The software I use to do take offs from digital blueprints costs nearly $1,000 a year and doesn't work on Mac. Even with software to make it compatible it has some glitches that can cause mistakes worth thousands of dollars. Anyone that is happy about this economy is a damn fool. Just because your particular industry is okay today doesn't mean you won't get hit somewhere down the road. Even the health care industry can be affected (even though some people like to think they are bulletproof). One example, insurance companies are denying procedures that they were freely signing off on 12 months ago. I have some stuff starting to happen, but until everyone in my industry is busy again, this economy will be considered bad. I absolutely believe that if Romney had been elected things would be much better.

I would have tried a different approach. Bicycles cause pollution by holding up the traffic and causing drivers to have to accelerate to pass them (I actually floor my diesel to give the cyclist a good breath of smoke for holding me up). I think if a bicycle is going to be ridden on a public street the owner should have insurance, license plate and a bicycle license.

I have considered retirement and I don't know that I can (psychologically). I pretty much do what most of you guys are calling contract work. I price and bid commercial construction. The company I work for has offered to let me scale back as I want to a 4 day week and then 3 when I am ready. This is the perfect deal for me because I am one of those weirdos that actually enjoys what I do. And there is no way in hell that I can fish more than one day a week and not get completely burned out with it.
