  1. Collards have been in the crock pot since 2 am when got home from work. A couple more hours and they will be just right. The ham is in the oven, soon to be joined by the sweet potatoes. Egg custard pie was made yesterday. That's all I was assigned this year
  2. I'm pretty sure they know what it means from the get-go...have known more than a few priests who left the priesthood after many years, but have honestly never personally known or heard of a nun who left after taking final vows.
  3. my aunt's sister in law is a Grey Nun. she's one of the coolest people, nun or otherwise, that I have ever met.
  4. Migraines are the debil. Don't have as many now that I take propranolol every day. When I do get them, a dark, quiet room, a heating pad on the back of my neck, Excedrin for Migraines, and about 3 hours to sleep it off are the only things that work. Sometimes I can head one off with caffeine. I have found that things with sulfates will trigger mine, like wine. I also can't drink Gatorade or Powerade (not sure why, but they're guaranteed migraine producers in my world)
  5. Yep. Tuesday nights from 8-11 are my must see TV.
  6. 5 years with the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM) and 4 with the Sisters of Mercy (high school). The IHMs still wore habits that covered all of their hair, the Sisters of Mercy were usually indistinguishable from anyone else on the street. From the IHMs I got a fantastic education, academically and religiously, for which I am forever grateful. The Sisters of Mercy, in addition to lessons in the classroom, were the ones who taught me that just because someone has taken religious vows, doesn't mean they can't have a sense of humor and a good time. I am in awe of all of them for
  7. Looks like you posted while I was typing, which took forever
  8. yes. nuns work in schools, hospitals, universities, as social workers, you name it. Not just as teachers or nurses or what have you, but also in administrative, executive, and research positions. I've known a couple who were lawyers. Different orders tend to concentrate on different areas. There are still a few orders that are cloistered and concentrate on prayer (technically, these are nuns, and the ones who are "out in the world" are sisters.) They go through a novitiate (priests go through seminary), the length of the novitiate depends on the order. Most orders actually prefer for candida
  9. not sure yet...I LOVED decorating my house, it was MINE and I could do whatever I wanted to. Now I share a much smaller house with my brother, but I've already told him he needs to just let me do my thing. All the turmoil has cost me enough, I need to be able to look forward to some of the same things as before. I LOVE wrapping presents (I refuse to use gift bags!), I love finding lots of little things that are picked out especially with the receiever in mind. We had so many lean Christmases growing up, I enjoy making sure Mom has lots of things to open on Christmas, because for so many year
  10. lemme see.... - having a great place to land when the world turned upside down in April (I got to move home to Savannah) - being able to wake up every morning and admire the view out my front door - beautiful sunny days on the river, like today was - that I paid my car off the month before the world turned upside down - that I was able to find a job (albeit part time) that I REALLY like, working with really good people - that I'm finally losing weight - that St. Patrick's Day isn't too far off - that both of my biopsies came back negative - for the neighbor's 7 year old dau
  11. A bad economy, and even a recovering economy, has a way of thinning the herd when it comes to poorly run businesses...kind of survival of the fittest. The ones that adapt, or even just kick it up a notch, will survive if they are willing to ride it out. Places like Mrs. Winners, well, I'm surprised they've lasted this long... I think it's kind of interesting that 90% of the Mrs Winners stores are corporate owned (not franchises). Don't see that much anymore. The company used to be owned by RTM, the largest franchisee of Arby's & Shoney's restaurants. I guess whoever bought the company
  12. The one & only time I ate Mrs Winners, I got a god-awful case of food poisoning. So, can't really say I have a whole lot of sympathy for them
  13. because I'm nosy as hell because I don't have much of a life these days so I come on here to live vicariously through some of the more interesting threads, I'm feeling REALLY alive tonight
  14. Had Trash Taxi when I lived in Paulding. Never missed a pickup, and would take all the grass clippings and anything else I put next to the can for no extra charge. However, if you ever leave / discontinue your service, good luck getting them to come get the can. Been trying since May to get them to come get it
  15. If an IEP specifies that a student gets a para, because an IEP committee deemed one necessary, then the student gets a para. The school board doesn't get to say no. Like it or not, they have to provide one. If they don't want to provide one, they have to have another IEP and get the committee to agree that the student doesn't need one. Sounds like this principal knows her basic federal education law better than the higher-ups. Also sounds like someone above her wanted her gone, and couldn't come up with any justification for getting rid of her, so they latched onto whatever they could find. Ha
  16. If that's what it is, I don't think the flushes/cleanses/enzymes are going to be much help. Sounds like a structural problem, and sounds like a good gastroenterologist is in order, just to be on the safe side.
  17. Gall bladders are vestigial structures, just like the appendix. They served a function at one time (way back when), when human diets were more heavy in plants, foliage, etc. They still serve a purpose in the body, but neither does something that can't be done by another organ if they have to be removed. I know people who've had their gall bladders removed who now have trouble eating foods with small seeds, i.e. strawberries. Me, I didn't have to change my diet at all after having mine taken out 4 years ago. Be careful with the cleanses, enzymes, and flushes. The body is pretty good a
  18. I keep reading that the county "should have known" there would be such a turnout because people are upset/mad/fed up/this is such an important election. But, I hear people say this every election cycle, and voter turnout is still shamefully low. Historically, people haven't bothered to get up and go vote in midterm elections (when compared to presidentital election years), even though there is just as much campaigning and rhetoric leading up to midterm elections. Why would the election officials think this year would be any different from previous midterm elections? Isn't EVERY election impor
  19. I made a point of trying not to be negative...just trying to add a little perspective
  20. Oh, what a problem to have!! First, I will say I didn't have to wait at all to vote. HOWEVER, I will NEVER complain about having to stand in line to vote. When I think about how long my grandfather & uncles spent fighting in the Pacific during World War II, or how long people in places like Iraq & South Africa waited just to be able to have the right to vote, and how many people all over the world are still waiting for the right to vote in free & fair elections, a couple of hours just doesn't seem all that bad to me. If Americans voted in these numbers during every el
  21. If the grandmother is so ill that she is unable to travel, how is she going to take care of 3 little ones, especially 3 who are so desperately in need of one on one care & assurance right now? I'm pretty healthy and I get worn out from an afternoon with my little cousins. Please tell me she has someone helping her? God bless her for taking them, knowing how difficult it will be for her. If she is able to care for them (either alone or with help) and give them the love & attention they need, then they are exactly where they need to be. permanently.
  22. Just got back from voting. Left the governor's contest blank. The only choice was picking the lesser of 2 evils. Problem is, the lesser of 2 evils is still evil. I don't vote for evil. Either way we are screwed. And either way, I get to say, don't look at me, I didn't vote for him.
  23. LOVE the idea...but I've seen the people in the Hiram & Dallas walmarts. I don't want to see any of them with any less clothing on. There are no beer goggles thick enough.
