If you laptop/computer has an HDMI output you can connect it to a TV, a S-Video cable will also do it. So no you really don't need a device. And there are plenty of site where you can watch TV shows, movies, etc. without needing a subscription service either. Some websites you can watch shows that were on the night before, sometimes a few hours earlier without needing to pay.
