  1. Hmmm...might not be a bad idea...if it means they are asking for less money from me! Couldn't be too tacky, though...it would still have to be obvious that it's a police car.
  2. Dad's can have a unique perspective into handlling things and that's great. Both parents have to back each other up, though, so the kid knows he's not gonna divide and conquer. We've only had two blowups with our oldest teen but both times we didn't back down. He didn't like us checking up on him with friends' parents at all but his father told him, "Ronald Reagan brought down an entire evil empire with a few words and if it's good enough for him then it's good enough for us: 'Trust but verify!'" He's also been told that if we can't handle him there are places we can put him that will. Th
  3. Vaughan Elementary in Cobb lost electricity this morning for at least 30 minutes, too. Kids had to have cheese sandwiches since they couldn't cook.
  4. I don't live in Paulding or work in Paulding. I live in Cobb County. I am within a mile of the Paulding/Cobb lines, though, and do a LOT of shopping in Hiram and Dallas simply because it is easier to drive to than Marietta/Kennesaw/Acworth. I frequent Sam's Club, JCP, Target, Kohl's, PetSmart, a barber in Dallas, a dentist in Dallas, the Kennestone health facility in Dallas/Hiram, and some others. Am I unwelcome on this board by some?
  5. http://www.wsbradio.com/news/news/local/cobb-county-homeowners-get-wrong-tax-bills/nCdZL/ What the heck is this all about? Estimated tax bills are in error? "Cobb County property owners trying to figure out why their estimated tax bills are suddenly so high. Hogsed says his office has had a few walk-up complaints and about five times the normal number of phone calls from taxpayers wondering why their estimated taxes are so high. Hogsed says five of his employees are answering those calls, and says tax bills that come out later this year will be accurate; adding anyone who’s out of
  6. I hope we learn the rest of the story...was he cheating with the guy's wife or significant other? What's the story about her? Inquiring minds want to know.
  7. We are in Cobb and our assessment valuation came today and is now about $12K less than we paid for it in 1999. It's always been lower than what it would probably have sold for but this time it's way less! I have no plans to sell so hope to just ride out this decline. Funny (?) thing is our tax bill has always run about $1000-1150 per year and they are still estimating an $1100 tax bill in October.
  8. I completely agree with you on this. Any business that wants to be successful should thank its customers for choosing them to provide whatever service it is they offer. I've not returned to businesses because they didn't thank me...there are plenty of choices out there. Even so, I often say, "thank you" to employees simply out of habit and I like it when they respond, "It was my pleasure to serve you!" or "Thank YOU!". Really, how hard it is to be a little bit formal and follow the rules of etiquette? Manners make life easier.
  9. EDITED to remove my post. I vented for a short time and feel better but don't want to leave my whining out there.
  10. Oh...a Designated Driver...at first I thought you were looking for a double date or a large-busted woman!
  11. If it's not a French Drain problem it could be a broken joint in one of the field lines. We've had leaks where the line had separated at a turn or for some odd reason (rocks move underground and water washes out supporting ground). Dig it up and see what's going on before calling anyone.
  12. Don't have advice on a specific car but please consider paying for collision insurance in addition to liability/comprehensive insurance. The collision insurance will cover his car if he is at fault (less whatever deductible you choose). We insured a 1994 Toyota with collision despite it probably being worth in the $2000-3000 range and it cost an additional $60 for 6 months. Depending on your personal situation, you may be able to afford to lose the money you spend and come up with more money to buy another car but many cannot. Chances are he IS going to rear-end someone or bump a car in a
  13. http://www.gadgetking.com/2009/10/09/surprise-mugs-for-the-mug-thief-in-your-office/ A few examples for this common coffee thief problem on the site above. Another idea...go to www.artscow.com and order coffee mugs with your photo on them. — A woman working at a Chatham Street office reported the theft of a $25 coffee mug. The woman said she believes her co-workers hid it from her because they don’t like her. http://www.lagrangenews.com/view/full_story/12678268/article-Juveniles-suspected-of-damage-at-gym?instance=news_special_coverage_right_column
  14. Good idea on the locker! Regarding the cream-stealing, coffee cup thief...write "Shorty" on the bottom of the cup or on the handle.
  15. Glad OBL is dead. The military did a great job. Not a fan of BHO but I'll let him have his day in the sun. I'm happy he allowed the hit and it was successful. Not sure he should have refused the bombing of the compound a while back. This risked the lives of 40 of our country's military men. The reports I heard stated he ordered this attack in place of bombing so he could have proof that OBL was dead. Tomorrow the unemployment rate will still be high, gas prices will be higher, food prices will be higher, the Fed will still be printing money that causes such inflation, we'll stil
  16. What do Publix or the police groups that take it in do with it? I've never flushed old medicine down the potty. I do, however, leave it in its container and put it in the trash can where it's held in a plastic bag and will end up either in an incinerator or lined landfill and breakdown over many, many years.
  17. Thanks. I'd really like to find some to put in my car. It'd be worth a little extra money to get better mileage to me with less time between fill ups, too.
  18. Question for Subby and a little off topic (sorry)... Do you know anywhere around here to buy gas that does not contain Ethanol? I read that there is one place in Cartersville called Enterprise that may have it but I'm not going to drive up there to find out. I've been reading how gas mileage is decreased anywhere from 5-20% because of the ethanol laden gas. I've also read that it is very hard on mowers, motorcycles, boat engines, weed eaters, and other gas burning engines.
  19. Wow. Very strange looking cloud formation (near Chattanooga).
  20. http://www.myfoxatlanta.com/gallery/special/galleries/photos-severe-weather-tornadoes-georgia-alabama-20110427 There are pictures of Ringgold in this photo album mixed in with Cartersville and other areas. Check out the McDonald's photo #13 in Ringgold.
  21. In case anyone has family/friends/students in the Rome area: http://www.romenews-tribune.com/view/full_story/12943159/article-Berry--Shorter-cancel-classes-due-to-storm-damage--Floyd-Co--schools-out-at-1-p-m-?instance=home_news "Berry College and Shorter University have canceled classes this morning due to heavy damage on both campuses. Berry classes are canceled through noon, while Shorter classes are canceled for the day. Both campuses have reported extensive damage and dozens of trees down. A Berry spokesperson said that '8 or 9' trees have fallen on cars on campus. Powe
  22. I like Kirklands, too. If gas prices weren't so high I could afford to travel and shop more. It's come down to driving for pretty much necessity pm;u trips now.
  23. Would these panels be covered by homeowner's insurance?
  24. I'll be driving there shortly!
  25. I think the only tax consequences up to the $12.5 or $13K is that after that the giver (your mom) will have to pay taxes on it. I don't think you have any taxes to pay on it. I'm sure there are a few on here who will have the definitive answer sometime today.
