  1. No, the state will not be able to force members of the clergy to officiate at same-sex marriages, but at some point the question that is bound to come up is the right of legally ordained clergy to function on behalf of the state. In many countries, in order to be legally married, one must have a civil ceremony with a judge, notary or registrar; one is then free to have a separate religious ceremony, if one desires. In this country we continued the English tradition, whereby an ordained clergyman, so long as he has the civil marriage license in hand, performs a legal marriage that is recognized
  2. I rented wheelchairs from them twice. Great service both times.
  3. School systems reflect the values of the society that creates them. Sure, schools have their own subcultures, just as any segment of society does. However, everything that has been mentioned here is a result of the values that this country, region, state and county hold. Sometimes there is tension between these different sectors, and school systems reflect that, as well. While it can be a great force for great things, it is neither the cause nor the cure of the things that we dislike. It is a mirror of who we are as a people.
  4. All great flicks! The Strand Theatre in the Marietta Square is showing The Birds on Friday evening.
  5. This is the natural result of the presence of the for-profit artificial insemination industry, now wedded (pun intended) to the same-sex marriage paradigm. Both are post-modern departures from the historic, natural law understanding of marriage and the procreative act. When something is completely redefined, and begins to include something that was previously understood to be outside the scope of its existence, and something that had always been understood to be immoral is redefined to be permissible, the result is moral and social chaos.
  6. Dr. Khalid Siddiq near Cobb Hospital.
  7. Pardo had a whole career beyond SNL, consisting of many game and other shows, including the original Jeopardy.
  8. In the 1950s, Hispanics, especially Cubans, were not considered a separate race. They were just Spanish-speaking whites (or blacks), just as there were Italian-speaking, German-speaking, French-speaking, Greek-speaking, etc., whites. The notion of Hispanics as a separate race did not begin until the 1970s, when the census bureau began counting them that way, partly because of the mixtures between whites and indigenous people in Central America.
  9. There was also a black sitcom in the seventies called That's My Mama, starring Clifton Davis and Theresa Merritt, along with a pre-Love Boat (Isaac) Ted Lange and a pre-Good Times (Sweet Daddy) Teddy Wilson.
  10. Wow, I thought that you were a well-informed person, not one to make sweeping statements. I am the last person to be a fan of large numbers of immigration, both legal and illegal, but you are not speaking about facts here, just stereotypical generalizations. ---The lawsuit in the OP was in Wisconsin. We do not have enough information about conditions there to be able to make sweeping statements one way or the other. Circumstances faced by immigrants there differ in a number of ways from conditions here, due to differences in climate, region, industries, numbers of immigrants, among other f
  11. I understand that and I agree. However, that is not what the lawsuit in the OP was about, nor most of the posts in this thread.
  12. I agree that the lawsuit is ridiculous, in any event. But do bear in mind that in many parts of this country, many low-paying jobs are not easily, or even usually, filled by native speakers of English. And I am not just referring to minimum wage fast-food, lawn care, housekeeping, etc. The labor pool for many jobs is predominated by ESL speakers. Again, I think that the administration's lawsuit was ridiculous, but I am pointing this out to those who claim that they would never hire someone whose English is spotty. In many places, one has no choice, unless one is prepared to pay significantly h
  13. Someone does not understand. HOAs are not frequently involved in court cases. They are not just a bunch of people making up arbitrary rules. When an HOA is registered as a corporation in this state, the HOA convenant becomes a legal deed restriction, meaning that future buyers agree, when they sign closing papers, to abide by the rules of the convenant. The HOA corporation has the legal obligation to enforce these deed restrictions. When residents do not follow these deed restrictions, the HOA has the legal authority to enforce, according to the terms of the convenant, through the process laid
  14. The calendar on The Events Place website says that the event is 5:00--7:00PM. http://www.cityofhiramga.gov/Facilities/Facility/Details/The-Events-Place-4 A public notice sign I saw on the side of the road says that it is at 7:00PM. I am guessing that this format is one where there are flyers, posted maps and pictures of proposed items, and then there is a brief presentation summarizing the posted and circulated info.
  15. Clark Howard says that fake money orders often clear at one's own bank, but can take two more weeks to be determined as counterfeits, before the bank supposedly issuing it identifies it as fake and gets back to the bank that deposited it.
  16. President Ford signed the legislation in the mid-1970s that was to coordinate the eventual conversion to the metric system in the US, and a commission was created to make this happen. It was understood that this would be a gradual, and sometimes painful, process, so no specific timeframe was established, though most seemed to expect that by the mid-to late eighties the process would be completed. Unfortunately, the process was a flawed one, and seemed, IMHO, to focus in its early days too much on conversion from British to metric units, which usually resulted in unwieldy decimal numbers, w
  17. What is "the listing calendar" and what is "the actual school calendar"?
  18. Three bedroom houses were already being rented in this county for significantly more than $650 at least a dozen years ago--I remember that from when I was helping a friend locate a home to rent--so why $1K rents for a three-bedroom house today would seem surprising to anyone actually surprises me.
  19. There are many fake money order scams around--Clark Howard has warned against these for years. I would definitely be concerned. I would never accept anything less than cash for a car. I would visit the bank ASAP.
  20. I live in an HOA and wouldn't have it any other way.
  21. It is legal for adults to speak on phones, but not minors. It is illegal for anyone to text, Source of the update?
