  1. Let me get this straight? You are an absolutist on the first amendment and believe that free speech extends to commercial products meaning, of course, that the tobacco/cigarette manufacturers can legally claim that cigarettes are good for you. And, since money is speech and speech is free, they are fully within their rights to advertise their product on the Saturday morning comics aimed at kids using cartoon characters smoking Camels. That is unfettered commercial free speech ... and don't say that corporations and businesses won't do that because they have. pubby the video i

  3. Before Henry Ford developed the assembly line for his Model T, there was a car industry that didn't employ very many folks and most folks still walked, took a trolly or rode a horse. There has always been a highly profitable market catering to the wealthy but mass markets where 70 out of 100 Americans own an automobile instead of one in a hundred is where the jobs come. I mean you don't build a factory and employ 20,000 autoworkers to build a one-off custom automobile. Instead, you build a machine shop and hire five smart guys to build it. The point that Nick Hanauer makes is that
  4. I believe the order, issued by a commission on par, nationally, with the FTC, bars them from using their position of refusing service to promote a business of public accommodation. It would be similar to a real estate company naming its self "White's Only Realty Company" and getting exclusive listings for suburban developments in direct violation of the open housing laws. To wit, the gag order is not as universal as you suggest and is legally only applicable in terms of commercial speech. Now, what constitutes commercial speech may be a bit vague ... but I suspect that it would inclu
  5. I appreciate your sentiments NC-17: No, not everything has to be about sex or politics. Lets talk about how the University of Mississippi ended up with a Bear in slacks, a blazer and Panama hat as a mascot. Oh the twists and turns pubby
  6. No, they banned it because the message - that the ultra-rich are not job-creators - and the rest 'takers' attacks those on the right who do control significant amounts of money and, in the current time, complain and withhold support from institutions that challenge their false meme. It is the emperor has no clothes kind of thing. Nick Hanauer is in the role of the kid who says "the emperor is naked" ... and TED, in this case, says no, he has the finest, most elegant, cloth imaginable and how dare you point that out. Yes, if you point out the absurdity and destroy the meme that the ultra

Low: #1: Just celebrated my 28th wedding anniversary. #2: Running for office as a Democrat and challenging the bigots on this forum is neither prim, fastidious or excessively cautious in the 19th most conservative county in the USA. 8. I missed this 'new topic' ... so I'm reposting what I said in the other. There is really nothing new here although having been there I feel more hopeful than I would otherwise.
  9. I just visited with Melissa at the hospital. I had hoped to find Thad a bit more chipper but as I was on my way, Melissa texted me that he had yet another turn for the worse. Apparently he had some seizures this morning and his heart stopped in the midst of the episode ... but the doctors were able to stabilize his vitals after they worked on him. They've moved him back to ICU and they've lowered his blood temperature and induced a coma to protect his mental faculties. They expect him to remain in the induced coma until tomorrow about noon. At that point they'll know if he has suffered

  11. I just got through reading the AJC article on this same case. Did the wsbtv video touch on Sonny Perdue's willingness to go low to appoint an ambitious woman as the DA in a deal to save the two cops chops. Oh, that one cop already has two knotches on his gun's handle, if he gets three, he may deserve a Dexter episode. pubby

  14. Hiram, Georgia – July 2, 2015– Tomorrow, July 3rd, the City of Hiram is welcoming residents and visitors to come celebrate our nation’s independence with a boom – or as we call it, “Red, White and Boom”. Ben Strickland, Sr. Memorial Park will open at 5:00 for the “Red, White and Boom” and festivities will officially kick-off at 6:00 pm. The park opens at 5:00 and admission is free. Prior to the fireworks show, there will be vendors located throughout the park offering food and refreshments for sale. While we prefer our residents and visitors patronize the local vendors and support the
  15. DVBP: The image of the housing alternatives is stark. What it fails to recognize is that women are the fastest growing group of inmates and the good old USA is number one in locking them up at an even faster rate than men. Worldwide, the latest figures are that the US with 5 percent of the population has under lock and key fully 25 percent of the world's inmates. My understanding is that works out to 21% of the men (worldwide) and 33% of the women. I think one of the things most folks overlook when the judicial system enters one's life is that the impact of what is done to the pr
  16. DVBP: I recognize your belief that injustice is pervasive in the family courts but I think, frankly, that injustice is much broader a problem. I do think that our approach to the entire criminal justice system is in need of a massive overhaul in so many ways ... and that the problems you and others in family law have encountered need to be included in an overall overhaul of the system. Some of the reading that I was doing in regard to the response to your comments here have opened the door to what appears to be a much broader movement to rationalize a system of justice that has been d
  17. Be aware that if you are in the company of a person wearing an ankle bracelet as a condition of bail ... someone may be listening and recording your conversation. This was discovered by an attorney who came to understand that the client attorney privileged conversations may have been overheard by functionaries of the private company that administers the bracelets for the courts. This is because the bracelets contain compete GPS capable cell phones that have the capability of initiating a call from the monitoring agency both with a notice and without. Here is the story on Thecrimerepor
  18. Actually, I think the real outcome here will be hiring of people ... It has been cheaper to order the lower level manager to work 60, 70 hours a week (at no increase in pay/cost) than to hire hourly wage workers, particularly in retail establishments. By forcing overtime pay in those circumstances, the logical thing to do is to hire part time or move some part timers or even increase the hours of those who were hourly to cover the time off the managers will now get that they'll be compensated. I suspect the data on the likely abuse of the overtime exemption was at the root of this issue a
  19. ---- YOU JUST MIGHT WANT TO KNOW………… ... That students, teachers and even guests on the campuses at Paulding's schools are being directed to keep all forms of tobacco products off campus and away from bus stops, etc. including cigarette look-a-like products like e-cigarettes and various vaping tools ... especially those that look like joints and hookahs. Yes, the rule that any student who is found or possess tobacco products on any school campus or District property will be disciplined as outlined in the Paulding County Board of Education Policy JD, Student Discipline. 20. The Washington Post reported today that they have compiled information documenting 461 police involved shooting deaths so far this year and that of those, 123 or over 25% were confirmed deaths of those who were mentally ill or undergoing extreme mental stress. The website "The Crime Report" noted in their review of the article: Among the issues pointed out was that this number "461" is higher than any 'full year' figure of officer shooting deaths as reported by the FBI crime statistics, suggesting, of course, the long term inaccuracy of the FBI voluntary reporting system. In rega
  21. On June 29, 2015 at approximately 7:36 p.m., the City of Hiram Police Department responded to a person shot call at 465 Watts Road. The suspect was apprehended as he attempted to flee the scene and is currently in custody. The victim has been identified as Joseph Norman Duguay, W/M, 46 yoa.
