  1. I can't blame you for planning a return visit. That place looked awesome!
  2. WOW!!!!!!!!!!!! A hot tub IN the room! Gotta love that. Got to keep that in mind even if we don't get to go anywhere for our anniversary. That's nice, with a capital N!
  3. Considering it will be me and hubby of 32 years and NO KIDS, doubt we will need the petting zoo. Will keep that in mind for the grandkids in a couple of years.
  4. I looked at their website and fell in LOVE!! Nice chalets, good prices and who can argue with a Jacuzzi! Now to get hubby on board with it.
  5. I remember going there years ago. The food was fantastic!
  6. Hubby lived in Cleveland when we met, so he's very familiar with that area. I'll check it out! Thanks.
  7. Man, I haven't been up there in 30 years!! I'll have to check that out! Thanks for the suggestion. Never thought about that place!
  8. Our anniversary is coming up next weekend and we had originally planned to go to Tennessee and rent a cabin on the Hiwassee River. That doesn't look like it is going to happen now. Then we planned to go to Pensacola or Gulf Shores. Well, unless my husband's back gets significantly better between now and Wednesday, THAT isn't going to happen either. He doesn't need to be driving that long. So we're thinking something closer to home. We would like a place preferably within about an hour or two from here. It can be a cabin, a hotel, a house, a resort or anything. We would prefer some
  9. Yesssssssssssss. And on that note, if anyone is interested in buying The Bean, let me know. I have one I'm more than willing to part with. And also an older model Health Rider.
  10. I received the first notice on my receipt a couple of weeks ago. Later, I got the phone call. Glad to know they are letting customers know. The bad thing is the item I purchased (onion soup mix) had already been partially used.
  11. Most people only care about how much they are getting back without realizing how much they are paying. And yes, you are still paying taxes, most of the time, even if you get a refund and EIC. That's the little line called "total tax". It's about halfway down the page on page two of the 1040. Take a look. You'd be amazed! If you "get back" $1200 a year, that's $100 a month that you could have each month, not just for a week or two in the late winter. The history of withhold taxes is quite interesting. It was done because people found it difficult to pay the taxes once a year. Out
  12. If you get a refund, you're giving the government an interest free loan. Refunds are BAD! Having to pay a small amount when you file your taxes is much, much better. I can't believe we're getting a refund. I hate that!! And I am dead serious about that. If you're getting a small refund (at most a couple of hundred dollars) or having to pay a small amount (at most a couple of hundred dollars) you're doing it right. Don't change. The amount you should deduct is what the taxes were the previous year if your income has not changed drastically for the current year. The Making Work
  13. Your co-worker who does not get the EIC. I hate refunds. Pissed because I'm getting one this year. I should have done a better job of knowing what my liability would have been and not loaned that much money to the government interest free. The "Making Work Pay" credit was what screwed up my estimate! Otherwise, we would have just about broken even.
  14. I got one of those e-mails. Fortunately, it went to an e-mail that is NOT associated with Facebook. It went to what I call the biggest spammer in the world--AOL.
  15. I didn't write the law. I understand that the amounts refunded are in excess of SS. Been doing this for 15 years, got the hang of it but again, just saying what the IRS website says about it. No such thing as "free money". It is SOMEONE'S money.
  16. I think it is based on no children, one child, two children and three children but not four, five or more. And there is the EIC, the child tax credit and the tax refund. Three different creatures but come together in one payment. I do!!!!!!!!
  17. I understand that. I always wondered how they came up with those amounts, too. The amounts you get back in EIC are pretty high.
  18. From the IRS website: The Earned Income Tax Credit or the EITC is a refundable federal income tax credit for low to moderate income working individuals and families. Congress originally approved the tax credit legislation in 1975 in part to offset the burden of social security taxes and to provide an incentive to work. When the EITC exceeds the amount of taxes owed, it results in a tax refund to those who claim and qualify for the credit. To qualify, taxpayers must meet certain requirements and file a tax return, even if they did not earn enough money to have a filing requirement. Ba
  19. As the name implies, if there is NO earned income, there is NO earned income CREDIT. You HAVE to have earned income in order to get it. Not all income qualifies as earned income, either. FYI, it is essentially a "refund" of Social Security taxes withheld on earned income. If it is "wrong" to use your EIC for a vacation, it is also "wrong" to use your tax refund for the same reason. It's YOUR money.
  20. I guess I'm OCD when it comes to receipts because of my occupation for the last 15 years and the 10 years before that of being a business owner who didn't want to get in trouble with the IRS. I SAVE all receipts. My husband said something a couple of months ago about not having any idea "what you spend your money on". So, I reached over next to my desk, grabbed a large manila envelope and two small gift bags stuffed full of receipts and said "here, take a look". For some strange reason, he said "never mind". Next time he wants to know what I spend my money on I think it migh
  21. I've worked in an accounting office since 1995 but for the better part of the 17 years before that, I was a medical transcriptionist, receptionist and bookkeeper (the receptionist and bookkeeper was not necessarily in medical offices). I've been a cashier, too. I'd have to take a pay cut for almost any of those jobs but would do so willingly if necessary. Hubby and I are fortunate in that his job doesn't require him to work a lot of hours but he gets paid handsomely for the time. He can always rattle a few cages to scare up some work if things get lean. We are very blessed that he
  22. They must have moved out of my house and into yours.
  23. Not sure how it is done here and it may vary from HOA to HOA but when we bought lots in Florida in a subdivision with a HOA the dues were prorated just like the taxes and insurance. At any rate, I think you're probably required to pay the full amount, regardless of how long you intend to be in your home. The proration will be taken care of on the closing statement.
