You begin to wonder what place "liberty and justice for all" ranks on the list of priorities of some. I think "liberty and advantage for me" is much higher on the list of most on the right. pubby

Here We Go Again. No Indictment in Death in New York

NJ: Since you criticized the destructiveness of the protesters over the deaths of unarmed people - even children - by police - a life or death thing BTW - how critical are you of the perpetrators of the Boston Tea Party given that they probably destroyed several tens if not over a $100,000 worth of tea by dumping it into Boston Harbor. And, that was a protest over not a life-or-death issue but instead money and taxes. Keep in mind that both incidents involved the willful destruction of property in protest. By way of exploration, I suspect most of us have been programmed to -
Actually, we were arguing all this going back to the revelations about Abu Grahib and we said that the policy was stupid, didn't work, would put our people in that theater at risk, and worst of all, would so hurt our reputation that it would become the number one recruiting tool of the jihadists. What I didn't quite grasp is that those on the right think the policy is right not because it is effective (it is not) but because it will aid the conservative policy of perpetual war. I believe that to adopt torture as a policy is not only wrong on moral and ethical grounds, but because it is co

Hiram, Georgia – December 15, 2014 – Operation Zero Tolerance began on Dec. 12 and that means increased patrols and high visibility enforcement in Georgia. During this DUI enforcement campaign and every day, if you’re over the limit, you’ll be under arrest. No warnings. No excuses. The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety is launching its annual zero tolerance campaign in conjunction with the national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over initiative to remind all motorists that no matter where they go, impaired driving will not be tolerated. The legal blood alcohol limit is .08 in all 50 states s

And what was particularly egregious is that those few, chanting in another state, ended up having that chant was mixed into an other video for effect. It is called manipulating the news. Fox News deceptively edits Al Sharpton’s anti-violence speech to include chant for ‘dead cops’ Hell, if they'd do that (falsely edit the comments into an unrelated video taken in another city) how certain are we that they wouldn't pay someone to issue the chant in the first place. Things are not always as the seem and we should be very, very skeptical of some of these kinds of 'things.' I know I g -

Guntrucker: I'd have thought you were a man of greater faith. Zorro: I think the record of the committee in putting the documents together and the level of cooperation from the CIA in that endeavor pretty much informed the committee staff that anything they'd get directly from those conducting the torture would be literally untrustworthy garbage. And as we all should know, garbage in, garbage out. I appreciate the committees efforts. Fact is, I would come closer to thinking that the release was because of the absolute bull that the congress passed in the budget bill - I would

It seems a bit high, but the cost of "state and local" corruption is $5,200/yr for a family of four, a study finds that is mentioned in the article below finds. I think that is because when we look at the corruption, we think of actual quid-pro-quo something valuable going directly into the politicians type of illegal corruption. The larger $1,300 per capital figure I'm sure is based on both legal and illegal corruption; the former being literally rampant - you know the offer of cash for a campaign that rents the campaign car that the candidate drives or even campaign cash they spread aro

It may be easier to complain on a message board and given that the attorney representing the county in the action that involved the surepips, stated that one should expect to spend at least a half-million dollars on attorney fees and court costs to even get into court in a conflict with the county, I can say it is much cheaper. Of course the obvious fact is that unless you are one of those hidden people with big money bags who can con the county into paving the streets in your bankrupt subdivision so you can continue to feed your stable of Arabian stallions $80/lb truffles, you probably -

The contention is not that we live under a dictatorship; rather the assertion - and there is a fair amount of evidence to back it up - is that we live in an oligarchy which means that the elected officials are often under the influence of those who have the money, which is the source of power. This means that most of those who run and are elected to office are unduly and inordinately influenced by those who back their candidacies with money. Implicit in the offering of that support is that those with money will have influence. The historical quote of importance in the establishment of t -

It really isn't; rather it is another way to divide and polarize the population and that is how it is used. I'm appalled at both although if you analyze 'air power' in any form - whether it is cruise missiles or the bombing runs of WWII, dropping bombs from the air is and always has been problematic for civilians. I suspect that if you looked close enough, you'd have seen reports of children dying on the ground from stray machine gun fire in the crazy air battles of WWI. The likely reason that drones are currently preferred is because they are relatively silent, they are able to linge

And they were a jury that would have not convicted someone - or even called the crime 'torture' if it was in a time-ticking situation: which is basically how the scenario was pitched. So, while it may be disgusting, the fact that someone might intentionally cause someone pain to extract information from them in a single session ... the notion that this kind of crap was authorized to go on and on, and on for months and years is the perversion and the substantive difference. Think of the sadistic priest in the middle ages who has a Jew on the rack and the Jew breaks and proclaims his bel

And I thought for sure you were going to, instead, encourage us to watch the movie. He said - she said ... then ask, which one of the he-said/she-said folks wants to do what perverted things? You know like waterboard someone, parade them around nekkid, tie them nekkid with a bag over their head, squirt pureed veggies up their ass and deprive them of sleep ... and do some of it every week for a year expecting to get an honest answer to a simple question at the end. You are a pushover for a con, aren't you, mrshoward. pubby

First, I do think that being paid for not working is a good job if you can get it. I may be wrong but I imagine that these certified individuals would be qualified and able to work off-duty jobs involving security even when they are suspended ... and would obviously have a lot more time to do so. Certainly if if they are prohibited from doing those off-duty cop jobs, they could do other jobs off-duty while on suspension at full pay. I would suggest something more along the lines of a suspension that begins with the forced use of vacation days (at full pay)... i.e. they lose their vacatio

I'm appalled about the drone strikes but every forum has rules to stay on topic. Start a topic on the ill advisability of drone strikes and I'll discuss that ... but in the context of this topic, it is a straw man because Obama didn't have a damn thing to do with this. Otherwise, stay on topic. pubby

That's awfully white of you to see it not as a partisan left-right issue ... but if you review the record, I think you'd see many of the right vocally disagree. One Dickens character, the victim of torture, was revolutionary in his development at the time. I speak of Dr. Alexandre Manette. What we deal with here is the age-old understanding of those who embraced the enlightenment and those whose attitudes are based on the traditions of fixed personality that was at the core of traditional conservative thought. To me these understandings of the human condition continue on thro

Let me suggest the reactionary's reaction ... They were obviously Hispanic ... name was Rodriguez ... and he refused to give an ID ... must be an illegal. But what is the likely apparent outcome ... three of the cops were suspended (aka: vacation) with pay. Where is the disincentive ... or is the reaction of being suspended with pay actually an incentive? pubby

Gruber didn't have a thing to do with the release. The CIA breaking in and spying on the Senate Intelligence oversight committee and pissing off the folks that are charged with overseeing their 'covert' actions was the proximate reason for the tit-for-tat on this. Actually, I figure that considering the Iraq war did cost upwards of 5 thousand lives and a trillion or so dollars ... and it was based on a tortured person falsely implicating the Iraqi's in involvement with Al Queda, one might make the argument that lies that came from the torture was actually responsible for the taking thous
