  1. You did quite well in the example, I thought. The "government" would like for all jobs to be public sector and none to be private sector. I've never seen a more anti-business administration, not even the goober President. Sometimes I wish I HAD moved to Mexico back when Carter was elected.
  2. I know a painting contractor who did a lot of work for the Department of Defense. That has since gone by the wayside. And with almost no new homes being built in the metro Atlanta area, he doesn't have that to fall back on now.
  3. You got that right! Goes along with that "share the wealth" idea except it's sharing the poverty and not the wealth.
  4. former member said: Oh, I am. I just don't care to concern myself with the day to day stuff of that. In former member's defense, there are a lot of business owners who don't concern themselves with the day to day stuff either. In fact, in all my years in business offices, to find a business owner who DOES know what's going on in the business on a day to day basis, is pretty unusual. I did work for one man who knew HOURLY how the business was doing. He had dual degrees in accounting and business management, though. Most business owners really don't concern themselves with it. They do
  5. So true. I'm glad someone gets it. I do hate to see that companies aren't hiring. I'd like to have been hired while I was out there looking for a job. Everywhere I applied thought $10 an hour was a decent wage for someone with varied experience and excellent skills. Of course, some of those jobs I interviewed for that paid between $8 and $10 an hour, and didn't get, are open once again.
  6. I quit reading spam like that. I just see that it's not from anyone I know and chunk it. Yeah, sure, I have NO idea who you are but I'll gladly loan you $2500.
  7. I guess it comes from struggling to make ends meet, running a couple of businesses and working in an accounting office for 15 years. But you would be amazed at the number of really intelligent people who don't understand the difference between revenue and profit/income and assets.
  8. Just to clarify, my husband and I are FAR from being wealthy. Our 2011 total income will probably come in between $20,000 and $22,000. We are not likely to have ANY taxable income as most of that will be non-taxable income. But as far as the net worth = assets - liabilities equation, we might be considered "wealthy". Hard to think of a "wealthy" person qualifying for earned income credit, huh? We very well might. Income and wealth are too different things. Just as revenue and profit are different things in business.
  9. I have a couple of books by Dean Koontz and a couple by Tess Gerritson. Also a few books by obscure authors. I'll bring them in one day. Might work up a trade for some Debbie Macomber or Dorothea Benton Franks books.
  10. I was happy to finally get by there to meet you. Again. We meet several years ago when I was in the store but I don't think you were on Pcom yet at that time. It's been quite some time. What types of books do you take? I have some I'm sending to a friend but I also have some she wouldn't want or need.
  11. Wealth is a person's net worth, expressed as: wealth = assets − liabilities Using this formula, my husband and I are wealthy. We own two houses, two cars, machinery, a small business, have a modest amount of money in a Money Market account and the only liabilities we have are roughly $1100 in property taxes due in October and $660 in car insurance due in September. I guess we would be in the top percentages because of what we own. Guess what? It's the same way with the truly wealthy people, too. And the reverse is true for the poor. They own little and owe a lot or worse yet, o
  12. The largest lobby in Congress is a lobby for finance, insurance and real estate, spending $4,274,060,331 between 1998 and 2010. That figure does not include campaign contributions. What is that figure??? Four BILLION dollars? If you think that money didn't buy anything, think again. Think long and hard about that. Insurance companies are like 99.9% of major corporations and are shareholder oriented. Not so coincidentally, insurance companies had record profits in 2009. Well, if you believe the President they did. In fact, that was one of the tools he used to get Obamacare passe
  13. Social Security numbers, names and birthdates must be on a tax return in order to claim a dependent or to file jointly. Since 70% of taxpayers file electronically and the information provided is verified before the return is accepted, it is considered a good reference for dependents and spouses. Back in the days before Social Security numbers were required to claim a dependent, I have heard that people claimed their pets. By the time I got in the tax prep business, SS#s were required.
  14. If groups can't get group rates, don't blame the employers. Blame the insurance companies and Congress (aka long arm of insurance companies). Just in the past few years, Congress relaxed the requirements for joining a credit union and now almost everyone is eligible. AGAIN, that is not due to anything your employer or anyone else's employer mandated or prevented. Believe it or not, Postman, if laws prevent an employer from doing something, they CANNOT do it. If laws allow an employer to do something, they usually will. If you really want to lay blame for all of this on an entity, blam
  15. In a state like Georgia, most employers don't give a rat's furry behind about who they fire, good reason, bad reason, no reason. They don't have to have one. As a general rule, the employer has nothing to do with COBRA which is something only an EX employee can receive. It is at that point, between the ex-employee and the insurance company or more precisely, a third party administrator. the whole point of group health insurance policies, "employer" sponsored health insurance, is GROUP rates. Try getting "group" rates without a group. I think it's a moot point to discuss Obamaca
  16. Knowing how the mental health system works, it may have been they felt there was nothing they could do for him or that he wasn't cooperating. One cannot be forced into mental health treatment. I was happy to see the sheriff say he was not happy with the boy's release from juvenile justice or the hospital. Fact is, there was probably nothing the medical community could do to prevent his release. Hindsight in mental health is always 20/20. You're right about it being a tragedy. I'm sure the grandmother and great-grandmother were doing what they felt was best for him. Probably told h
  17. You go to Humphries Hill Road twice a week??? I go at least once a week to see my grandbabies. I ALWAYS take Macland when I go from Powder Springs/home to Dallas. I generally go Hiram Lithia to Pearson to Cleburne Pkwy to Macland and then to Dallas.
  18. Nope. COBRA is not a government benefit. It IS government mandated. And until the last year or so, employers DID benefit from employees being on it. The employers actually subsidized some of the COBRA premium and then got a reduction in their payroll taxes. And I **DO** know this for a fact, both from the ex-employee angle and the employer angle. It was kind of sad that I had to tell my husband's former employer that they had to subsidize our COBRA premium and that they got a tax benefit from it. Somehow their HR person didn't know it. And again, nope, the government will not "offer
  19. Thank goodness I wasn't in any real hurry other than the fact I needed to pee. And I was 12 miles from home!
  20. I knew it was closed but I can't begin to tell you the last time I went anywhere near Hiram/278/92. I NEVER go there. About the closest I'll go is Staples and then I go backroads. I don't even go through there when I go from Powder Springs to Dallas.
  21. I got caught behind a bus dropping off elementary kids at an apartment complex. It was the first stop for the bus and I swear there was only one or two kids left after the apartments.
  22. It's only fair. When Bush was president everything was his fault.
  23. I'd say you don't go to Hiram much! Neither do I and I think it was still open the last time I went by.
  24. Now I'm envious. Our right of way on the neighboring street, a major through street I might add, has not been cut ALL YEAR! And this is the middle of August. What are they waiting for? Frost?
