  1. What is the story with the old house on the corner of Hiram-Sudie and Davis Mill (at the stop sign)? It has not looked lived in for years. Now there seems to be some fixing up going on. I love old houses and it always made me sad that this house appeared to be a wonderful family home at one time, but not cared for over the years. Sorry if this has been discussed before. I couldn't find it.
  2. For a visit that short, you don't need a car! They are crazy drivers up there! Think driving on the shoulder on 400 from Cumming to Atlanta at rush hour is bad, get on 128 in Boston and that is the fast lane! The T will take you everywhere you would need to go. I am not a baseball fan, but the park is cool. Just go see it and skip the arm and a leg for tickets. I personally like the Freedom Trail if you are into history and self guided tours. Walk the cobblestone streets in Beacon Hill and throw some rocks at my Aunt's house. Go to the North End for the best Italian and Cannolis know t
  3. I have several works in progress, but none are progressing real fast. I am knitting a sweater for my son from a friend's wool I bought last summer. I have front and back done, but need to finish it with sleeves and neck. I have several wine bottles cut, but have yet to complete them into candle lanterns like intended. And lastly, I have 2 dresses cut for the friend who has the sheep, but still have to sew them! Maybe if I focused on one thing....
  4. Have you been to California? How many things are required to be labeled just as a warning for California residents? Have you seen the cost of living in California? I would not put a lot of faith in a one lone researcher's study like you are quoting. Check out some other sources and then see where things stand. Here is a link to a Gallup Poll article about Unions and their effect on the economy: My link
  5. A partial payment is an understatement! My Dad worked for Bethlehem Steel for 25 years in their coal mining division. He was forced to retire at the age of 48 (yes, hired right after Grad School) when they did away with so many senior positions but kept the union miners. He still had many skills and many years of work left in him, so he was lucky enough to buy into a small local engineering firm. In 2001, Bethlehem Steel filed for bankruptcy and he lost all benefits that had been guaranteed him for so long. My Mom got breast cancer and if it wasn't for his group health plan where he was w
  6. Who took my Dad's pension after 25 years with the same company? The Union workers who were making more than he was as an Engineer with a Master's Degree. The Steel Industry has changed since the 1930's as have government regulations (OSHA)and there is no way our country could continue to pay the wages these people expected in their Union jobs. Thus, the big company my Dad was dedicated to, where his job was to help protect the very same union workers that drove the company to the ground, went belly up and his pension is in the government hands. His check won't even cover groceries. He is
  7. My MIL was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. My FIL stood by her and was very attentive and did a lot for her and with her until she could do no more. For him, that was the end. She had another rough 2 mo before she passed, but he went back to work, which required a lot of traveling. He hired in home care for her, but was not there much even when he was home from business trips. After she passed, he quickly moved on. I thought it was odd, but in reality, she died to him when she was no longer the active and fun person he had married. He did not want to remember the bad, but yet remember
  8. I blog and use blogger. It is easy and gives me an outlet to voice some of the things I see and cannot contain, but are too long for fb. Here is my blog: My link
  9. It was a zoning variance hearing not a hearing of charges brought against me. The Zoning and Planning board sent me a letter and gave me 10 days to get rid of the chickens before I faced a fine. I filed for a variance to change the easements so I could keep them. It was not cheap. Involved a survey (rush put on it) and then a fee to even be heard by the board.
  10. Oh yes it was!! You can look it up on the County Website, Planning and Zoning Division.
  11. I suggested this not know all the background. I had a neighbor report me to the Marshall's office over fenced and contained chickens (laying hens). They never talked to me about them and they never showed at my hearing. They did it out of spite and it cost me a ton of $$$ to keep my pets. A small flock of 6 laying hens are not noisy, odor producing, or harmful. The very confusing thing is that the code on your tax bill is not how you are classified when it comes to zoning. My tax bill has me listed as R-3 but there is no such zone in the county. All the codes from R-2 apply to R-3 t
  12. Have you thought about talking with them before taking it to the Marshall's office? They can find out who reported them and then also file for a variance.
  13. Let's think about this..... 3 stores have been there and FAILED!! What bank keeps loaning these chains money to open in a location where other much bigger companies have already failed!! I want their business plan!
  14. To each their own. I nursed both my kids and weaned my daughter when she was 11 mo. old by leaving for the weekend. I was also 7 mo. pregnant with #2 and it was too much. I know there are women who tandem nurse kids, but not me. I was pregnant or nursing for 3+ years straight. All I really wanted was to be done and not have a kid sucking the life out of me! My son self weaned at 8 mo due to an ear infection and the fact that he learned he could get that stuff put in a sippy cup and down it in 2 minutes flat instead of having to lay down and take his time. I pumped until he was 11 mo. ol
  15. Exactly my thoughts! Are they going to post signs on every road where you cross into the county so people who are "just passing thru" know their law is different than all other parts of the state?
  16. My advice....don't waste your money. I did it with #1 and thought it was so cool. I can't even tell you where the images are 4 yrs later. It was a huge waste that could have gone to diapers! Plus, it freaked my husband out because there are shadows and he was convinced there was an issue. There was not, but there is no explaining it at those places because they are not doctors.
  17. Most people who want to keep chickens DO NOT want a rooster. There are numerous cities that allow for the keeping of backyard chickens and not roosters. The City of Atlanta being one of them as well as NYC, LA, Portland, and Seattle. Our county's regulations are rather old and so many people are uninformed about things in regards to small flocks like mine. I know you heard more about the chicken man, but I just wanted to point out that backyard growing and self supporting is a way that many could benefit and educate while providing for themselves instead of relying on others. Some ot
  18. My variance was granted!!
  19. Late notice, but my hearing is tonight at 7pm at the new county complex. I am the only one on the agenda.
  20. I worked as a nanny for 2.5 years in Boston for 2 doctors. They paid well, but pay isn't always everything. I did a ton for them and they tended to undo half of the stuff I worked hard on in just the one full day off a week I got. I stayed on for so long for the kids. They were sweet kids that were ignored a lot by their parents. Broke the paci habit so many times to have them just finally give it back at 8pm on Sunday because they couldn't deal with their own kid anymore.
  21. We had PT and Speech thru Babies Can't Wait. My son was a W sitter and was not walking at his 18mo. check. We were told that gross motor skills often need to come for fine motor skills to kick in. (Walking is gross and talking is fine.) He was walking at 22mo and started talking in full sentences at about 25 mo. Some of the things we learned were that we were talking for him (or his older sister was). We had to get him to express himself. "Do you want an apple or a banana?" "Do you want the blue shirt or the green shirt?" "Do you want to play trucks or play blocks?" We were not to se
  22. Here's my data against the article: I am 37 yrs old. I was spanked more than I care to remember. I have never been in real trouble. I scored a 1420 on my SAT, graduated with honors from Washington & Jefferson College and have a master's degree. My sister is 41 and was also spanked. I don't remember her SAT scores, but it was higher than mine, because I took them 4 times to try to beat her score! She graduated with honors from Hamilton College and holds a Master's from UCSD in statistics. She is a teacher at a fancy private school now.
  23. We walk there often as well and do a mix of the biking trails and the walking trails (unpaved). I just wish others would read the signs and follow the directionals for their activity on the day of the week when they are there. Walkers and bikers are to go opposite ways from each other. We had 2 bikers come up behind us going the wrong way. Scared my little boy a little. It is clearly marker for bikers which way they should enter.
  24. BodyPlex on 278 has a class just for seniors. Silver Sneakers on MWF at 10:45 am. I see lots of the participants on the treadmills and elipticals before or after the class.
  25. I am done after the cut was made. I had a personal connection to Adam Brock and he did not make it. He grew up a mile up the road from me. My Mom taught him in school. His sister lives across the street from my parents now. I don't think he had the "radio fag" and "pop" appeal all the others showed. He is an old soul in a young body.
