Funny you ask this. About ten years ago I was active in an Internet group for medical transcriptionists. I made the comment one day that voice recognition software and computers would soon make medical transcription a dying skill. They all blew it off with claims that the software wasn't good enough to produce accurate records (which it still has flaws), that doctors would never use it (but they do), it was too expensive (it is, but apparently it saves more than it costs). They were SURE they would have jobs well into the year 2012 and beyond. Most of them--probably 20 to 25 regulars--no

Douglasville Soldier Coming Home For Last Time

He died so that this group would have the freedom to protest his funeral. Please understand that I believe what they do is despicable but because of his sacrifice as well as the sacrifice of all who have died for their country, this group continues to enjoy the freedom of speech. Freedom of speech is not just for those who share your opinion or those whom you agree with. I went through Douglasville today and every flag I saw was at half-staff. I just couldn't bring myself to go down Rose Avenue toward the funeral home. It's tough enough for me to do that anyway but today would have -
Roadblocks to getting a job in 2011: economy everything needs to be done electronically nobody wants to hire you if you don't have a job, are over 40, have more than one year experience Anyone who thinks these are not real roadblocks to getting a job needs to get out there and try it.

Yep, people who aren't trying to do it know how to do it, don't they? The last TEN times I requested a referral for a job through the DOL I was told the job was no longer available when I applied. The last TWO times, the jobs were NOT listed an hour prior to my request and were still listed more than 24 hours AFTER the notification that the jobs were no longer available. I even contacted the DOL about this and was told a line of BS that if my kid had told me that, I would have punished them for lying. Not much. I've had two interviews in Paulding since July 2010. All my

Odd you say this. I don't live in Paulding, never have. And I AM trying to get out of metro Atlanta. Trying harder than you can possibly understand. FYI, the vast majority of jobs I have applied for and almost without exception interviewed for, have NOT been in Paulding. I've interviewed in Cobb, Douglas, Fulton and Paulding. Sorry, but a positive attitude does not always equate to being hired. And unless you are the only person in the whole damn world who can do what you do, you have no greater odds of getting a job than anyone else does, regardless of how you feel when your

I wanted to add that I realize hiring managers cannot always contact everyone who has interviewed. But if you're ONE small company interviewing TEN people for one position, you CAN make time to call the nine you didn't hire. By not doing so, you may have cost yourself at least nine customers. I know several companies I will never call should I need their service, just based on how they treat potential employees.

You just need to develop a positive attitude and get a job!

Unless you are looking for a job, you have NO clue what it is like out there trying to find one. Even those with terminally chipper attitudes are finding it difficult to get hired ESPECIALLY if you're over 40. About 3 years ago, before the economy REALLY got bad, my husband found himself out of a job for the first time in his adult life. He had excellent skills and applied for everything remotely related to those skills. He would get called in for an interview plenty of times. Once the interviewer took a look at him, a man obviously in his late 50s, they suddenly were no longer inter

I take it you're not over 40 and looking for a job.

Many, many franchises in and around Dallas, Hiram and Powder Springs ARE mom and pop businesses. They just happen to be under the umbrella of a franchised business. The royalties these business owners pay vary greatly. Where I used to work the royalty was considerable. Start up fees for franchises are not cheap, either. These businesses rely on the same customers that independent businesses do. Again, don't avoid doing business with a franchised location thinking they aren't local. Many ARE locally owned and operated. One of my very favorite places to eat in years past was a parti -

I watched the procession on streaming video. Just as when Ryan King's body was brought through downtown Dallas, I cried as I watched Lance Corporal Harper's procession to Whitley Garner Funeral Home. I so wanted to be there in person as my nephew is currently a Marine also from Douglas County and roughly the same age as Lance Corporal Harper. I wanted to be there for all the nephews, nieces, sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, grandsons and granddaughters who have and are serving our country. Thank you one and all for your service. Semper Fi -

Don't forget, even franchises can be "local" businesses as many are individually owned and operated. Don't discount it as being a "big box" store just because it's a franchise. -
Here's a suggestion. And it works for anything whether you're interested in medical billing, being a travel agent or whatever. ASK employers what they suggest. Ask whether or not they use the service. Ask what type of training or experience they require. It does no good to get a top notch education if you can't utilize the skills in the real world.

I did medical transcription for 17 years, about 4 of which I did at home. Unfortunately, the pay rate is pretty much the same now that it was when I got out of it in 1994. I worked for two different doctor groups and loved it. I could almost complete the note before the doctor finished dictating because I knew what they were going to say. When I worked at home, I got the same doctors over and over and learned their styles as well. I worked for one service owner who had no business being a medical transcription service owner because she didn't know her butt from a hole in the ground.

There are plenty of places hiring. Well, if you're 20 and have no experience and are willing to work for minimum wage or slightly above.

I'd find another line of study. Just sayin'

Above all, be supportive of her. Pain pill addiction is a tough road to go, but so is getting off the pills and going through withdrawal. As a friend of mine who has been through withdrawal twice told me when my hubby went through it, don't believe a word she says when she asks for meds. It is also my understanding that the first year, maybe longer, she will have an enhanced reaction to meds if she takes them. Best of luck to her. Keep us updated, please.

LPPT, you are one of the people that we should have more of. BTW, enjoyed the chat the other day.

I mailed a birthday card for my daughter from Bagdad, FL on Thursday. Dropped it in the box in PLENTY of time for it to go out that day. She should have received it at the latest on Saturday. She didn't get it until Monday, two days after her birthday and FOUR days after it was mailed. It's less than a six hour drive to the post office in Bagdad to her house in Austell. Where did that card go to get to her? Iraq? Of course, I am still waiting on those concert tickets I ordered. In 1996.

What a lot of people don't realize is that if you do online bill pay is a check STILL gets mailed out fairly often. My garbage service gets a check. So does the City of Austell, Austell Gas, if I pay for a magazine subscription (generally). And one of my clients pays me through online bill pay but I receive a check in the mail.

When hubby and I purchased two adjoining lots in 2002, we went down to Lowe's and got fence posts and put on all four corners. We sold those lots in 2003 but as recently as this summer we drove by and saw the fence posts were STILL there on the front corners.

I still say that mom knows *EXACTLY* where her baby is and how the baby is doing. Hopefully, the baby is with someone who loves it and cares for it but I doubt that is the case. At any rate, the mom knows. She just saw Casey Anthony be found not guilty of murder and thinks she can do the same thing.
