  1. Here is a nice synopsis on the film industry in Georgia. http://www.georgiaencyclopedia.org/nge/Article.jsp?id=h-3521 I can confidently say that I know absolutely nothing about this business. I do wish the folks involved in it the best of luck.
  2. These things happen in life. Congratulations on your new career and I'm sure you will have many happy career moments in the times ahead.
  3. I have Ooma with AT&T. The line is only $20 a month for medium level DSL (3 MBPS). I 'HATE' AT&T. Once my contract is up I will be switching to Comcast. Even if it is an extra $10 a month.
  4. Whenever I buy an old Police Interceptor, I'll leave it at the front of my driveway facing the road so that any wandering soul who doesn't belong 'gets the message'.
  5. Interesting story... I was driving back from the Kennesaw/Acworth area when all of a sudden I see this car ram into the curb. Kept a healthy distance away from him and then... "Wham!" Right side of the wheels jump a driveway and the marone is driving with only two wheels on the street. By this point there is no way in hell I'm going to let this guy stay on the road. I call the police and remain in communication with them for the next 10 minutes while this poor shmuck crosses the double yellow, hits another curb, and even blows through a red light. Finally the guy pulls off to his h
  6. We just got ours in from Cobb EMC. Total monthly bill was $91.78. We consumed about 43% less than the year before. Since September last year we've reduced our consumption by nearly half. For 8 months straight our electric bills were $20 or less. I am happy about it given the state of the economy... and the fact that Cobb will more than likely jack up property taxes by 13%.
  7. "With that knowledge, I don't think the county can do more than delay until their next meeting when the Chairman is present. Indeed, I suspect that the chairman's absence is the main holdup at this point." That was my issue. I am absolutely loath to criticize any governing body (or individual) without first knowing the circumstances of their decision. Surepip's situation sounds like one of the more egregious ones I have heard. Once everything is finalized I would love to read the judge's opinion on this decision. Surepip I enjoyed our conversation a few months ago. Thanks for all
  8. You wouldn't survive a day in my house. We are like the Brady Bunch from hell. Always clowning around. Always noisy (except when reading). Never a dull moment.
  9. I did my practicum at the APS. God what a terrible and corrupt place. Never in my life did I see so much dysfnuction and bad teaching put into practice. Yes, I did see a few good teachers who were worthy of all the help and praise in God's green Earth. I even worked with one. But step just one classroom away and you were in the middle of a teacher's hell. A few classic moments I remember... 1) The school had a person who apparently did nothing other than to make photocopies for the teachers. She spent her entire time either shucking papers or watching TV in the teacher's loung
  10. $10 for DirecTV. $20 DSL service. $11.50 a year with Ooma.
  11. I would not be so quick to judge the BOC as it pertains to surepip's case. The board may have already had a planned agenda and it may have been too late to add the issue of surepip to that meeting. I don't know if that's the case or not. But I would not plainly assume that the BOC have ignored the judge's ruling.
  12. Well, Trash Taxi agreed to match the rate. I will be getting the last three months for free and 29.97/quarter thereafter. Life is good!
  13. A lady from Waste Industries came to our home today. She offered $29.97 every quarter with 1 quarter free. That works out to about $7.50 a month. Anyone else have someone come over to their place?
  14. All bills are on bill pay. I audit all of them and generally keep up with how we're doing vs. the prior year. Family expenses are on a Google Docs spreadsheet. We've made a grand total of 15 purchases in 12 days. I also keep track of free stuff. So far we received about 60% of what we would normally spend in free stuff. We don't do coupons in the typical 'Extreme Couponing' sense (who needs 42 shampoos?). But we are pretty resourceful and spending averse. My wife is good with tracking things via the net and the greater Atlanta community offers a lot of neat activities.
  15. One of the things that I am thankful for is that my father had me grow up in a European styled household. Wine was available Friday nights and we drank it in small quantities. He had hard liquor a couple of times a week... maybe one or two shots as a relaxant after a particularly long day. It was never seen as a 'demon' thing. My brothers gave me a sip of beer when I was real young and I found it to be the most disgusting thing I ever had. Thought it tasted like iodine. Did I get drunk at parties? Yep! Maybe once every two to three months. I liked to travel a bit so I would usual
  16. "So the Hispanics in some towns are closing shop to protest HB 87." I'll tell you what. If you stop generalizing other human beings I'll stop generalizing you.
  17. We ended up buying a (rhymes with Puma) system for $129. Best Buy price matched the $179 sale that Costco offered, and my wife received a $50 Best Buy card from one of her Sunday school students. It works perfectly. You do have to get a wireless router ($30) but the setup was the easiest I've ever seen. We ended up having a real old one from way back in 2007. Other than about $15 a year in taxes... I'm laughing! No I don't get any money for this. But I absolutely despise (the monopolistic phone company) with a passion and figured if folks want to cut off their home line f
  18. My thinking was more in line with small businesses that need office/parking space.
  19. I think you are jumping a bit. What type of schools will you teach at? I hope you're aware that the schools there can be every bit as bad as the worst here. What will be your cost of living? What school will your son attend? Any reviews or point of reference for those schools? Will you live in a good neighborhood? Heck, does your son even want to go away for a year? How does your ex feel about not being able to see his son for a full 12 months? You need to ask a lot of these hard questions for everyone involved. I have a wonderful wife. But if some terrible thing hap
  20. As a lot of folks have already pointed out, it's very hard to make any type of judgment as to where 'waste' may be without looking at the actual cost of those county operations. Much of what appears to be a county expense can either be funded by the state or may in fact be a federal mandate. That being said... it may be time to consider our 'resources' instead of just the expense side of the ledger. I see certain areas where we can build local businesses, or at least make them easier to operate First Floor of the Government Building - There appear to be perhaps six people who
  21. With the heat wave going through Georgia, we ended up using about 7% more in gas from the year before. Monthly gas bill came to $38.17... and our $20 streak was officially snapped with a $50.83 charge for electric this past month. We're still down about 40% overall in our electric usage. I'm aiming for around $150 a month overall in our gas and electric. This year we may be able to pull it off.
  22. Believe it or not... the 2001 Honda Insight that I drive daily. Most folks didn't take much notice of me a while back. Now I can't get anyone to leave me alone Frugal, extremely logical, perfectly laid out, and most of all... modest! http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2010/04/hammer-time-50000-honda-hybrid-miles/

    Coffee

None. I quit coffee as part of my new year's resolution. But if you want the answer pre-abstinence... like a milk shake.
