While I can sympathize with those out of work, I think that many times our poor choices in the past come back to haunt us when something unplanned for (like unemployment) hits us. I think if the person has no other sources, and expenses are cut, then an extension could be offered. Cable, cell phones, savings, and the lease on the SUV, etc. would all have to be gone in order to get an extension.
