Pubby, I think you know where I stand on most of this, however, what do you suggest the initial administrative action be? Guilty or not, they are still employed and chances are one or more of the officers have family to feed. Until there is a determination made, why shouldn't they be suspended with pay? In the end, a department has to have some sort of official policy on suspensions. Where do you draw the line? Better, yet, HOW do you determine where to draw that line? Suspend all officers with no pay when circumstances warrant administrative suspension; or do you suspend just some?

Moral hazard of letting the torture news slide?
audioslave replied to gpatt0n's topic in RECENT TOPICS
What do you think the definition of torture is? No worries, did the work for you: torture: the action or practice of inflicting severe pain on someone as a punishment or to force them to do or say something, or for the pleasure of the person inflicting the pain. -
Moral hazard of letting the torture news slide?
audioslave replied to gpatt0n's topic in RECENT TOPICS
Please, for the love of all that is decent, those who still defend the program say it isn't torture, explain what you would call this: """At least five captives were subjected to painful rectal rehydration or rectal feeding, without documented medical necessity. In one case, the CIA put a captives lunch hummus, raisins, pasta and nuts into a blender and inserted the food into his colon through a tube.""" -

I am past that point. I reached the feeling of powerlessness with all of the Snowden leaks. The fact that heads of the NSA and CIA are now on record outright lying to congress (under oath), the DOJ, the State Department, the President, and the American people--without consequence; what the TRUCK can you or I do that will make a damn? This goes beyond politics and demonstrates deeper institutional power and autonomy that exists unabated by the President himself. -
I spent a week there last month for work. I was in data centers or our West Coast HQ most of time so I didn't get much site seeing in. However, I enjoyed the parts I did see. I would move there tomorrow.

How TCU was not in the #4 spot is beyond me. Otherwise I am good with the top 3--although the top three rank order is iffy IMO. Also, I think Ga Tech should have at least been #10 or better.

Saw that too. Ars is one of my daily go-to's along with Krebs.

Been there and done that on the TurboTax--the main reason I just use the online version. You can use the same license key to reload the Office stuff. They will usually give you 2-3 activations before you have to call them. At least that has been my experience--of course YMMV. Have you attempted to recover the failed drive at all?

Yes you can still purchase Windows 7. As cmorg stated, you can pick it up at Micro Center for $99. However, if you will search around online you will find it a bit cheaper. Microsoft will continue to provide extended support for Windows 7 until 2020. Generally speaking, no you will not be able to retain your system as-is if you change OS's. Possible? In some circumstances, however, it is not a good practice and you will probably end up with more issues after than you have now. If I may ask, what particular sort of stuff are you concerned with having to move over if you changed

There are malicious Linux viruses in existence. To say that the only viruses (your original statement said 'one') that exist are POC's is a canard. I am the biggest Linux and open source advocate on the planet. I am not asserting Linux is not secure--I am simply trying to extinguish the notion that malicious 'in-the-wild' viruses don't exist. It simply isn't true.
-
You said: Linux is not 'virus proof' and more than one such virus, as you stated, exists. I think the broader conversation should be 'malware.' To establish the 'secureness' of any system or OS, you must first look at the attack surface and vectors. Further, a 'virus' is only one form of infection. To the layman, any infection is a 'virus.' Thusly, as someone who administrates many dozens of Linux servers on a daily basis--most of which are web facing, I can attest Linux is NOT 'virus proof.' If I sat back each day with that attitude I would not have a job. Rootkits, trojans

Here We Go Again. No Indictment in Death in New York

Did you even read the article before you said that? I am truly curious. -
Now, I am the biggest Linux supporter on Earth, however, nothing is virus proof.....nothing.

I have posted about this before and I guess I will add my two cents once more: If you are using any consumer version of XP and you use it online, it is not a matter of if, but a matter of WHEN your machine will be pwned. Period. The 'work around' listed above is to install updates intended for a version of Windows that only ships with POS or otherwise industrial purposed machines. Period. It is NOT for consumer use and does not plug vulnerabilities what would otherwise be addressed for folks using it on a consumer system. If you actually read the entire article it will tell you a)

Loose wires are possible, however, unlikely given you haven't moved it. When you put a CD in the drive, does it spin up? Does the activity light on the drive illuminate?

Much agreed. I watched this video when it hit the internet and have thought a lot about it since. The guy was obviously a little bothered (putting in lightly) about being approached for selling his cigs, however, I challenge someone to find the point at which he resisted. A choke hold is a choke hold and someone with asthma doesn't require their entire wind pipe to be restricted to go into arrest. Don't forget, the medical examiner ruled this a homicide. -
Did you actually watch the video? There wasn't much resistance once he was under arrest. He was a bit animated when they approached him, however, he said over and over he couldn't breathe once put in the choke hold. When EMS showed up they didn't even make an attempt to help him. Bottom line, for me at least, is he never made an aggressive move--not to mention the only reason they even approached him was for selling single cigarettes. For the record, I am on the other side of the argument on the Ferguson and other shooting.

Does it still say "You've got mail!!" when you start it up?

Just as in poker, football has the uncanny ability to make good decisions look bad, and bad decisions look good. Either way, GaTech won. I don't blame it on anything other than they were the superior team yesterday. I am kind of happy to see someone take the triple option and run it directly up everyone's ass. -
I can tell you this--you will damn near slam the cabinet door off the hinges when you realize it is not a leftover Halloween decoration. I thought my daughters were playing a joke--I almost grabbed it to put it on the counter. I was pretending to be 'scared' and playing along until my five year old daughter informed me that she did not put it there and my wife said 'uhhhh...we didn't have any fake bats during Halloween.' When I realized they weren't joking I slammed the door and got the hell out of the kitchen.
-
My assumption is it got into the cabinet via the stove venting (there is a small gap between the vent and the ceiling). It probably got that far via a hole I discovered in the gable vent screen in the past hour. I went out to see if there were any other bats hanging around the venting. There is a small hole. I am going to seal around the vent at the ceiling tomorrow.
-
So, I got tired of the exterminators I called not answering the phone and I caught it myself. My wife did recon, opened the cabinet door, and I trapped it under the plastic container. Released it outside.
-
Ten years ago, I would have been all about trying to catch it myself and releasing it outside. I know bats are protected and I really have no desire to open the cabinet and start swinging the broom. To be honest, I don't have any desire to deal with it at all. If there is anyone I can call locally to come make it go away I will gladly write them a check.
