter on my house some time in the future. We'll see if that changes anything. In the meantime our gas bill last month was $44.87. We have an 1800 sq. ft. home. 2 story. Nothing special.
  14. Ok, one simple question. 1) Would you allow the citizens of the city of Dallas to vote, via referendum, as to whether the city government of Dallas should be dissolved? I happen to believe that most small city governments in this state are glorified pork barrel operations. They tax the residents and businesses. They tax the citizens of this country through worthless pork barrel projects. They run up the interest in our federal debt without accountability or remorse. Most of all... They are hypocrites incarnate. City governments bestow an illusion of practicing 'small business frie
  15. Put your turn signal on, drive slowly and proceed to the nearest road off of Hiram Sudie. The police officer will be glad not to be near traffic when administering his duties. If he asks why you didn't pull over into the ditch, just mention the safety issues of incoming traffic on a major road.
  16. Folks were saying the same thing when Bush Sr. was in office. The difference between then and now is that we are no longer the primary engine in the global economy. China is the steam that pulls all boats. In order to even stay in the same place as before, China has to CREATE 25 MILLION JOBS every year. A lot of those folks are better educated than the average American and have the benefit of working in a country with minimal to non-existent taxation. I am not a fatalist. But as a realist I WON'T be blaming the government for something that should be resolved through free enterpri
  17. Soda is poison. If they're stealing it, serves em' right. However, I'm waiting for the day when the Russian Mickey D's start offering a rum coke combination with every meal. You may laugh. But in Paris you can order a glass of beer... and I'm not talking about no paper cup. I'm talking about a glass of beer.
  18. Hmmm... not bad. What type of antenna do you use? It must be quite a unit to get 40+ channels. My family watches 'the Hub'... one to two shows a day. That and video games are about all the TV we do. What type of channels do you get?
  19. Well who knows? For the prior six months our electric bill has only been $20 or less. The only appliance we keep on at all times using electric energy is the refrigerator. Everything else is unplugged. It still looks like we're only averaging about 3kwh a day. About half of what we were doing a year ago. Given that the price of everything seems to be going up, I'll gladly take the minimal costs. I'm actually trying to keep all our utility bills to below $180 a month for the year. Right now we have... Trash $12 / month (Could be brought down to $6 if we shared with a neighbor)
  20. It's a middle-aged refrigerator. Top freezer / bottom fridge. 2001 GE model. The annual operating expense is $44 according to the U.S. Government's Energyguide. You may be right about the energy usage. But then again we've been far more vigilant this year. We'll see if things keep up.

    used cars

This should help you a bit. http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2007/06/how-to-buy-a-used-car-pt-1/ http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2007/06/how-to-buy-a-used-car-pt-2-test-drive/ http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/category/editorials/car-buying-tips/page/3/ http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2007/07/how-to-buy-a-used-car-part-4-negotiating/ Your answer depends on what you need. If you just want 'a good car' visit dealerships and private individuals. Keep in mind that prices of used cars are up about 30% from where they were in December 2008. The $1500 then is the $2000 car now. T
  22. It's all really a game. We've always had that type of attitude when it comes to finding the most reasonable way of doing things. I think all of us have 'things' that we do that effectively let us beat the system. It could be buying things that last. Keeping track of grocery expenses. Knowing someone in a line of business that allows us to reduce the cost of that expense (home repair, cars, food, etc.). My wife and I haven't mastered every nook and cranny of living at this point. Not even close. But through 17 years together we've developed one helluva list. As for the refrigerat
  23. Georgia has so many counties. Is it 170 or so at this point and about a hundred or so city/municipal governments?
  24. Yep, ditto. He went out of his way to find the rightful owner(s). I hope they gave him a nice chunk of it as a finder's fee.
