In 2013 we paid roughly $90 for fire protection in Cobb County. It was on the tax bill. How is this in TN any different? Is it billed separately from the tax bill? Is there an amount ON the tax bill and then this is separate? I just simply don't understand the problem with it. Here is the amount we paid for FIRE PROTECTION, per our tax bill, in 2013: 89.17

What tax penalty for not having health insurance? Under $100 a year? What a joke. Pay $100 a year penalty or pay several hundred a month for health insurance, plus an average of $500 a month for deductible.

Got you and your dad in my prayers Laurie.

Absolutely! Take a look at your tax bill and see what you're paying for fire protection. You might be surprised.

They do the same thing here except the volunteers are strictly volunteer firefighters in the VFDs. Only the cities (of which there are three here in the county) and the community down at the beach have paid firefighters. My daughter will pay about $80 for fire protection when she gets her tax bill in a few months. We pay about $100 a year in city property taxes which includes fire protection, police protection and our awesome parks.

Is that area protected by a volunteer fire department? Here, you are assessed an amount for fire protection based on the volunteer fire department that serves your area. We're in the city limits and have fire protection from them, So we don't pay anything to the volunteer fire department. My daughter lives about 20 miles away and pays almost as much to the local volunteer fire department as we do in city taxes. Both are less than what is quoted in the original post. I have no problem paying for fire protection.

Perhaps it's time for a topic on a lighter note.

I was about 12 or 13 when I spent the night at my grandmother's house with a second cousin and one of her friends. They wanted to have a seance. I was up for it though I was pretty much a wuzz. Nothing happened. Well, nothing happened until about a half hour after we finally went to bed. Suddenly we heard a loud bang right in the room with us. Nobody would get up to see what it was. The next morning we awoke to find that something had fallen off my grandmother's dresser. The odd thing about it was the item was on the backside of the dresser but it was lying in front of the dresser in -
Remember the story about disfigured girl getting thrown out of KFC?

I know. The story flung a KFC craving on me, too. If only they would bring back the apple cobbler on the buffet, I'd be there today. -

Whenever I hear about a server who gets a nasty note on a receipt, a patron who is thrown out of a restaurant for no good reason or anything else having to do with "outrageous" treatment by someone like that I just go That said, I do know that servers and other employees in restaurants can be very thoughtless. -
Hey thanks for the reminder. Golf tournament comes on in a couple of hours.

Thanks. I went back and read it again and saw that. I must have read it initially not long after taking my pain meds.

And how and why did the person end up at Spring and Main?

It works the same way Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac work. BTW, I think at one time I had told you about a book I was reading about the financial collapse of 2008. Maybe not. I don't think I bought the book until I moved. Anywho, it's a great book and it clarifies who and what had a part in the collapse. -
These days it is almost routine for a young person, say under 25, to get arrested for something. They act like it is no big deal. "Yeah, I've only been arrested three times". They act like it's no big deal because nowadays it IS not big deal to get arrested. We have become too desensitized to crime. We're fascinated by it, hoping against hope that we won't be next. We also expect young people to have an arrest record. We spoke with a young man on Saturday who said four friends of his were arrested on Friday night. He is signing papers on Thursday to join the Army so he can get away fro

Ha!! I watch less than 4 hours of TV a week. I watch less than 10 minutes of news a month. There is NOTHING on TV worth watching. I don't even get a newspaper. I have zero interest in reading about who shot who, who abused their kid, who snapped and went on a crime spree. I would much rather get out on the river, go sit under a pavilion at the park, get granddaughter hugs, read a book. I've known too much murder, of friends and family members, to want to participate in voyeurism at someone else's pain. Been there, done that, got the t-shirt. To blame most of the violence on menta

I gotta say it. I TOTALLY agree with Rockysmom on this.

Yep, Libbie Mapp. My dad knew her from the time they were kids. She is buried at New Smyrna Cemetery, the same one that my parents are buried in. Vaguely remember the other one but I do remember it,.
-
We both knew the same woman who was murdered in Smyrna when we were kids, or at least our parents knew her. I mean the whole town knew about it, knew who the suspect was, who the victim was. It certainly wasn't hush-hush.

Actually, we didn't have the media telling what to believe back then. They only reported the news, not made it up as they went, depending on whether or not it was ratings month or how many papers they sold.

When we were packing to move, we discovered that we were missing quite a few things. We KNEW we had not gotten rid of them because almost all of them had sentimental value but little monetary value. We are pretty sure we know who took them but since we don't know when they were taken, just that they were, it's difficult to do anything about it. I grew up on Church Road. We left the front door open at night in the summer and *might* lock the screen door. Like that would deter anyone. Anyway, in the 23 years I was living in that house, one thing was stolen. That was a .22 revolver that

If the media didn't tell you that there were more crazies out there, that crime was bad, that kidnappings and carjackings occurred, would you know it?
-
The fact that we are heard and listened to down here is part of why we wanted to move here. Everyone is allowed to voice their opinion and it be taken as a possibility. We do have input in what happens to us. You can't please everyone and the feds make sure they don't please many people. There has been a big protest against the federal government here about, of all things, fish. Red snapper, to be exact. Commercial fishermen are allowed to fish virtually all they want to, but the average guy only has 9 days to fish for them. And during the other 356 +/- days of the year, the sport

I'm glad they reopened. It sure looked like they weren't going to when I was by there the last time. That was over a year ago, though. Really missed the one in Dallas when I was working there.
-
Did they reopen these two? The one in Dallas has been closed for several years. The last time I was in Douglasville, over a year ago, it looked like they might not reopen.
