  1. I think once they pass a year, it becomes years not months unless it is something like 3 1/2 year old. Gotta love those "halfs".
  2. I wonder what would happen if the caller said they were sending the police out and the person who answered the phone said "go ahead". Get a phone slammed down on you, would you?
  3. Must be the season for this. The local TV stations are issuing the same alert, as well as the "jury duty" scam and the "family member in jail" scam. The sad part is people need to be warned.
  4. It's a shame that the three branches of government don't seem to know what their roles are and keep trying to take over the role of another branch.
  5. “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.” Joseph Goebbels
  6. I am quite sure there are a number of people, myself included, who would dispute the claim "We also know that the continued rise in health care insurance has been thwarted since the passage of the ACA" My premium alone went up almost $100 a month or $1200 a year. My deductible went from $1500 to $6250. Not only that, I had to pay that $6250 before my insurance would pay the first dime but the $1500 did not have to be paid before my insurance would pay anything. So, not only did my premium go up about 25%, my deductible went up more than 400%. The darnedest thing happened though. Our i
  7. What is the tax rate in some of those other "advanced" countries? 60%? Paying 60% of your income in taxes and still having months long waits for things you get here in days. Seeing "consultants" who may not even be familiar with your condition? What good is preserving your financial security if you're dead or terminal because of the delay in getting diagnosis and treatment? Like I said, no system is perfect. But in the US we need to take what is right about other systems and what is right about OUR system and come up with a better system, not copy a system that is no better than ours
  8. I would like this collection. Sounds like mine. And yeah, I have almost all of those plus a few others that you wouldn't expect. I have some contemporary Christian songs on my iPod as well. Plus some songs that are censored so badly when they are played on the radio that they are barely recognizable when you hear them uncensored. And what is wrong with "Sugar, Sugar"?
  9. Anyone who thinks insurance companies are in the business to help patients needs to find out exactly how much help people who are hurt on the job are "helped" by the insurance company. I saw enough in my time working in the medical field to know insurance is the worst thing ever to happen to the industry. There are still plenty of doctors graduating every year and starting practice. Few can afford to go into solo practice or even into a small practice. They have no choice but to go with large health systems and to become in-network with every insurance plan they possibly can. I
  10. My daughter was born in 1980. We didn't have insurance. We paid for everything ourselves. I think the hospital bill totaled $800 or so and the doctor bill was about $400, maybe. And the doctor gave me a "friends and family" discount since I worked for his wife's cousin. I think it took me three months or so to pay off the hospital and the doctor was paid off before I went into labor. And who needed insurance? Health care was affordable. I was still paying $10 for a visit to my primary care doctor back in the early 1980s. It all went to hell in a hand basket when Ameriplan came in
  11. I've never understood the concept of paying more than asking price for a house. I don't go to the grocery store and tell them I'll pay them $12 for that $10 package of steaks nor do I go to the gas station and tell them I'll pay $3.75 a gallon for that gas they are selling for $3.60. Why should I pay more than asking price for a house? Maybe I have more Scots in me than I think.
  12. I've had arthritis in that knee since I was 14 and was told at 21 that at some point the knee would need to be replaced, likely before I was 60. I broke the foot the first time when I was 36. So, no, the knee was in bad shape long before I broke the foot. Where it is written that one must pay for other's health care? Or mortgages? Or boats? Or cars? And if you don't think it's your place to do so, you're somehow not compassionate?
  13. I'm just really happy that my knee replacement surgeries are going to cost my insurance company about $45,000 and cost me less than $7,000 (and that includes what I paid for that insurance won't cover), plus $6000 in premiums for the year. I appreciate that "spreading the cost" concept. If I were having to pay all of the cost, I would be paying for the surgery for the remainder of my life. But you know, people do that. They really do make monthly payments to hospitals and doctors. It's usually cheaper than paying for insurance and then your deductible, co-pays and maximum out of pocket.
  14. I wish. But a million dollars for birth control is a bit high, don't you think? And after all, the discussion is about birth control, isn't it? FYI, I walked around on an unhealed fracture of my foot for 16 years because I didn't have health insurance nor did I have the money to pay to go to the doctor. When I broke it a second time, my orthopaedist chewed me out good for not coming to him when I broke my foot originally. I told him I didn't have money or insurance. He told me that we would have worked out something. I know we would have. I just could not go to him knowing I couldn'
  15. I guess I grew up in a different time. I always knew I had to pay the doctor bill.
  16. Health care should be up to the patient and their doctor. The government and employers (and insurance companies) should butt out. I don't need Uncle Sam or my employer to tell me what I should or should not do when it comes to my health. That should be up to me and my doctor primarily and up to me and my family.
  17. It seems as though freedom of speech (or freedom of action) is only allowed if the speech or action is politically correct and/or most people agree with it. Why should an EMPLOYER have to pay for an employee's birth control? They can't ask if you have a family, if you have a method of birth control or if you have plans to become pregnant. Why should they be required to pay for birth control? FYI, they still provide 16 of the 20 forms of approved birth control, including oral contraceptives, sterilization, condoms and diaphragms. Oddly enough, all through my reproductive years, I (a
  18. To qualify for a conventional loan, the property must be appraised at a high enough price to justify the price. It must be livable and it's my understanding that certain mechanical features MUST be in working order (for instance, it must have a working heating unit). At least this is how my real estate agent, who has about 25 years experience in the business, explained it to me. The biggest difference between government backed mortgages and conventional mortgages is the conventional mortgages are issued by banks and are not insured by the government. IOW, if the loan is defaulted on,
  19. I could be wrong about it but I thought whether or not a property qualified for a conventional loan had to do with the property itself and not the type of loan on it already. I do know there are restrictions on most Freddie/Fannie properties as far as how long the buyer must live there, how much they must put down, etc. We finally gave up trying to buy a government owned/mortgage insured by government property. It seemed that they didn't want cash buyers and only wanted to deal with those who were financing. Congratulations to your friend for sticking with it. It's a long,
  20. Cobb County water bill payments are sent to Charlotte, NC.
  21. Sounds like the tag bills are generated by one company and they forgot to change paper.
  22. I guess a lot of people simply don't read what is on their tax bill. I would think Paulding lists it just like Cobb does. Ours does here (though as I said, I'm in the city and don't pay the fire protection tax).
