  1. Actually, CC: It is not as bad as you suggest. The GOP supports a free and appropriate public education, it supports assistance programs etc. The rub is that they are not generous and fail to recognize that even at present levels, the funding usually falls far short of the magnitude of the need. They feel like a parent today being hit up by their teenager for an allowance because of a long-planned date he has with his special girlfriend at six flags. The parent throws out a $5.00 bill and says, don't forget to fill up the car it is on empty. The kid says that won't even pay the
  2. Yet the right asserts that 'corporations' are people but unlike real people, some of whom have courage, I don't think you'll find 'any' coporate 'managers' with anything other than a wide yellow streak up their back. (I can recall Arhtur Ochs Sulzberger or Katherine Graham who owned controlling interests exhibiting courage but can you think of any corporation not run by the founder or founders' family that has any balls at all?) And yet these are the folks that we're counting on to value liberty and freedom. pubby
  3. I was amazed at the wide variety of people - many whom I recognized (but not all). Indeed, it wasn't until I was replaying it that I saw former UN Ambassador and Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young in the crowd. Among others I didn't expect to see was Henry Kissenger, Mike Huckabee but I didn't ever see Bill O'Reilly though ... did I just miss him? pubby
  4. This was a great ending to the 9 years of the Colbert Report. That it shared the same song that ended "Dr. Strangelove" - considered by many the greatest dark-comedy movie of all time - was absolutely fitting. pubby
  5. If all services and products were priced by the market, that might be true. The problem is that in some markets, competition is forced - labor being one (although it is regulated by minimum wages). But the price of many essential things is set, not by the market and it is highly influenced by the granting of 'monopoly' rights, largely because of the gross inefficiency of doing otherwise. In some of those - electric power being one example - the rates are regulated and in others, there is no regulation (ex. CATV, patent drugs, etc.) A key point in regard to the topic at hand is that the
  6. I'm sure you've heard that the North Koreans, under the spell of the short fat guy that inherited his role as the God of the north, were responsible for hacking the chickens at Sony Entertainment who, along with the idiots at the major theater chains, folded when the word was issued they were going to bomb movies houses. I have to give it to Youtube, though, I found this bit of parody of the prick ... actually there are two I'll show you ... The next one is a bit more profane ...some bad words. There are more... and I'm looking to be inspired. pubby

  10. Actually, I have marched ... not alongside MLK ... He was shot when I was still in high school ... but John Lewis, Maynard Jackson, Andrew Young and a few others including Hosea Williams did a March back in the spring of 1988 in downtown Atlanta. I'd never been in a formal civil rights march and I wanted to be so me and my wife went. We were about 10 yards behind the leaders smiling and seeing folks - figured they were FBI - taking pictures. That said, I won't bore you with the multitude of situations similar to this - hell GD we've have dozens in the just this decade - where I made my po
  11. Two things ... the testimony of the officer stated additional shots were fired before the man stopped and turned. Read the narrative ... he was vague on the point but then the DA didn't really cross examine him either. Logic - a trait that you're obviously lacking, states that if there were shots fired while the kid was running away, they missed. Again, if the kid was running and there were no shots fired, why did he stop? You can't. I have no problem at all with the residue on the kids thumb. Why wouldn't there be residue. My reading of the fact is that he was struggling to push the gun
  12. Aw hell, Zorro ... you know better. This is a kind of personal attack of the type I frown on. I think that anyone who reads these columns recognize that you are influenced by right-wing media and frankly, outlets like Faux ... I mean Fox News ... tend to embellish, distort and spin the news in ways that those who are more progressive in their outlet find disturbing. That other media, including the MSM, also report the news to fit with the prevailing narrative is understood and this tendency to emphasize some facts over others to remain consistent is observable. So what? It
  13. Gosh, do we agree! I say that because from my point of view, you're the guy's wife - he's the DA in St. Louis County - and you just said you believed the DA ... I know that my eyes are telling me that the issue is not one that is clear enough to say flatly, that cop did no wrong ... and I don't even know if a real jury trying a criminal complaint would conclude that the cop is guilty beyond a reasonable doubt of shooting that boy down like an animal. So, while I might ultimately concede that Darren Wilson is not guilty of the crime of murder under the law, I would not say - as you

  15. The government owns the airwaves. They regulate the airwaves and the vast majority of political money is spent on those who have government licenses to broadcast on the airwaves. Most congressmen spend between four and six hours a day, every day they are in office, raising money for their next election. Lobbiests, who have special plans - the change in the law to allow large financial institutions to use federally insured deposits in risky investments thus gaining bailout protection - was written directly by Citi Bank. This kind of influence and access is what the legislators tra
  16. This from the NYTimes suggests that this point remains in dispute. That Dorian Johnson recanted his statement in shooting is actually a right wing meme that came out about a week after the shooting and is based on the fact that Michael Brown was not shot in the back. Johnson had stated that he had been shot in the back ... and there is ample evidence to suggest that shots were fired while Brown was running away (although the autopsy showed they missed.) But from reliable press reports - not right wing blogs - Johnson has been consistent in his testimony. That is not to say t

  18. It is not your place to name the leaders of groups that you are not a member. Hands up story remains in sworn testimony of some witnesses ... The DA rejected them and accepted without question others. At least one of the witnesses that the DA accepted as truthful asserted a bull-like reaction where the kid stopped, turned and charged the officer. That testimony has been determined to be likely bogus. Of course the DA emphasized that bit of fiction... and his reliance on it is considered by many to be among the dead fish that stunk up this whole situation and ultimately led to the ex
  19. Yes, that is murderous barbarism. What you're forgetting is that torture is also barbaric ... potentially even more barbaric because the pain associated with murder is relatively quick whereas the purpose of torture is to extend pain over time.At one time we had the perception that we were something other than barbaric people; rather we were an enlightened people.Given the real battle in the international conflict we have named after a tactic - terrorism - is the hearts and minds of the 6+ billion people of the world, by embracing the barbarism of torture we lose the cultural high ground. And

  22. Actually, I invented a device some years back based on this idea called that I called the Finkleman Rocket for some odd reason. The name came from the look of the device ... it was a series of PVC pipes - the PVC toilet base inverted was the bottom with 3" pipe coming up, a 3" to 2" pipe coupler. I drilled holes and put bars through so it looked sort of like a scale. I put some pegs off the lower part probably six-eight inches off the floor. The top bar gave you handholds to maneuver the rocket and also held the toilet paper roll. You would bring it toward you on the toilet and pu
