The education of our kids is not the place to look to cut waste. There are studies all over the place that show that retention is higher in students on more of a "balanced" school year. People are forever complaining about text scores in Georgia and in Paulding ...so why do our elected officials catch so much grief for trying something to better the education of our kids? Is there a need for spending cuts? of course. But just assuming that it's going to be deeper than expected and making changes that could be considered detrimental to our kids before we know if they are really needed seem

I actually realized that may have been what you were doing after I posted.

Do you suppose it is possible that when they started our calendar discussions our local officials may not have known how deep the state cuts were going to be? I don't honestly know the answer but it seems that even many at the state level are realizing it's going to be deeper than expected.

How do you figure that takes 10 days off the year? That's only 5 days and they started the year 5 days earlier to offset it.

4-Day School Weeks Under Consideration In Georgia

I'll have to find the link again ... I was just reading the other day that 2010 proceeds are notably up over 2009 numbers. I'll share it when I find it again. -
I'd make a special trip (or trips) for key lime or irish coffee cupcakes.

Certainly no harm in going to the administrators with the idea. Thanks MrsB

Somebody want to give me the short and sweet of what this is about? I don't watch the video posts here.

4-Day School Weeks Under Consideration In Georgia

Hope and Pre-K are both fully funded by lottery proceeds and those proceeds are on the increase, unlike most everything else. -
It's not a "true" 180 days ... it's instructional hours. They'd just add more time to each day to get up to the required hours.
-
It would be easy enough to adjust the calendar. Add a 3 day weekend here and there and change a couple 3 day weekends to 4 day and you've got your 10 days before you know it. Then you add a few minutes on the end of each day to make up the time and you're set.
-
I don't like the idea but we're going to have to start making some hard choices to meet budget cuts. They didn't get into too much detail but I have to assume they would add time to the other days to make up the time requirement but save money by not having the schools open those 10 other days.

So about how much a year is that? Average?

Not just them ... that's the new price.

Stress Claim Denied for Connecticut Cop Who Shot Chimpanzee

I guess when he chose law enforcement as a career he thought he'd be seeing nothing but the nicest and safest of the world. If it got to him that bad, he should be in a different career. And I can not believe that there is anyone supporting the legislation to change the law to include deadly force against animals incidents. -

The Six Flags financial status argument is ridiculous. They've been in trouble for years. -
Stress Claim Denied for Connecticut Cop Who Shot Chimpanzee

I'm having a hard time with this. (Not with the fact that his claim was denied.) An officer who shot and killed a 200-pound chimpanzee last year after it mauled a woman has been denied an insurance claim for post-traumatic stress disorder because state law only applies to police shootings of people. State Sen. Andrew McDonald introduced legislation Tuesday — the one-year anniversary of the attack — designed to help the officer get workers' compensation coverage. The bill would change the law to allow claims for mental or emotional impairment when officers are required to use dead -
How exactly should someone act when they are arrested?

He's made it quite clear that he's not able to hide his bias. No point expecting him to. -
Good for you, knowing your limits and priorities, etc. He probably smiled because he knows full well what will happen ... even when you win, there's no way to ensure any $ from him. Thanks for sharing your experience. Not a chance that I would ever use them.

Tell them that you have every intention of pursuing the matter through the courts, if need be. If they didn't warn you or have you sign anything stating that the cushoins could become damaged during the cleaning, they owe you for ruining your property.

But they are trying to speak for us ... there are other options out there but PBO and the left side are absolutely dead set against anything other than getting theirs through. The stockholders have made it clear that they do not want the public option and more and more they are making it clear that they do not want this current plan, period. Instead of listening to them, PBO and company are looking for a way to force their plan through. It has become increasingly clear that they don't give a rat's butt about a good plan. They just want to "win." Many of them have even said that this plan

I have a much bigger issue with folks tossing their fast food trash out the window. Or dumping their old appliances or tires along the side of the road. For those of you who smoke but don't have an ashtray in your vehicle ... get one. Why should that be everyone else's problem? Don't like the smell in your vehicle, don't smoke in it. Why should it be everyone's problem? And yes, I used to smoke.

I'm not ok with if the "higher execs" shove their policy down the throats of the stockholders who have clearly expressed their displeasure with said policy. That sort of thing gets "higher execs" fired.
