  1. I know some of the roads are hard to do this on, but if it ices, you will get better traction if you have 2 tires on gravel. when I lived in the north, if caught in an ice storm, I would drive (on secondary roads in the boondocks) with 2 of my tires in the snow on the side of the road just to gain traction. If caught on a back road with ice, try this and drive VERY slow. Also, use common sense on where this can be done. Obviously if the side sits low from the road, or near a steep banking, you dont want to try this.
  2. LPPT-I totally agree with you on this. Normally, if it is cold and rains, the roads here are warm enough where you can still drive. They are not that warm now. If it starts as rain, the roads will be like a skating rink within minutes. Not to sound dramatic or anything, but I too am a Yankee and have plenty of experience with this. Ice storm of '98--Most people lost power for 5 days to 2 weeks. If it starts at 3pm, the buses are already on the roads, and the roads WILL ice immediately. If it starts as snow, it may not be so bad, but rain is not good. I will be checking the weather toni
  3. Exactly what I was looking for, thank you! I respect your opinion. You get to see first hand how it impacts our children's behavior and education. I kind of thought it would be tougher coming back from another vacation, but maybe they are rested and more attentive after. Thanks again.
  4. Thats what I was thinking. Maybe they will sell the sushi, and have it mounted. I cant imagine paying that much, unless its for GOLD!!!
  5. For those that are teachers, can you identify yourself as such? I really would like to know the majority opinion from them. Many opinions are based on vacation schedules, but how about from an educational standpoint? My children adapt easily, and I can figure my time around the school for the most part. Note--I'm not getting on to anyone that is mentioning vacations. My boyfriend has an annual fishing trip to Maine the first week in June, and it will make it handy if we can all travel together. All calenders work for that, so, it was on my mind too!!
  6. Yes, I see your point. Really, it doesnt bother me but transition from summer vacation to school, then vacation again all in a few weeks time is a bit much. BUT..vacations are nice because I only have to get myself up in the morning!! I have no experience with an early vacation in September, and wouldnt be opposed to trying it. I dont have a big problem with my children and school so I dont think A or B would be a big deal. As far as the mailboxes...that would be a parenting issue. Maybe the children that are allowed to "hang out" and destroy property need to spend their summers in boot camp
  7. I like A or B the best. I really like the thoughts of them getting out earlier, rather than in June. B is okay, but I dont see the point in starting a week earlier, then having a vacation the very next month.
  8. My boyfriends son just graduated from National Guard youth Challenge with his GED. He is now off to Turner Job Corp in Albany, GA. It assists with job training and placement. If you know a young person needing some direction, please check into this. It seems really good. The dorms for individuals are similar to college dorms, but they also have housing availble for single parents. While the parent is in training/class, the child goes to a childcare program. This could really help a single Mom find her way. They have a website if anyone is interested. They also assist with GED/Diploma
  9. Wow, I never thought of that, thanks! Oh, and could make scalloped potatoes out of it, too? Hmm...this ought to be fun!!
  10. I dont always agree with some of your opinions, LTD, but I value your knowledge and have gained a lot from reading your posts. Just an FYI. (I wasnt the one that called jackals, just so you know)-I did refer the the forum in general as a bee hive, pack of wolves, or pirannahs, but it was meant to be playful. It does get heated, but I respect the way you present yourself in there. I dont respect insults that dont contribute to the discussion.
  11. Oh, this place looks so nice!! I hope my Mom comes for a visit this year, she would love to go there! Thanks!
  12. I made beef jerky that was done this morning, now I have pineapple and bananas in it now. Does anyone else use a dehydrator? What do you make?? I used the jerky recipe off the box, but I would like to try others, if anyone has any.
  13. You are one that seems pretty civilized. Its the jabs that dont pertain to politics that bug me. Its mostly the one-liner replies that are the worst, if ya know what I mean.
  14. See, the problem with me is...I dont like either side particularly. There are many things I agree with, and many I dont from both parties, administartions etc. So my posts, over time, can be wishy washy. I refuse to like/dislike a policy or action just because it was brought on by a certain group. I dont believe there is a rule that you have to be pro democrat or pro republican to comment. As far as posts being based on facts, yes, many of the republicans support many of their posts, but the facts are also flooded with opinion. I dont think it is right that ALL opinions need to have a Fox
  15. I dont have any daughters and would not peirce their ears if I did because of the pain factor. BUT..I do think there is a big difference. Is the removal of tattoos 100%? Does it naturally go away? Is it costly?
  16. Where would that be? Do you have an example of a thread that carried on civilized? There are snide comments and personal attacks from both sides, depending on who doesnt like the topic. There are some that actually will state their opinion, in an educated and civilized manner, and others that jump in with a totally off-topic rude comment. Do you disagree? I enjoy having conversations with people that I disagree with because thats how I learn things. Thats how it broadens my mind. If you just sit around and agree with each other, your mind never opens. I'm just saying that oftentimes its har
  17. No kidding...who would have thought about that??? My ex may be dumb, but I never would have thought to put that in the papers!!! Actually, my children are smarter than to do something like that, as I am sure many are. (Even if their father told them he would do it if they wanted).
  18. Is it still personal if you havnt directed it at someone? Seriously though, its true. Or pack of wild wolves, pirannah tank, or possibly a bee hive, whatever way you want to tell it. I would have liked to see a conversation that was carried on like adults. You can ask a simple question, and get a negative remark, instead of an educated answer. Many of them are very educated, but ruin the chance of anyone listening to them because of the negativity.
  19. LOL! I have felt the same way at times. The first thread I started over there was a doozy. I couldnt sit down for a week!!!! Believe it or not, if you open your mind and listen (unlike many of them over there do), you will learn something. I did.
  20. They were not old enough to decide they wanted them. Just like children are not old enough to just decide they want to drink, smoke, vote, drive etc. There is a reason why people are considered an adult at 18/21, and oftentimes that is too soon. I am not opposed to tattoos, but I am 31 and still cant figure out what I would want permanently on my body. Just because it was a cross, does not make it right. I dont care what religion or beliefs they have. Is branding okay too, as long as its a cross?? You cant tell me there was no pain...duh..how else does the needle guitar string imbed the
