  1. I was told by the person taking the course that THEY called their school of choice and after researching it the school called them back and said yes they did accept it. I personally did not talk to the school. The person taking the course did personally talk to the school. The school told them yes. I have no reason to doubt what the person told me the school said to them which is yes, they accept the James Madison diploma.
  2. Yep, the accreditation is why they are accepted. I had forgotten the reason. I had been asked to research SACS accredited online courses and that was one of maybe two I found. I, too, would go the GED route but the person I know who is doing it online felt that was their best choice given their situation.
  3. I won't post it publicly. And I don't know for a fact that they accept it, but have been told that they do.
  4. You might want to inform a couple of the local higher education establishments of that fact. I know of at least one local school that DOES in fact accept the James Madison diploma.
  5. It is expensive but if I'm not mistaken it includes EVERYTHING including books. The person I know doing that tried GED classes a couple of times and just felt it was too slow and they lost interest basically. With this, they did one subject in about 2 1/2 weeks, including the "term paper" and everything. They like they can work at their own pace. In fact, they are really excited about finishing up by the end of the summer and then starting school in the fall. They also checked with their school of choice prior to ordering the course to make sure the diploma was accepted. It was but
  6. Yep. This what someone I know is doing: http://www.ashworthcollege.edu/programs/high-school/ It is a diploma and not a GED. Apparently, it is accepted virtually by anyone who accepts a high school diploma.
  7. It's my personal opinion that they did not close it because of not making a profit. I think there were other factors involved. I have *heard* that it was now owned by the bank but the real estate records don't back that up.
  8. Our rental house lost a couple of thousand in value for tax purposes. However, the city of Austell is INCREASING taxes by 28%. So, instead of under $600 combined for city and county, we're likely going to be closer to $700.
  9. I wish it would be taken over by the county. That would be great for the area. The proximity to Cobb, Douglas and Paulding counties make it perfect for a county run facility that would be for anyone in those three counties to enjoy. I never cared for it that much either but I'm not a water person. On the rare occasions I get in the water, I want it to be the Gulf of Mexico. Not at all. It's provided recreation, learning and jobs for many years. It will be missed. My youngest learned to swim at SVB.
  10. Howdy neighbor! I'm exactly 1 mile from SVB. We went a few times one summer when we had season passes. That was years ago when our daughter took swimming lessons over there.
  11. You follow the instructions for filing an appeal, which is probably the same in Paulding as in Cobb. It is basically filling out a form and then awaiting your letter stating that your appeal was denied. Then it gets fun. You then request to go before the Board of Equalization (though it might have a different name in Paulding). Both times--with the form and with the Board--you need PROOF that their figure is wrong. Zillow won't do it. Sorry, but it won't. It isn't terribly accurate. What you need are comparables that have SOLD recently. They need to be comparable, too. If your house
  12. These people at Patch really need to do a little more research into their stories. They stated the reason for the closure was not known. It is closed because the bank foreclosed on it. Had these people at Patch gotten out there a little earlier, they would have seen the sign that said "bank owned". That was up in April, I think.
  13. According to our tax assessments, our house has lost $64,550 in value since 2009. $22,000 of that was since last year's assessment. One of our neighbors has an absolutely beautiful, well maintained, large house. It is the largest house in the neighborhood. It has lost over $116,000 since 2009. WTF?? In 2009, we had the 16th highest assessment on the street (there are only 17 houses). Now we have the 4th. Only ONE of the houses on the street has been foreclosed on since 2009 (there was an earlier one). The really sad part about my neighborhood and the assessments is t
  14. We bought our house in 1978. Another drop in value like we saw this year and it will soon be worth what we paid for it. 34 years ago. We have almost as much in the new value in the windows, sunroom and siding ALONE. Never mind the house, the 25 x 25 building out back, the 50 x 50 concrete pad out back, etc.
  15. You're absolutely correct. You can't go in there and just say "I think this is wrong". You have to have PROOF that their assessment is too high. We are 2 for 3 on appeals. The first time we simply weren't prepared.
  16. FYI, if you think your assessment is unfair, you are free to file an appeal. Instructions should be with the assessment notice.
  17. Some states have higher minimum wage for servers than does Georgia. Florida for instance has a base minimum wage of $4.65 an hour for servers with the overall minimum wage being $7.67. Again, the server MUST be paid minimum wage regardless of what the employer has to pay. Quite frankly, having spent a good deal of time in Florida in years past and this year as well, I have seen NO difference.
  18. In response to the highlighted part, this IS a requirement for TANF. I think that is the new name for "welfare". In order to receive this, one must attend classes for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week for 3 out of EVERY 4 weeks. You must attend for TWO MONTHS before you get your first check. You have to provide your own transportation (it is not provided for you but thankfully if you live where the bus runs, you can get there). They do not provide child care. I agree 1000% with your statement about fathers needing to be held accountable for their children. Yes, yes and yes!! I also agr
  19. I hate to break this to you, but you can't support yourself, much less a family, on minimum wage. If only one person in the family is working and that is a minimum wage job, the family still most likely qualifies for assistance either in the way of food stamps or Medicaid or both. Minimum wage was NOT set up to be the way you support a family. It was set up to be a springboard to bigger and better.
  20. I'm not close to my family. I have a brother who lives near Orlando and I see him at funerals and on rare occasions when he comes through town heading to Blairsville. I have a sister who lives in Marietta and I haven't seen her in over a year. We talk on the phone and e-mail. Most of my family lives in Cobb County or at least metro Atlanta. I have a nephew in Charlotte and a nephew in Japan. My aunts, uncles and cousins on my mom's side of the family are scattered around the SE. My cousins on my dad's side all live in metro Atlanta. There really is no family for us to travel out of sta
  21. Well, mine is smokin' hot. Barbed Wire's chiropractor is not half bad either. Geez, I hope mine doesn't see that comment about him. And I hope LPPT doesn't see my comment about Barbed Wire's chiropractor. In all seriousness, there are differences in chiropractors. It is difficult to explain and since I don't want to offend anyone, I won't try to explain the differences publicly. I have been to chiropractors since I was 4 years old. I am a definite believer in chiropractic.
  22. It takes a good while to see any benefit. I get a LOT of benefit from it now but I've been doing them for about a year or so. Check out the McKenzie method. They are EXCELLENT physical therapy exercises that anyone can do on their own. I checked a book out of the Cobb County library but I'd be willing to bet that Paulding has it, too. I'll see if I can find the name of it and get back to you. Ah, here it is....7 steps to a pain-free life : how to rapidly relieve back and neck pain using the McKenzie method by Robin McKenzie.
  23. simple exercise that will limber up the neck. Sit straight up in a chair. Bend your head forward as far as comfortable. Count to 10. Return to straight. Bend to right for a count of 10. Back upright. Bend backwards. Count to 10. Return to straight. Bend to left. Count to 10. Back upright. I just about always start out my morning with 2 sets. I think 5-10 sets is recommended. These are standard PT neck exercises.
  24. I like it when someone gets it. I have found that more often than not, you get what you pay for when you hire an employee. Pay minimum wage and you'll likely get a marginal employee. Once they get some experience under their belt, they're our the door to a BETTER job. There is a reason that the good places to work pay well and have no trouble hiring or keeping employees OR growing the business. When we had our business and were trying desperately to find someone to work for us we couldn't find anyone. Everyone who wanted to work for us expected huge bucks but had no clue what
