I'm so sorry, friend. I'm guessing that she was struggling way before this happened, and you did the best you could to help, but once it started eroding your relationships, you had little choice than to do what you did, knowing you needed to preserve your own family. As much as it hurts, sometimes you have to know that you did all you could, and it wasn't what would fill her empty spot. It's not your fault. Personally, I was glad to hear that the kids were offered this "deal." It's not easy to do 400 hrs of community service in 12 months, I'd guess. But to me, this deal seems very fair. There is an accountability factor. There is a bit of pain and discomfort and inconvenience, as there should be.
