I just talked to Melissa and she says that Thad is now out of surgery and everything is looking up ... A lot of work was done and he should be in a lot better shape now that the parts have been rearranged and put in their place. It would appear that the prayers have been answered. pubby

Be Careful What You Say. And, Don't Smoke On Private Property.

You're looking too narrowly. There are a lot of people who seem to think there's absolutely nothing wrong with insulting OTHERS in any and every context. This means sometimes it is the person who is pulled over who acts entitled and other times it is the man who did the pulling over. You judge too harshly, low. pubby -

Let me argue why making race something that is a determinant is about keeping people in their place. If race didn't matter, no one would care. It would be as insignificant as an ugly little toe nail. Would you care if someone had gnarly nails on their little toe? Would lying about it and wearing closed toe shoes to cover up that gnarly little toe? Would you really care how pretty or ugly someone's little toe is? Lets assume that you are an only female child from an American Indian family. And your parents, living on the reservation adopted not one, but four white boys. Would yo

Really, we'd all be far, far ahead on this if we didn't care at all and accept the projection of our identity as an element of our freedom ... but no ... people want to keep you in 'your' place ... whatever or wherever in the hell that is. pubby

I think your characterization of the so-called hate crimes being 'fabricated' is your opinion. There may not have been adequate leads to investigate but that is far from an official finding or even belief that the incidents were not real. Now if she had been charged with filing false reports, then you'd be on solid ground in your accusations. As far as the realities, I do think that she ended up in a family that adopted four black males to come live with them pretty much says what I need to know. Mom and dad obviously seemed to love her black brothers more than her - maybe there is a l

I can see it how you think I was coming up with excuses. Not really. I was just trying to give others the opportunity to open their mind. Personally, I didn't care. In fact I thought it was cool that she could pull it off and had she been able to get away with it, we'd be one step closer to a race-less society because if everyone would have said, 'who cares' ... no one would have. But no, folks have to say race is important and you can't have a Caucasian leading a state's NAACP regardless of her education, qualifications and attitudes. That simply is saying - We got to keep people

Actually, the story alludes to 'staff' but an entity of this complexity will likely not have an adequate staff for the challenge. First, don't expect pampered billionaires to provide muscle for security. So how many 'security staff' will be involved? These, incidentally may be personal security staff - i.e. provided by the families. There will also have to be staff - i.e. staff that do hair, massages ... just about everyone but the gardener I suppose. But then there is the maintenance of the facility - who will rebuild the diesel power generator or maintain the sewerage and septi

Actually, we don't know the full story and may not for a while. Could it be the woman was a journalist or novelist wanting to write a first person tome on the experience ... This is not unheard of, you know. Oscar's 'best film' of 1947 is the story of a journalist who poses as a Jew and writes of the way that he was treated in the movie "Gentleman's Agreement." Alternately, the ruse could have been for academic reasons as in gaining experience for a phd or masters thesis. Or maybe it was a bet or better yet, a bet with mom and pop who are closet racists who bet she couldn't be acc

This is a common view but is it the truth? Anyone keeping up with statistics - the number of murders per 100,000 Americans - soon recognizes that crime, while not at 1950s levels, dropped and dropped dramatically - by half - over a decade ago and doesn't appear to be headed back to the heights that nation experienced in the 1970-80s and early 1990s. We all know there are forces in today's society that want a surveillance state. There are efforts to call a constitutional convention and they want to make it even easier to put people in jail (especially now that much of the incarcerat

The 'law and order' movement was basically a bi-partisan effort (Zell Miller's two strikes you're out sentencing guidelines was roughly contemporary with GHWB's Willie Horton slam) but both come from conservative threads which emphasize referring issues to the criminal justice system. Both Democrats and Republicans over the years have sought support of the NRA and gun owners ... and making guns including assault weapons widely available as a constitutional right ... and promoting their ownership ... is how and why those body-armored bank robbers with just such weaponry were able to hold o

Rocky's mom: While the militarization of police is a real concern, that incident back in 1997 was an eye opener. Up-arming police has been a necessity because of the wide availability of assault weapons and body armor to everyone. The police initially were in favor of gun control efforts to limit the availability of assault weapons which left more resources to promote a virtuous circle - i.e. investment in things other than violence suppression. That is because investment in a violence suppression is a vicious circle ... and one that the merchants of death promote. Guns everyw

I so love the small government proponents who in the next breath claim the government is nearly always justified in killing citizens. I have no doubt that some shootings are justified but the spate of shootings that have left black men, some naked and some unarmed, dead contrasts with the care and respect for life that others experience. To wit: I applaud and praise the restraint showed by LEO in this case of Mr. Marchetta and I would pray that all citizens would be treated with the same respect. Unfortunately, the statistics and public record seems to suggest they are not.

Published on May 17, 2012 Via Business Insider: "As the war over income inequality wages on, super-rich Seattle entrepreneur Nick Hanauer has been raising the hackles of his fellow 1-percenters, espousing the contrarian argument that rich people don't actually create jobs. The position is controversial — so much so that TED is refusing to post a talk that Hanauer gave on the subject. National Journal reports today that TED officials decided not to put Hanauer's March 1 speech up online after deeming his remarks "too politically controversial" for the site...". Paulding man missing; last seen at DoubleTree Hotel in Atlanta Gerald LeVert “Vert” Dunn B/M was last seen leaving the DoubleTree (by Hilton) Hotel in downtown Atlanta on Thursday June 4, 2015. He has not been seen or heard from since then. The 24-year old black man is described as being six foot tall, 170lbs with a short haircut and a basketball tattoo on his upper arm. His aunt, with whom he resides, reported him missing on June 8, 2015. Dunn is also a recent graduate of Morehouse University. Since he went missing from the City of Atlanta, they (Atlanta PD) a

Actually, I agree with you on a lot of this. I also think that there is a lot of noise surrounding this incident that confuses the issue in a variety of ways. Here are two youtubes that at least give us some 'eye witness' accounts, not that they are terrifically consistent. The first appears to be from a white teen who was at the pool party. The next one from CNN includes interviews with one of the white parents as well as one of the kids who was at the party. Notably, she says that there were kids being kids and trying to 'crash' the party. No where in these is a s

I understand ugadawgs98 ... But in retrospect ... was that a good idea??? Let's see the fallout ... cop suspended and resigned; bank contract employee terminated; teacher terminated ... town held up to ridicule ... when it could all be solved with a couple of dollars worth of Baby Ruth candy bars in the pool. pubby

I've not heard the 911 calls nor have the dispatch reports been released to my knowledge. The way those communications are characterized often will make all the difference in the world in the nature of how things happen. Personally, the idea that the property rights of the residents are so important that they would risk assault on the facility by armed personnel is really the issue. Not being one of those who elevates the rights of property above humanity, I would have let them have their party and then taken actions - probably a lawsuit against the organizers that made sure they

A lot of folks confuse median income with average income or other statistics. The median income is the income level in which half the population earns more and half earns less. To wit, the median income in this example town of 1000 households is $50,000yr. 490 people in this town live in households with $2,000/yr income, 500 people have an income of $50,000 and 10 have an income $2,000,000,000. The median income is $50,000 because the guy whose income is #500, has the median income. A similar town with a median income of $10,000 might have 400 people with a $2,000/yr income; 200 wi
