When I speak to a group of people in New York, or Chicago, or California or Denver, neither my degree or my 35 years of experience make one wit of difference. All the vast majority of the people hear is my accent and they immediately think I'm a backward hick that couldn't possibly know enough to tell them what needs to be done or how to do it. Half the time I have to let them screw something up on their own before they realize that I might just know something more than when to plant cotton or how to rotate the tires
