  1. Here's a story I did way back when about one of the fellows who got caught doing this in Paulding. Turned out he was financing one of my cars :0 http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2009/05/hammer-time-repo-2-2009/ Note: This is definitely one of my more R-rated articles. You have been warned.
  2. My complements to his speechwriter. Not to belittle who he is... but with rare exception whatever is said in a speech by a major politician comes from the fingers and thoughts of a speechwriter.
  3. I went from being the very first student at Emory with a laptop computer... to a complete luddite. I use an old digital camera for pictures. I use the cheapest cell phone I can buy for calls. I use libraries and a cheap DSL line to read. To be blunt, apparently I've become one of those folks that only buys technology when it lowers my expenses. Like Ooma. I do have that for my home phone. All these comments at P.com make me feel like I'm actually missing out on something.
  4. Learned a long time ago that everything I need can be found cheap at auctions, garage sales and thrift stores. Not to mention barter, freecycle, sharing with neighbors and plain old doing without. Retail only works well for groceries and gas. Everything else I either use a deep discount of some sort or just avoid altogether. Black Friday? A good time to buy motor oil and coolant at Pep Boys. Otherwise I'll gladly enjoy the utter lack of clutter in my life.
  5. Black Friday is a great time to stock up on motor oil and coolant. The rest of the stuff I buy used!
  6. All of you who have lost loved ones have made a positive tangible difference in this world. My thoughts, prayers, and blessings to all of you.
  7. That son of a bitch murdered my high school principal's brother back when the Pan Am plane got blown up over Lockerbie Scotland. Glad to see that this terrorist got his just desserts.
  8. Since I write about the dealer side of the business, I'll see if I can help. Mind me asking what was wrong with your explorer? I doubt I can even get $1500 for my van! (Minivans are the least marketable vehicles in the used car market next to conversion vans.) It is a '98 Chrysler Town & Country. (Has the transmission been replaced yet? What's the mileage?) Needs a catalytic converter (Cheap to do. Go on Ebay and buy one. I know a fellow who will weld it for $75 to $100). A new windshield ($150 to $175) The headline has come undone in some places ($100) the seat
  9. Ditto. If there is anything else we can do for her please let us know.
  10. Our next door neighbor had a problem with these woodpecker-ish birds that are native to this part of Georgia. NOw that his home is foreclosed and all 'pecked' out, we're starting to get some visits. So far we've had three holes. One of which I covered up earlier this year. For some reason they stopped pecking our house. But about a weeks ago they started with abandon. We bang on the walls. Make scary sounds. Throw frisbees. They will go away... and then come back a few hours later. Peck, Peck, peck. I'm thinking about a BB gun or some type of repellent at this point. Any advice from th
  11. So long as I had the right person with me it would be more than fine.
  12. As I've already mentioned. Just take steps to dis-incorporate the city. If enough folks got behind the idea it could become a reality.
  13. Powder Springs really shouldn't exist as a city at this point. Other than an enormously overstaffed police department I can't think of one solitary benefit the residents get from the city's existence. Wait... I know... they have streetlamps!
  14. $90 last month. I think we've only consumed $500 in electric over the past 12 months. Maybe not even that much.
  15. Starr you are inadvertently supporting my position... in a good way. Whenever you have big tax burdens... people cheat. When you have smaller tax burdens... fewer people cheat. I'll respectfully disagree with you on the 'flat tax'. But I enjoy your argument. Random aside now... In China, automakers that want to do business in the country are required to have a 'domestic partner' that has a majority share in the enterprise. Perhaps instead of just letting our tax base go down the drain of cheap foreign labor (and tax shelters) we should erect laws that protect the
  16. "I don't remember the exact percentage, but my hubby actually sat down one day and computed the total amount we paid in taxes--income taxes, property taxes, ad valorum taxes, sales tax, etc. It was considerably more than 30%." You just nailed the two specific problems with the flat tax. The first is that all this is doing is redistributing all the taxes into the 'consumption' side of the equation. If we are to pay even the same amount of money now all consumable goods will go up in price by 30%+ (by your calculation). That will discourage spending two ways. First, it creates a huge in
  17. The development of a new tax system goes far beyond the scope of this discussion. As for the IRS, you still would need to have a government authority WITH TEETH to collect taxes. But if you really want to make everything a bit more equitable you can eliminate 'cash' and have everyone use credit/debit cards with the flat tax simply accounted for in those transactions. Of course, you may have issues with Ferarris and yachts. Along with the fact that people may buy about 23% to 26% more with plastic vs. dealing in cold hard cash (if you believe the research). Then there are the folk
  18. Fair tax is a canard. It only taxes spending... not assets. If you only tax only one side of the equation, what you end up with is massive numbers of people who go out of their way to evade that tax. You will also have far less local consumption than you would in an economy where there are no federal taxes for goods and services. Most proponents of the 'fair tax' fail to realize that the only net effect this policy would have is a steep tax increase for the middle class. Jobs are created through four sources: 1) Consumer spending 2) Corporate Spending 3) Government spending 4)
  19. I've used clippers for more than 10 years now. Before that I would go to the beauty college in Powder Springs. I think it was about $3 a haircut back in the 1990's.
  20. We had amazing stability in our neighborhood for the last 10 years. Only three houses changed hands and two of those sold before they even had a sign up. Now three of the four houses that are closest to the same side of the street as me are foreclosed. Some schmuck puts up signs on our corner offering '$100 down' to move into one of the houses. Only one new car has been bought in our entire subdivision over the last three years. I won't even go into detail about the street perpendicular to ours which seems to have a never ending flow of renters and foreclosures. I don'
  21. I put three vehicles online on Ebay, sold another vehicle this afternoon, and had a wonderful dinner with the family.
  22. Norwegian Cruise Lines does an exceptionally good job with their cruises. I went on one last year with the family and had a great time. But I do have to tell you this. I would much rather do a 4 day Disney cruise than a 7 day Norwegian cruise. The level of attractions, services and cuisine you get from Disney is absolutely off the charts... and I am saying this as someone who generally does not like most of Disneys offerings.
