The dog had it's teeth buried in my leg. I made a kicking motion to throw it off of me. Threatened? Hell, no. Pissed? You betcha. At that point, I really wasn't interested in whether the stupid little dog suffered or not. It and its' owner have been banned from AKC competition, though.

Pit bulls ARE mutts. There is no such breed. No more than there is a Cockapoo or a Labradoodle or any other "designer" breed. Dog breeds have been created over centuries for specific tasks. Spaniels and Setters and Pointers and Retrievers all have specific traits and are bred to perform certain tasks for the sportsman. Herding and Hound breeds have specific traits and abilities for the farmer. Terriers go after rodents....etc. Useless little foo-foo dogs have a purpose, to be a loud,noisy, yappy little pest...

Last spring, we were at the cluster of dog shows at Perry, watching one of our dogs compete. I was wandering around in the vendors' tents, looking at the merchandise, minding my own business. Suddenly, from out underneath one of the tables, I got bitten by some little foo-foo useless toy breed dog. It's owner had it on a leash, but was not paying any attention to what her dog was doing. There are a few pedigree lines of Springers that have a "Rage Syndrome", where they just flip out and attack someone. One of our friends who lived in St Louis had an old Springer. Tom was getting out of the shower one morning and the old dog just attacked him. Marlene grabbed the bedspread and threw it over the dog and they wrapped him up in the spread, still fighting and snapping, and hauled him off to the vet to have him put down. That's the same thing I think about Muslims in the USA. But, I digress.... I agree that the "variety" of mongrels known collectively as Pit Bulls is genetically pre-disposed to fighting and mauling. And they generally serve no purpose other than a status symbol in the "hood". What worries me is a bunch of knee-jerk reactionary legislators who want to ban "pit bulls" and write laws and ordinances that infringe on the rights of legitimate dog owners and breeders. No, "pit bulls" are mongrels, not a AKC breed. The American Staffordshire Terrier (Am Staff), which looks a lot like the common street version pit bull, is a sweet, loving breed. I've been to hundreds and hundreds of dog shows. I've never seen an AmStaff behave poorly. They are happy, outgoing, pleasant dogs. No way am I defending the back-yard "breeder" like Michael Vick who bastardized a wonderful purebred line, but before you go off on a "breed", try to know what you are talking about.
