The desire to get as much as you can comes into play, too. Why buy a $100,000 house with a fixed rate mortgage over 30 years when you can buy a $250,000 house with an interest only loan and pay about the same? Works great when home prices go up, but you're kind of screwed when they fall. And what agent/mortgage broker will try to talk you into the lower priced house? None I've ever dealt with. Wait, maybe one. The one who talked us out of buying the house we rented in Mableton. He said for us to move from here back to there would be moving down. I could hug that man!! He was so right,

As her grandmother, I worried when she said she was going to DC to college. But I felt her dad, a former Atlanta cop, would have felt it was OK or else he would have said "no, you go to UGA". I just hope this doesn't rattle her and make her afraid or angry. Maybe more aware. I just hate this for her. Not a good way to start off your college experience.

so very true.

No, Obama doesn't need to create jobs. Obama needs to do the appointed duties of the President. Congress needs to do their appointed duties. If everyone in Washington did what they were supposed to do, the nation will be recovering.

Not sure about the insurance. I would think it should cover the car at least but not likely the personal items inside. Apparently, her roommate's stuff was in the car, too. I don't know. I think she's still in shock about it. It happens. From the way she talks, they hadn't moved in yet. Literally, just got there last night.

My oldest granddaughter moved to Washington, DC to attend college. They left Atlanta yesterday morning. Her car was stolen TODAY, along with some of the stuff she needed for her dorm room. Man, that just sucks, doesn't it? Not even in town for 24 hours yet and a crime victim. This is a kid who used to ride MARTA from the College Park station to Sandy Springs to go to school. Knowing her dad, he's ready for her to come back to Atlanta, where it's safe. Poor kid. I just hate that for her.

With the government "out of the way" from 2000 through 2008 this is what happened: slowest job growth since the Great Depression the Dow barely moved (sure can't say that recently, can we?) cost of gasoline rose 143% average tuition rose 46% Republicans in Congress (both houses) decreased and coincidentally, the number of Democrats increased median income declined mortgage debt increased 110%. Currently, there are about one million fewer outstanding loans but about one million more foreclosures. unemployment rose from 4% to 5.8%. Last month it was 9.1% povert

Considering how well the last stimulus that was supposed to create jobs was handled, I don't put any faith in a stimulus. Best thing would be for government to get out of the way of job creation.

I don't disagree that the recession won't end until the housing market recovers but making houses easy to get is part of what got this country in the current mess it's in. I blame everyone connected with housing for that little gem of a problem. Everything from the developers to builders to real estate agents to mortgage companies/banks and the home buyers.

You gotta say one thing, Pubby. Pcom has an incredible view of the square. -
Was it? I guess I was spending so much of my time trying to find a job and pay the bills I forgot to take note of that.

I hate being so suspicious of people and their motives but I have been burned before. Good warning, Eym. Good warning. -
Well, crap. I thought maybe you were going to contribute to our house fund. Or at least to the purchase of a stairlift. Wait, I see that it says it is part of a program to eradicate poverty. So, why didn't I get one? Maybe I did and deleted it. I got an e-mail yesterday that said "face it, you need a larger income". Well, duh!

I can't help but have been in the same boat. I finally gave up on using the webcam. If you're going to be around tomorrow afternoon, why don't we try to do a chat? I need to make sure mine works, too.

As I stated later in the thread, my daughter took the young woman to the grocery store and got her some things but was unable to help with the gas. I sent her a gas card. You're right--not in this area, as they both live near Union City. I found out the issue was she had a medical emergency come up with her daughter, missed some work and then by the time she paid what she had to for the prescriptions, she came up short. It was a first time for her but it all stemmed from the medical emergency for her daughter. I feel good about helping her. She truly needed it. You're right about i -
We were not impressed with Eastman's when we went. Way too many people, too hot in there, too crowded and prices weren't even competitive with local shops. Glad to know it was probably just Eastman's with the high prices and not Gun Runners. I still want a Ruger SR9C or Glock 26. Thinking of ordering them online since I can't find a competitive price at a show.

I think it would be really difficult for the state to do this. It would mean changing a TON of laws to classify yard sales as "businesses". It would create much more paperwork than income would be generated.
-
"They" who? Odd that I deal with sales tax and I haven't heard about this.

I think at one time or another we all need some help. I like to help when I can. I would probably help more, if finances allowed me to, if I knew the people were managing what they had efficiently and still needed help. Don't tell me you can't put gas in your car and then buy a video game system. Or tell me you can't pay your electric bill but you just got back from a weekend in Biloxi (and yes, this happened to me). -
Unless you have a resale business, if you're doing this strictly as a yard sale, THERE IS NO SALES TAX COLLECTED BY YOU OR PAID TO THE STATE. Period.
-
That was my experience as well. Then again, I was kind of an outcast in high school. Too nerdy to be cool, too cool to be nerdy and definitely not a cheerleader.
-
Unless you are in the business of having yard sales, items sold are not taxed. I won't go into the rest of the post because it may be beyond the understanding of those not in business.

You're so right PM. Wealth is a person's net worth, expressed as: wealth = assets − liabilities The poor and middle class have fewer assets and more liabilities and therefore, a lower net worth or "wealth".

I guess there is good news on the economic front. I turned down an interview today. Of course, you couldn't PAY me enough to work on Fulton Industrial or the area of Bankhead around 285. I can't remember which place the job is, but it wouldn't matter. Hubby won't let me work in either place.
